      Ollie- get yourself into some Pearl Izumi AmFib bibs. Toasty down to 0F without a base thermal layer.
      Winterbike formula: 84-86 Miyata/Univega/Shogun/etc. road frame with full metal fenders, wide drop bar, TRP front caliper w/ KS salmon pads, 3/32” fixed gear, cartridge bearing hubs laced to deep V alloy rims (for slicing through slush), cartridge bb, older Arione saddle, spd pedals, frame pump, full lights. I will not use tubeless in the winter. That’s silly. GP5K’s with tubes are fine. They grab onto ice as well as you’d need them to. Using gears in winter is silly.

      I moulded some "seals" out of beeswax to cover the headset bearings, gaps, and holes, and to plug the seat pillar on an old steel bike I have. It's ugly, but it keeps things out. And probably deters thieves from it looking strange.

    Couple of notes :
    1) *Lightweight over Aero all the way* :
    Pretty much all of the resistance while riding comes from the drag caused by rider. Get into a more aero position, or get clip-on aero bars. Wear tighter clothing and helmets. Simple as that. At the most get some faster tires if you're bothered about resistance even after this.
    Making the bike lightweight makes it fun and lively and , not just easier to climb, whereas making it aero makes it relatively less lively, harder on climbs, painful on crosswinds and overall is much more expensive than losing weight off the bike and rider.
    Besides, everyone except a hardcore , top-line pro should be more worried about being _careful_ on the descents and _fast_ on the climbs. In both scenarios , a lighter bike is better (brakes more easily, climbs better).
    Leave it to the pros to worry about the bike being aero - it is immaterial for everyone else, and maybe even them. At that point of marginal gains, it's probably better to just improve your game.
    2) *Real Winter Tech is Mudguards*
    Pretty much self-explanatory. Ride with full mudguards, and make sure your pedals, tires and handlebars are still grippy when wet. That's more than enough.
    You could wear a light little rain vest if you you were touring or commuting but otherwise its not worth the hassle.
    If you're so allergic to the rains even after full fenders and adequate grip on contact points and tires, then you should just toughen up.

    Despite boatloads of comments decrying the invisibility of a black winter jacket (albeit with a couple light strips that may or may not be working...), Ollie defends the sponsor basically saying it's better to get run over in a stylish black colorway.

  • @LyleKevin
    @LyleKevin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My pet peeve - winter cycling jacket design. With all the cycling jackets I've worn in cold winter weather, I've found that my core overheats, and I get sopping wet on my torso. My arms meanwhile get cold (ditto my legs and, to some extent, my head). I don't notice this much while I'm riding; I feel fine. But I've consistently experienced something puzzling. I return home, still feeling warm, take off my biking kit, and put on warm, dry clothes. At first, everything seems perfect, but fifteen to twenty minutes later, I start feeling cold. Before I know it, I'm shivering and miserably cold.
    I believe that what's happening is that while cycling my core is overheated, explaining why I feel fine then, even though my extremities are cold. When I'm home and no longer exercising, warm blood from my core is circulating through my extremities, warming up the tissues in the extremities while cooling the blood. The cool blood returns to my core, lowering my core temperature and triggering the shivers and discomfort. Make sense?
    I've tried putting on arm warmers under the bike jacket and base layer, but that's awkward and uncomfortable. It seems that the easy solution would be to make winter cycling jackets with a little less insulation at the core, some venting in the back, and a lot more insulation in the arms. I wish manufacturers would catch on.

    The biggest things I've seen evolve over the last 20 years have been lights and brakes. Compared to halogen with NiCd batteries from days of yore the LED lights with lithium batteries are hugely brighter and longer running. Disc brakes are the second huge improvement. Compared to rim brakes in crap conditions, disc is hands down hugely safer.

    Foot placement (ball of foot, midfoot, etc.) depends on terrain. On the flat, ball of the foot is probably better. It you're gutting your way up a steep short hill, midfoot placement gives a little more power and control. That's one reason I like using flat pedals if I'm just out and about on the bike: you can move your feet to suit the circumstances.

    As far as running goes, regarding the ball of the foot, the legs are used more as springs to take advantage of the momentum given by your full bodyweight landing on each leg, rather than just pushing from a fixed body position such as sitting in the saddle. Think of cycling as a sort of alternating single leg press and running as a sort of alternating single leg hops.

I have long mudguards installed on my bike, and obviously I have also brake shades installed, to protect mechanical disc brakes from mud and salty water falling down from mudguards. I don't have winter specific bike. I have "do it all sport universal bike", except I can't do everything with it, because I can't leave it unattended in town. I would be too worried something happens with it. So can't use it to go shopping or anything like that.. but I can go to forest, because.. it's unlikely some deer, or frog would ride away with my bike, or take some parts from it.

    Downtube shift levers, non-indexed are the best.
    I'm sure Di2 are nice but I really think it's overkill for a winter bike. Brake lever shifters with the extra cabling can get wet and start to drag after just a couple of rides and the only way to fix them is with new cables and housing. Even then they won't shift as smoothly as a downtube lever, it's just a simpler system.
    Good downtube levers are very smooth and reliable because there is very little cable housing and no corners to pull the cable around. Unless you need really quick response in a race it's not going to be an advantage to have shifters on the bars so for a winter ride where you are just trying to get out of the house, levers are more than adequate. I am using Dia-compe levers with a Shimano 11 speed crankset and casette. Very smooth and simple to set up, and I can also swap in a Campy Chorus hub and cogset if I want different gears, no issues. Try it, you'll see what I mean.
    I think the solution for winter riding isn't a more complicated setup, it's a simpler one.

    Riding with a forward foot position sounds great, until your toes scrape the ground when pedaling and turning. Motorcyclists should never ride with their heels on the pegs and toes pointing down. You will catch your toe on the ground, your foot will roll under and you could break your foot.

    #askgcntech today I got my first turbo trainer and was wondering, is a specific tire for the turbo really necessary? I prefer riding outside but when the weather is bad I want to jump on the trainer, but without the hassle of changing tires. An extra rear wheel is not a possibility unfortunately, as I am on a tight budget.

    Alex, Don’t change on lightweight vs aero. I get aero should get better efficiency; however, responsiveness is in the lightweight stiff bike. Also speed matters for aero, below certain speeds it does not really matter. Lightweight always matters.
    Also when you standup to power up the hill aero does not matter there but lightweight does.

    Would love a deeper piece on midfoot cleats. My understanding is that the calf does not contribute to propulsion (only to stabilise the foot) so bringing the cleat back reduces unnecessary effort. Would be great to hear more on the science

    I do! And it's got a 105 drive train. Question though... What is the best chain lube for rainy weather? Specific brand choices? I know wet lubes but i'd like to know the specific one you use. Also, what is the best thing to do once you've arrived at work and your is soaking wet?? I'm trying to minimize rust/corrosion by drying the chain as well as I can... But it's never perfect and I don't have the same machinery at work as I do at home to dry the bike...

    Having just moved to the UK from Cape Town, where winter riding is minimal, I’d love to see a video on the details of winter clothing and how to layer up. I find the abundance of different clothing confusing: rain proof, waterproof, wind resistant, soft shell, hard shell 🤯. Isn’t there a jacket that does it all? And of course is aero, because AERO is everything!

    You need to do a bit more research on Mid foot cleat position. It does not increase the amount of force or increase engagement of the calf muscle. The further back the cleat goes the less work the calf has to do to stabilise the ankle. It has many benefits for endurance cycling, very little to no down sides. It is of great benefit to triathletes who can run much better off the bike with fresh calf muscles, and pedal with lower seat and bar position for increased aero.

    You should get a more visible gabba in the GCN shop like a bright red one or something, that would match GCN color and would be safer than black :)

    • @gcntech
      @gcntech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bright colours aren't really any more safe unless they have reflective strips on them - the black gabba jerseys have plenty of reflective material on them and are pretty visible when it's dark. If you'd feel safer in a brighter coloured jersey then go for one for sure, but lights are by far the best option to remain visible out on the road

    • @Bricolo06
      @Bricolo06 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gcntech I agree for when it's completely dark where they don't make any difference, only the reflective part matters. I find them a bit more visible during autumn day light when it's not night yet and car don't always have their light on to make the reflective part shine. Fluo colors are then very visible. Good lights might just be enough though.
