This 65 min hatha yoga class is all about your nervous system. By focusing entirely on your spine we will calm your nerves. In this hatha yoga class we focus on your brain, your spinal chord, your central nervous system, your peripheral nervous system, your autonomic nervous system which includes your sympathetic nervous system and your parasympathetic nervous system, your cranial nerves, your spinal nerves, sensory and motor divisions, and your somatic nervous system. Your nervous system is a complex system!
All of this to say, we will focus on your spine. We will begin reclined and release your spine in half moon pose and then reclined twist. When we come to kneeling we will do some cat pose followed by the spinal energy series. Before we come to standing we will do gate pose. In standing we will do a side bend, a backbend and then side angle pose. Cobra is our backbend followed by sages twist and tortoise pose. We will finish our class with two mudras, the gyan mudra and the hakini mudra.
Your central nervous system includes your brain and your spinal chord. There are many nerves that connect your brain and body parts and organs through your spinal chords. Your nerves exit your sine between your vertebral foramina. If your spinal column is compressed, out of alignment or your discs have wear and tear, then your nerves become impinged which cuts off the flow of energy to your muscles and organs. By maintaining the suppleness of your spine through yoga you are greatly assisting your central nervous system.
Your spinal cavity contains the spinal cord, while the head contains the brain. Your central nervous system is enclosed and protected by meninges, a three-layered system of membranes, including a tough, leathery outer layer called the dura mater. Your brain is also protected by your skull, while your spinal cord is protected by your vertebrae.
Your peripheral nervous system (PNS) includes the parts of your nervous system structures that do not lie within your central nervous system. A large majority of your axon bundles called nerves are considered to belong to the peripheral nervous system, even when the cell bodies of the neurons to which they belong reside within the brain or spinal cord. The PNS is divided into somatic and visceral parts. The somatic part consists of the nerves that innervate the skin, joints, and muscles. The cell bodies of somatic sensory neurons lie in dorsal root ganglia of the spinal cord. The visceral part, also known as the autonomic nervous system, contains neurons that innervate the internal organs, blood vessels, and glands. The autonomic nervous system itself consists of two parts: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system, which we talked about at great length in episode 192. www.melissawest...
As I mentioned, your central nervous system includes your brain and your spinal chord and this acts as the integrative and control center. Next comes the peripheral nervous system which includes your cranial nerves and spinal nerves. They act as the communication lines between your central nervous system and the rest of your body. As I mentioned, your peripheral nervous system breaks down into your somatic and visceral parts or the sensory and motor divisions. The sensory division affects somatic and visceral nerve fibers which conduct nerve impulses to the central nervous system. The motor division affects motor nerve fibers which conducts impulses from your central nervous system to your muscles and glands. Your motor division then affects your autonomic nervous system and your somatic nervous system. Your autonomic nervous system is involuntary and affects functions below your level of consciousness such as your heart rate, digestion, respiration rate, salivation, perspiration, pupil dilation, and need to urinate for example. Your somatic nervous system affects nerve impulses to your musculoskeletal system. Your sympathetic nervous system mobilizes your body during fight or flight and your parasympathetic nervous system conserves energy and promotes "house-keeping" such as healing and digestion in your body while at rest.

This episode was amazing! I love all of your videos, each one has something valuable to offer. This one was perfect me today. I have been overwrought and over stimulated all week, bombarded with noises and people (I'm an HSP). It had gotten so bad I was starting to feel physically sick. When I woke up this morning to do yoga with you, I was really excited to work on my nervous system. I knew it needed it! And I feel amazing! Thank Melissa for all of your hard work and dedication to this program and your students/friends. Each yoga class feels like a mini vacation to me, it sets me up for my day perfectly. Namaste.

Just wanted to begin by saying thank you! I think this video was personally much needed. I know I'm a bit behind on your videos, being I'm still in the benefits of yoga series, but I'm personally really enjoying it. all the knowledge and wisdome that you share is so fantasic. I do agree with your spine being a direct reflection of your age. I personally find that when my spine it supple and relaxed I think much more clearly and I am able to focus on things with ease, as apposed to when it feels tight and compressed. This video was so inspiring to remind myself to take the act of being supple off my mat and into the outside world. So often I find myself (lately) gritting my teeth or shrugging my shoulders, and when it;s like that I can get irritated very easily, (I workout everyday and conisistantly push my body to do more, so my muscles can get very tense) but after my namaste yoga sessions with you every evening I can feel the effects of yoga healing my muscles and relaxing my jaw, (huge plus) I also find I don't get irritated very easily, when maybe even last week i would. So I just wanted to say thank you! & just know you're helping a 22 year old in one state away live a better, less stressed life. I'm greatful, blessings to you :)
    Namaste, Kahley Mae

      Dear Kahley
You are so welcome. There is no behind in yoga, so you are not behind. I'm so glad you are enjoying the classes. It is amazing how much our spine reflects our well-being. I love that you are able to take the act of being supple off your mat and into the world. Tim (my husband) and I are just talking about how amazing it is how much times have changed and how much we would have liked to have had access to our teachings in our 20s! ;) I'm so proud of you and I'm honoured that our videos are able to reach you. Namaste, Melissa
