It shows the intimidation factor so well. He doesn't have to yell, threaten, or act violent. He walks in and just takes their food.
When he does do the first violent thing, shooting the guy on the couch, it's so random. It reinforces the idea that the other guys in the apartment truly have no power.

Sociopaths generally like to have some sort of leadup/ buildup to a kill or beginning of a torture period. It's designed to evaporate the Victim's Hope and elevate the Perpetrator's feeling of Power. Vincent has probably worked long enough with Jules to know what happens after the Bible is brought up.

It's psychological intimidation. To set the mood. To get them all nervous and anxious. Overthinking and let fear take over. Then take it to the next level. Make them feel like they're about to die than actually make that fear of death become reality. It's screwed up but it makes this movie epic.

I remember when this came out and all the wild theories about what was in the case. My favorite was that it was Marcellus Wallace's soul or someone else's soul that was sold to the devil. The bandage on the back of the neck of Marcellus was supposedly there to cover up the spot where your soul is removed. Crazy! The suitcase was just your typical McGuffin to keep the story moving.
