A detail I really like about the Zach twist is that despite us seeing York the whole game he always looked like Zach to everyone in the world, and this is hinted at with many people mentioning York's "scar" which Zach has far more prominently than York's model.
I love how at first York being overly easy going is just a product of the Twin Peaks influence but is actively explained as a coping mechanism after the twist. Everything about the finale was genuinely powerful and incredibly moving
20:50 Early on when this game was first going viral I speculated that "Zack" was what York called the player and he was breaking the forth wall. That wasn't it, but I still like the idea.
I really appreciate these long stretch videos. In a world of Internet (and toxic) distractions, this in my opinion is a healthy one and brings innocent child hood nostalga. I also appreciate the in-depth research and time you put in. 🎉❤
This has quickly become one of the most dependable and entertaining channels on YT. You make videos that feel catered to my personal interests, so I thank you for all of your excellent work.
I have a deep love and affection for Deadly Premonition and in the past few years there's been like several dozen video essays on it and I haven't watched any of 'em because I have such a personal relationship with and appreciation for the game, but the moment I saw this video I clicked on it immediately. You did not let me down. I knew I could count on you, my favorite son.
I feel like I say this every few months but it's been so cool to watch you come into your own as a reviewer, an orator, and an editorialist. Keep it up, son. You're going places.
I know most youtubers hate this but the best lp of all time for this game is supergreatfriend. He's the best youtuber that sadly underrated. I love these deep dive videos but it's also wonderful seeing someone make a full 10000 percent playthrough of a game they know and love. This video was awesome! Just leaving this for some that may want a full lp experience :)
I wanted to make a similar comment; he put so much effort in his playthrough. He talks about some of the movies Zach talks about, cuts out tedious combat and shows off alternative endings and all side quests. He got the patience of a saint.
I never played this game at the time. I follow several content creators who do game retrospective and I've seen a couple of recent videos on this same game. It's really interesting seeing how different people tackle the same game
Yes the smoking..I have the 360 version, it has all the cut scenes with the grand daughter, but no dlc or special health bar so I've often wondered if that was normal for this version or well what...I've never had any problems with glitching or what have you and when using my disc on Xbox one it seems smoother but slightly more washed out. Maybe that's me, however it transfered everything without problems and I really prefer this version. I recommend getting the wrench right away and wall crawling shadows drop in 4 to 5 hits running and stop/180 to each end of the hall. She stays on the ceiling wait and shoot her down, run/b evade, when she jumps to the side, wait and smack her with the wrench. Your machine gun and wrench or bar should be one toggle up or down. If you got the guitar it's one hit, Good luck!
Another proud father dropping in to say this another banger video, Son. Also cracking up at how York is covered in flies for practically your entire playthrough 😂
I played about 2/3 of this game a decade ago and loved its vibe. Would love to experience it through to the end, but just don't get the time to game anymore. So glad I can watch playthroughs and documentaries of it on TH-cam, though!
Thank you for talking about this game! The first time I finished it, it immediately became my favorite game and I recommend it to _everyone._ I've even bought it for several people bc it's usually dirt cheap, lol You've made me proud, son.
It's funny - seeing your summary this seems like an amazing game, but back when I played it I was mostly just annoyed. The ending twists were cool, but I hated the whole gameplay (not just the fighting, it seemed in general like the game doesn't respect the player's time), didn't get into the humor and atmosphere, and found the delivery of most story parts lackluster. In general though, I just don't seem to get what the Twin Peaks magic is. Every time a work is compared to it, I end up not liking it, even if the general direction sounds like it would appeal to me. Great love letter!
Son, it happened again. Some of the first few videos you made on this channel, I commented about how I had just finished playing the games you were showcasing the day before you uploaded the videos of each, the silent hill games in particular I remember. It just happened again. I completed my 5th or 6th playthrough of DP just 2 nights ago.
If you removed the shooting of the alternative world monsters and had it based totally in the real world with no monsters it reminds me of the game Heavy Rain - I think it was called that.
so I made it 2/3 through the game before stranding in the middle of nowhere an giving up. really enjoyed my time till then though. the game truly is something special.
An interesting choice of game for a retrospective, Son. I don't think I've ever watched an analyses of Deadly Premonition, so I suppose it was a wise choice too!
I have never played Deadly Premonition but there is a legendary series of videos from Giant Bomb called the Deadly Premonition Endurance Run. If you have zero desire to actually play the game you could watch this series and be very entertained
It's fascinating to just watch Thomas in every scene. Whoever animated him cared. Thomas has some reactions during scenes he doesn't even talk in that are really funny or touching or odd. He feels like a real person* [SPOILERS] *up til the finale.
Hope you read comments on older videos. More retrospectives for horror games from PS2 man I loved the silent hill retrospective I watched that long video of all the videos put together it was great
I bought deadly premonition a few years ago, was curious about it and looking for something new to play. I played about half the game, enjoying it even with its weird issues or design, and then some other game i had been waiting for came out (can't remember what game specifically, maybe Doom Eternal) and i didn't play Deadly Premonition for a year or two, eventually starting it back up last year. I was so glad i did, i was not expecting HALF of the crazy shit i ended up getting into with York, and the final few hours of the game were filled with so many twists and crazy moments that it burned a place into my memory permanently. I'm halfway through playing the prequel now, which i don't like nearly as much as the first game but still find enjoyment in it. I might reinstall the first one now and play through again after watching this video lol
Son I gotta give it to you. Seeing your interest in the X Files has made me even more proud today! Later tonight I will be proposing to my gf so wish me luck!
I have the PS3 director's cut version...and...loll Love this game! When it came out...pratically nobody talked about it! You can use to the move controllers with the Director's cut! What a game!
"Deadly Premonition is a game that by all accounts should work" Until you try to play it that is! Then you're greeted by numerous crashes and game breaking bugs hahaha
The more the merrier tho! I love TPTV too, but it's cool to watch different people take on the same subject. It's always interesting to see how they respond, what they focus on, what they ignore, what messages or themes they draw from the games... As for TPTV I hope 2024 is the year Canal Studios steps off his d-ck & FINALLY lets him post the Jacob's Ladder video he made a couple years ago as a companion piece to his Silent Hill 2 video. I desperately want to see that, for all of his audience & also for him; he says he's so proud of it & doesn't care if it's monetized, he just wants us top see it. Anyways, I'll always watch Son + TPTV. Love 'em both. Will also watch almost anything on Deadly Premonition, too, bc I always learn something new. Not trying to bag on you; just sharing my enthusiasm. I wish you well Happy Year of the Dragon & I hope you find new adventures!
GTA of Terror, IDK this will work, but big surprise FR, you think you are so safe explore, but once you enter in a place, like the museum, D@MN, this game is really spooky. And the plot twist at the end, never want that destiny for that character, but this is a terror game. The most scary part, the crashes, lol, the director of this game is a genius, almost at the level of Team Silent. If this game will get a remake in the new gen consoles, will be a big rival for Silent Hill, and Resident evil FS.
Thank you again for the long retrospective about Deadly Premonition. Despite its flaws and awkward presentation you'll find yourself drawn in by its charm. It also got me to watch Twin Peaks, which I would also highly recommend. Just watch the series and say to yourself "This was on NATIONAL TV" it was so fascinating and creative. Its also known that David Lynch, the show's creator was more or less forced to name Laura Palmer's killer and the show went on to another season without him, which in itself is a fascinating watch. He does return near the end to right the course, but stick it out and follow it up with the recent series that came out as well!
The thing is, the game is ridiculous, but at the same time, it seems to have been made with love. And the story is great. I really didn't expect it when I played the game.
Given they didnt overhaul the combat they were probably right to set the difficulty in Directors Cut close to the 'Easy' mode of the original. The only noticeable difference when you raise the difficulty in the original is in how long the combat sections take to complete - it just makes the combat sections even more of a slog, not really any more challenging. I do agree that they missed a trick in not making the combat more challenging though. DC was an opportunity to overhaul the enemy AI to make the combat more fun - they improved the controls, but most of the other changes were broadly unpopular (including the additional cutscenes).
I would actually pay full price for a definitive edition on PS5 with all the bug fixes it needs. I've never been so interested in an older game that I've never played.
Nope I played it alright, finished it twice and love it great game ( in spite of its flaws, partly because of them.) And I have watched about 10 or 11 TH-cam videos on this game. If any of you youtubers haven't played it I recommend you do. There is a good reason this game has so many videos on it. It's a 9/10 for me plus I'm apparently in the minority because I love the second game ( flaws and all!) I'd give it 8.7/10. Isn't that right my little fairy!! Oh you agree too Zach .
by the way, I thought the Return had glimpses of being good, but overall was bad. I hated having Dougie for most of the season and thought the ending was shitty. Lynch is old, we won't have a season 4 ever, and went off the reservation too much for me with it. He was better when reigned in during the first two seasons IMO.
Are you planning on a Like A Dragon Gaiden retrospective boss? I was hoping for one before Infinite Wealth, because I have no idea what this secret agent Kiryu stuff is all about. XD
There cannot be too long talking about Deadly Premonition. It's just...Something new. It's a soup made of disparate parts that tastes Michellin starred.
Son, this was excellent, as usual, & you know I'm always proud of you, no matter what. But I can't help but notice that you left York a Stinky Detective for longer than necessary. That's not like the Son I know. Come shoot some hoops & get a Gingerale Float with your Old Man, we'll talk hygiene.
Dude... The volume in this is all over the place. I had to max my usual sound settings o.O Edit: Just to get blasted a minute later by ingame dialogue.
Anyone else never played Deadly Premonition but watched like 50 documentaries about it lmao
✋
I watch so many I see FK in the coffee every where.
Me, I’m so fascinated lol
I played it for a few minutes and immediately returned it. 😂
FK. In the coffee

Did you see that, Zach? Clear as a crisp spring morning!
"Deadly Premonition" in my youtube recommended! I knew I could count on it, never fails.
Thanks for the shout out to my Deadly Premonition fan site :) I'm glad you found in useful in your research! 😊
Yes, thank you my favorite son, this was what I was waiting for a long time now.
Hope you enjoy the video!

Oh my, YES! I love you my son. One of my favorite oddities of a game and my favorite son talking about it. Excited to watch it.
Hope you enjoy the video!

This is one of my favorite games of all time, thanks for this video.
Francis York Morgan is an amazing FBI Special Agent.
Played this game as a kid, and was absolutely baffled by it 😭. I think this game started my love for games such as it, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill
I highly recommend watching Two Best Friends Play Deadly Premonition on TH-cam. It's absolutely hilarious, especially the bugs. Miss those guys.
Always great seeing a TBFP fan out in the wild
@@TAMAMO-VIRUS Likewise! Few good memories these days like those 4 legends. They created some incredible content.

What timing. Just finished the game this morning. Glad people are still talking about this gem.

Fun fact, that's Jason Momoa in the gif.
I recently watched twin peaks and it made me appreciate this game so much more
You need to a video series on Metal Gear Solid. Would love to see your insight and playthrough!
Coming soon
My god, the flies in the town hall scenes... 💀

DP is closest we will ever get to a proper Twin Peaks adaptation in video game format ever.
Just the ray of sonshine I needed when I'm dealing with this goddamn cold. Glad to see you doing weird stuff again son.
"sonshine" oh adorable!
I played DP, then consumed all the media it referenced, it didn't lessen my experince of the game, and I recall enjoing it quite well. Cheers!
