$761 in 1940 has the same buying power as $16,531.47 today. A brand new car for $16k really says something about today's incomes for regular people... it's gone to hell.
Agree!
It does, but it also says a lot about what was required of a car then as opposed to now. This was an era where cars were essentially a steel box with wheels. No air bags, catalytic converters, automatic transmission, nothing electronic whatsoever
@@bf3947 Very true. Today’s cars are very sophisticated!
@joeblowe3180 Joined YT a year ago and opining about how white things were "back then" in your other comment? Obvious troll, but I'll reply for the sake of educating others that may read your comment. Refrigerators were a new technology in the 1940s, and new tech always starts out expensive, so that throws your statement out the window. That fridge was also made to last much longer, as many things were back then, because people wouldn't buy them otherwise. My grandparents had their fridge from the 1950s until the early 2000s, and they only replaced it because of energy efficiency. It wasn't even broken. So, our buying power has decreased, and on top of that, we have also allowed the products to become physically worse because consumerism and capitalism demand we buy things more often.
@@nerium.nerium Really? The reliability of cars back then was questionable at best. My point still stands. A modern car is worth the extra money because it is MUCH safer, and MUCH more reliable. Why is it the negative comments always get voted up the most?
Jeannie’s commentary is the best. 18:09
the article: “why murder fascinates me!”
Jeannie: “mkay,”
😁
it is fascinating tho (but i’m a psychologist specialising in personality disorders lmao)
this may sound sappy but i’m 17 years old and i have been watching ASMR for years and no one compares to you! i had a very bad day today and this video immediately lifted my spirits and comforted me. i have sleeping issues and your videos always put me at ease and help me fall asleep so quickly. every night im so excited to watch one of your videos. i cannot thank you enough, you deserve the world!
That is awesome! I'm so glad these help, luv! Thank you for letting me know.
Hello my fellow 17 yr old
Hello fellow seventeen year olds
I feel the same way!! These make me so happy
Jeannie, you look like a movie star!!!
Right? She’s so radiant and beautiful
The poem written for a mother who lost her child really got me straight in the heart I lost my son who was 2 and a half in 2016.
Oh my…I’m so sorry, friend. I also know this pain and I share your grief. Please know I send the tenderest of hugs your way.
I'm sorry for your loss ❤
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Oh. That's sad.
I am so sorry for your loss. Sending you all the best. 🙏❤
THAT MAYONNAISE WITH APPLES🤣🤣🤣 I'm with you!
The use of jello in the 40s is super interesting! As best as I understand it, jello used to be (thinking 1890s era) a sign of status and wealth, because it wasn’t produced in high quantities and thus unavailable to the lower classes. However, come the 20s, 30s and 40s, Jello became widely available and much, much cheaper. Once lower classes got their hands on it, the wealthy pretty much ditched it as a status symbol, but lower classes still prided themselves on finally being able to afford and enjoy it. So recipes using jello became super widespread in a sort of trend. Presumably they were all just thrilled that it was translucent and looked cool rather than really enjoying its taste, lol. Anyone’s free to correct me if I have this incorrect, but this is what I remember learning awhile back.
Wow - awesome response! Thank you for this! I never thought of the economic reasons behind it.
I own a chatelaine cookbook from the 1960s, they loved gelatin even then. I see it as a carryover from eastern europeans such as the Polish and Ukrainians who loved Gelatin making it widespread. The texture could also be a part of it as well, meat jelly and vegetable jelly is an interesting concept.
@@1millionangels yeah normal food in Eastern European countries till today pretty much😃😊
You're correct! Gelatin was used as early as the Middle Ages. It could easily take more than half a day and it took a lot of servants to make. In the 1890s granulated gelatin was invented and that allowed for the modern products we know and love today. ♥

I have a pretty stressful job as a mental health direct support for teenage girls & i listen to your videos after hard days at work or before work to calm myself & decompress.
the wisdom you share with us in your videos warms my heart & brings comfort & perspective when life gets hectic
thank you for what you do 💓
Thank you for what you do. That is such an important job. And yes, you need to take care of YOU! ♥️💗♥️
That's exactly what I wrote in my comment! It's incredibile to see how good a person can do to more than one person thanks to a platform, Little pieces of wisdom that everybody can benefit from. cheers!
@@MadameV1993 I truly applaud YOU! But thank you!! We’ll both keep at it! 🥰
Maybe this is slightly weird to say, but you remind me so much of my Grandmother, who passed away in 2012. Your presence is exactly like she was. It's so comforting to find an ASMRtist who has her looks/personality.
Aw, Sarah. This is so sweet. Big hugs to you.
As a teenager with a weird fascination with 1930s - 50’s fashion and animation, I clicked ✨
Edit: Not only did I enjoy the content, but this helped soothe my cramps ☺️
Also wow, 25 cents is almost 6 dollars now!
Glad you enjoyed it! 💖😑💖
Born in the 80s but so nostalgic for this time and the paper media experience. Thank you for the peace and comfort you bring so many. Sharing your talents with us is a blessing.
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
You’re so genuinely interested in the content it’s like reading with a friend, so comforting and relaxing!
@christinab3963 I completely agree with you!
I enjoy in how Jeannie relates to so much of what is presented in a her sharings of light stories of nostalgia from when she was younger.
These magazine flip throughs are my favorite. I wasn’t born until “94 so your perspective and the snapshot of the times is so interesting to see and learn from! P.S. Your hair is looking especially “Diana” today ❤️
Thank you, Chris!
Seems like 1940s magazines relied a lot more on art than photos for imagery 👀 I quite like it
Much cheaper at the time than taking a photo ☺️ which the opposite is probably true now
You are one of the most beautiful and well spoken people I have ever seen! Thank you so much for this amazing video ❤️❤️
Wow, thank you!
Jeannie you are ✨GLOWING ✨
I decided to go back to school I'm almost 60 and I am working on my homework while listening to your ASMR. It helps to keep me focused as your keeping me company. FYI, I love Foyles War and have re-watched it a few times.
Good for you, Norma! That’s awesome. You have my admiration!
That's so cool!
Aww, Congrats! You so got this 💖💖
In bed, comfy, ready for bed, dozing off.. but don’t want to fall asleep because your voice is so soothing. Will be my new fav vid, til the next one! 💗
Good night, Rubita! Sleep well, luv!
The quality of this magazine is so much higher than I would have expected from a magazine in 1940! Very good design and layout etc. thanks for giving us a tour, it’s a great insight into life at that time 🙂
I totally agree! Thank you!!
As an English learner, I would say your speaking is awesome.
That’s so kind! Thank you!
Brilliant point! I'm going to pass this along to some folks I work with (I'm an interpreter irl)- talk about a relaxing way to learn English!
There were so many stories to read in magazines because there was no TV in 1940! You read or gathered around the radio to listen to it!
I love her so much she has the best voice. I loved watching her video with her husband aka Captain Zane! He has a really good voice as well and I would love to see him on more videos. Jeannie as such a good personality and is so sweet. Have a great day Jeannie cannot wait to see this incredible women hit 100K!
Thank you, Levon! This is really nice!
I wish I could go back to the 40s to do my shopping! 😄
You tube is doing that! They'd unsubscribe actual real subscribers from channels that are doing well! It's ridiculous! They'd also remove monetization from certain channels that are doing great and claim their videos lost monetization due to insufficient traffic(total lies btw!) Anyway, thank you kindly for all you do Jeannie! You rock!❤
Thank you for that! It’s all mind-boggling to me! That algorithm is the world’s most mysterious thing!
I’m glad you’re here!
@@JeannieBASMR TikTok does something similar, it's really sad. Your content is wonderful and so well thought out that I greatly appreciate it, and subscribed as a result! YT might pay the best as far as social media goes, but they're abusing creators with their tactics. 🤨
Ps I’m still subscribed bc you flashed up on my phone. Currently have insomnia so maybe this will get me to sleep. Thank you xx

I honestly don't know how I stumbled across your channel.....but it's a lot of fun. Keep it up. Loving all these old magazines that we used to savor. Making them last. LOL!
Isn’t it weird how we discover content?? Lol! Well, I’m glad you’re here! Welcome!
Hi Jeanie, Michele posting with some sad news. We had to put down our sweet little dog, Princess Zora (who would've turned 16 next week) :-( Then the next morning, I think she came back to haunt me when I was starting to wash her belongings before donating them. I somehow missed a few last steps of our basement stairs and fell hurting my ankle. Come to find out, it's broken. I missed hearing your calming voice this week. I LOVE the old magazines so much better than the ones of today with their many interesting stories instead of trashy tabloids. Things back then seem so simple compared to today.
I'm so sorry about your little Princess Zora! Losing a beloved pet is soooo hard! Big hugs to you - and get well soon, luv!
I actually thought the food looked great. In fact I was admiring how ripe and tasty the fruits looked, nothing like they are today. And the reason they look “ugly” in those magazines is because they used REAL food. The magazines today and in the commercials usually use fake food, colourised and painted to look “good”. YUCK. 🌸
you are such a classy lady, definitely an inspiration 💖
Thank you so much!!
When I was a kid I would eat Ritz crackers as a late night snack with my grandpa. Some of these products definitely bring back some nostalgia, even if I’m only 28
That a great memory with your grandpa!
Love this! I love old magazines. My mom was born in '39 so hearing what she and my grandmother were experiencing in the 40s is a treat.
That’s awesome!! Thank you for sharing this!!
You look so classy and like a movie star! Love it
Gosh - thanks!!
I'm a new subscriber of your channel and I must say that you radiate so much positivity and peace. And it's not just about your calm voice or beautiful physical appearance. It's about the aura that you manage to create around yourself.

I grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada...located on the US border opposite the city of Niagara Falls, New York. My Grandad smoked camel non-filters for 70 years. All us kids heard the stories of Gramps stuffing our baby seats and snow suits with extra cartons of smuggled in American smokes...for the trip across the Niagara River back to Canada.

It's really interesting that you point out how the '80s borrowed from the '40s the puffy sleeves because as soon as I saw the drawings I thought, "Wow, that silhouette looks a lot like the 1890s sleeves"! It's funny how we're able to re-imagine styles even without being conscious of it!
Good point!
@@JeannieBASMR Oh also--based off of gov't statistics for past v. current inflation rate 1 USD in 1940= $21.72 today. So that means that for the Chevy that was 659 USD that would equate to $14, 315.69. I'm curious about the purchasing power though and what the average American's income and loan options were like to get a better sense of the feasibility of that price but as the hard numbers stand that's an incredible difference!

I agree...it's so wonderful to have a place or person to turn to who helps just calm things down a bit. Life is chaotic...some days more than others. xo
theres something about the old eras kinda feel so sentimental so warm and comforting to me right now...with all the craziness happening now, i kinda miss the simple life back in 90s, 80s 70s 60s...its prime eras i wud say, i know theres not much going on way back when, but somehow i kinda missed it, the simple thing, even tho so limited option, but things were simple, more meaningful...compared nowadays, where we have so much, so many options, but feels empty.
I totally understand! 😉
