    I've ridden 10's of thousands miles on a tandem and appreciate the difficulty of doing a climb like you did, great job. My cranks are set up out of phase I liked the smoother power transfer to the wheels with less peak stress on the power train. There is more of a learning curve to standing on the pedals together though. You have to be very linear in your pedaling and not rock the bike from side to side. Oh yah the stoker has a lot more control of where the bike goes than you say, if they don't lean into a turn you just might not make it out upright.The fastest I have ever gone on a bike was on my tandem, 65 mph. Passing all those single riders like they were standing still. Great video love the tandem.

    • @samj1185
      @samj1185 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      I've heard it said that the stoker can't steer the tandem but can absolutely put it in the ditch. From the experiences my wife and I have had, that's very true.

      Our tandem is made by DaVinci Designs and has their independent coasting mechanism and a very wide gear range. We have never found climbing to be the challenge people warned us about. I wonder if that combination of features makes the difference? With independent coasting you can change your phase and timing at will.

      @@alasdairmacdonald6730 Looking at my tandem from the right side or drive side the captains pedals are vertical to the ground with the right pedal forward, the stoker is set 90 degrees offset with the right side pedal in the down position horizontal to the ground.

    Great video, Hank looks as though he’s over tandem riding.
    Last week my pilot and I went for a ride into Kangaroo Valley NSW Australia to tick a bucket list ride of mine to climb Barrengarry Mountain on my tandem. It was 563m vertical ascent at an Average gradient of 7.4% max 13%. We managed the round trip of 83km in 3hrs. But not only doing the ride but we beat my 7yo PB I had on my solo bike by a huge 3 mins.

      It's usually the freehub that fails under high loads. I've gone through six on our mountain tandem. Split a Phil Wood hub in half! Unreal torque caused by two riders, incredible rear wheel traction and long wheelbase that keeps the front wheel down. Pawls like to explode!

    • @Rick--A-F
      @Rick--A-F 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dudeonbike800 I've broken a couple of rear axles some years back when I used to pus the big gears. There's a short, but steep hill near where I live, I'll only ride it on my heavy Rohloff / carbon belt drive bike as I can remain seated and it has silly low gears. Even so, I struggle to keep the front wheel on the ground as it keeps lifting as I lean as far forward as I can and keep peddling!

    • @dudeonbike800
      @dudeonbike800 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Rick--A-F You've broken freehub axles? That's impressive. I've broken a lot of axles in the past, but those were under freewheels.
      Only two rear hubs seem virtually imperious to high tandem loads: the Rohloff and Chris King. So, good choice for you! Again, a mountain tandem won't ever lift the front wheel, no matter what the effort. Double the weight over the rear wheel virtually eliminates rear wheel traction loss. We've toasted two hubs on Moab's famous Slickrock trail for obvious reasons: unreal steep climbs on the best traction surface ever!

    A two person bicycle requires a certain level of tacit understanding. If two people step synchronously and cooperate perfectly, it can achieve high-speed cruising. I am the leader of a two person bicycle, yes. My partner is blind, but it's just the darkness of my environment and team. So I left. I am now looking for a team with a good environment to cooperate with. Thank you🎉

    Nice job. Damn, climbing that in a 58/42 on a TANDEM??? Crazy. I'm surprised the freehub survived.

    One reason why tandems can't climb steep hills is that the body english and the arm work required to steady the tandem takes a lot of effort, effort that's normally going towards propelling the bike forwards. Then, there's the psychological aspect. When you stomp on a (single) bike, the whole bike jets forward, especially out of the saddle. The same effort on a tandem, things barely move. And that's dispiriting, because you gotta do it over and over on the tough bits.

    Great video but there is a much better technique for starting and stopping. Captain gets on first, standing over top tube, with legs well apart, and holds tandem upright while stoker gets on, clips in both feet, and sets pedals ready for start. Captain then counts in start and starts same as single bike. Stopping is reverse - captain only puts feet down unless stoker getting off. Captain needs to keep feet far enough apart to keep legs clear of pedals. This means stoker never has trouble clipping in.

    Theoretically, a tandem bike should be more "aero" than 2 separate bikes, so such a set would show a claw on flat terrain. In any case, a fun and informative video, synchronization of cyclists is essential.

    Correct tandem crankset for the rear so you can run the sync chain in the non drive side.
    The a 53/36 on the rear. Then it will scoot up that climb.

    With power to weight, the best scenario would be two people with the same ratio. Anything else will put the pair at a disadvantage. So matched ratios then brings in that the bike is heavier so you are at a small disadvantage.

    I think the easiest way to hook up some one about Cycling could be with a tandem...
    I mean we can get them farther faster talking on the way mechanic on board and on top of it if they get tired we can get them home.
    I which I had one it could show my family that there are other figures shapes than round 😉

    I have owned a tandem for 30 years, I can say that they climb terribly, even with proper gearing. I changed my crank to a triple 2 years ago and now my wife will ride with me again. The crank was a 57x44 when I used to race it.
