I have a few big mana decks but I've taken doubling cube out of them. It's basically a win more card. The decks that have cabal coffers in I've just put in an untapper like deserted temple, it's usually more effective and less likely to get 'fear removed' in the early game.
I just built a discard deck 2 months ago and came across Syphon Mind. I specifically built this deck with older forgotten cards like this and Undertaker, Stitch Together, Megrim, and Necrogen Mists. Old janky forgotten cards are my favorite to build with.
I started playing in 2010 but I didn't think commander was fun until like 2019 or something and I saw my son playing Hell's Caretaker and that thing put in overtime, I was like that's such a good card.
I have Dragon Broodmother in three of my decks. Miirym (dragon tribal), Ziatora (token sacs) and Shalai & Hallar (counters/tokens). It's really strong and almost immediately starts paying off. Kinda similarly and one I don't really see anymore is Luminarch Ascension. I mean I still use it, but I don't see it in anyone else's decks. 😂
Man, this was nostalgic. I opened a brothers war pack recently and found a quick silver amulet and got to thinking about this. I remember getting solemn Simulacrum and thinking power creep had gone too far. 😊
I for sure still run Siphon Mind and Dust Bowl in a variety of decks. I agree that dust bowl is a lot of mana but it is an easy way to get some extra "spell" slots into a mono colored deck. Also had a really good chuckle over a few of those like Journeyer Kite which I totally had in a bunch of decks circa 2010/2011 but probably haven't even thought of it in years. I think part of why a few of these generically good cards don't get played is just that a lot more commander centered cards have been printed in the past several years so there is a lot less room for including something just because it is "good" and in-color.
I play dragon broodmother in my dragon deck, and its really wonderful. High casting cost is pretty justified, as you get value almost immediately out of it. The deck does hang around making dragon tokens, maybe thats the synergy you need for this one.
kinda miss the time when commander was about playing niche cards that could work in the format instead of wizards pumping out commander staples in every single set. Drains the format of its personnality and the fun of seeing weird decks from out of left field but still working because the player thought about it.
Syphon mind is dope for mono black or discard themes. I use doubling cube in my urza high artificer artifact deck. I also use doubling cube in my mono black demon tribal deck. Still a great card, get your cabal coffers off then double it with the cube yes please 😊
Hey, I have twilight prophet and divinity of pride in the same deck I was bummed twilight prophet cost so much for so long because I love seb mckinnon so I really wanted to collect it for the art
It’s funny you mention stronghold assassin! I just recently took it out of my mono black deck. It’s such an incredible card but it feels bad to play in a lot of situations that you mentioned. If there’s only 1 nonblack player, it feels bad to keep targeting them with it lol
The thing about these cards is they are still extremely effective in Commander. They simply aren’t cards that make all your opponents groan and hate you like Rhystic Study still does. You’ll still win games with them and your opponents might even fist bump you for going retro
I play it in a Burakos party deck where the treasures help you getting the city's blessing online pretty fast. So far the value from this card was always highly appreciated.
Before ramping was op in commander. 2-3 mana cards couldn't finish a game so a bunch of old cards relied on having lands in hand to ramp out into things that could end the game.
I remember clones being in nearly every blue deck I played against before the rules change. They were really common where I played as an effective way to remove a commander.
I really like Stronghold Assassin in my Kels, Fight Fixer deck. Even if I don’t hit an impactful creature it’s a sac outlet and I get to draw cards with Kels
Rune-Scarred Demon and THE CUBE are great in my mono black big mana deck, helmed by Gonti; Hoarding Broodlord is great redundancy for RSD, but nothing does what THE CUBE does. Gotta look out for my old copies of Siphon Mind and have it replace the instances of Ancient Craving (et al) because its basically the same thing, only it disrupts the opponent and doesn't lose life!
I forgot about divinity, will have to add it somewhere - probably Teysa. Dragon broodmother in Atla is nice. Stronghold assassin also taps - so one sac a turn - but it's good in any Zombie deck - in my Varina deck. I was just looking at syphon mind and thinking yeah, this needs to go somewhere. I don't like any draw less than 3 personally.
We have a guy in our pod who seems to be stuck in the meta of 10 years ago, a lot of these he genuinely runs in his decks 😂 Annoyingly I do like the idea of the stronghold assassin for my nemata deck though...
I only started Magic, specificqlly Commander only, right before Kaldheim came out. I made an Obeka, Brute Chronologist deck and still play Slave of Bolas in it
I still run Twilight Prophet & Divinity of Pride in Karlov, and they're both powerhouses. Slave of Bolas is one I completely forgot about, though - gonna have to slot that into Missy. 😀
It's funny, I've never seen Slave of Bolas, but I find excuses to play Spinal Embrace already. This actually isn't a bad list, bet I could use some of these.
I think the real thing with these cards is that it requires games to go on longer than they do nowadays. Nowadays we can get about 5-6 commander games after a day of work, whereas back when I first got started in commander in 2013 games would go on forever. we would be lucky to finish a single game before we would have to pack up and go home. There used to be more interaction between players, now even casual games are more like 4 player solitaire. I prefer longer slugfests, but to get those now I have to play low-power games, which is fine.
I dont play magic that much like before but i think the reason is also printing of new cards so players try to use new cards is too much new cards printing today thats my opinion, nice video , is too much cards today in all formats so people prefer new cards .
I feel like alot of generic good cards have stopped seeing as kuch plau over time as decks have been gotten more tools and be able to be more and more focused on a spefic strategy and had less slots to fill. Which is probably why alot of these cards see less play now.
Syphon mind still a staple imo. The others sure, they've moved to niche choices for synergy decks. Or decks that are specifically trying to be less powerful.
Probably most of these cards not seeing so much play in this days because edhrec. The new players uses cards recomended by that database and dont search its own cards thats because some gems are still hide on the old editions.
So a 8/8 flyer for 5 finishes the game and is sooo good but a 6/6 Flyer that tutors anything for 7 is ok? Doesn't make sense... The 6/6 flyer that tutor is just gonna end soooo many more games..
Twilight prophet was like $40 for a long time so that’s probably why it wasn’t seeing play, people probably forgot about it because of the price
I have a few big mana decks but I've taken doubling cube out of them. It's basically a win more card. The decks that have cabal coffers in I've just put in an untapper like deserted temple, it's usually more effective and less likely to get 'fear removed' in the early game.
This is such a great idea for an episode! I just found you recently and have been loving your stuff! Keep up the great work!
I just built a discard deck 2 months ago and came across Syphon Mind. I specifically built this deck with older forgotten cards like this and Undertaker, Stitch Together, Megrim, and Necrogen Mists. Old janky forgotten cards are my favorite to build with.
I still play syphon mind a lot
Love that card, it’s in all my black decks.
A 6 for 1 is pretty nice
I use Siphon Mind in my Anhelo Deck, everyone discard 2 + Draw 6 is fun for 4 Mana
Talking about staples, and Divinity of Pride is illustrated by Greg Staples.😂
I started playing in 2010 but I didn't think commander was fun until like 2019 or something and I saw my son playing Hell's Caretaker and that thing put in overtime, I was like that's such a good card.
I only play from cards pre-2015. So many of these are still staples for me!
I still use slave of bolas in my bolas themed deck and tbh I haven't had a situation where I've been unhappy to have it
Man, this was nostalgic. I opened a brothers war pack recently and found a quick silver amulet and got to thinking about this. I remember getting solemn Simulacrum and thinking power creep had gone too far. 😊
The format is also suffering from mental rotation, people forget these cards exists due to the continous set release.
Hoarding Broodlord is pretty similar to Rune-Scarred Demon and sees a decent amount of play. Much better imo and combo potential.
eternal formats now rotate
the tragedy of printed for commander
I for sure still run Siphon Mind and Dust Bowl in a variety of decks. I agree that dust bowl is a lot of mana but it is an easy way to get some extra "spell" slots into a mono colored deck. I still run Stronghold Assassin in my queen Machesa deck
Before commander was a thing, I was always playing multi-player and ran "Syphon mind", it's currently in my commander pauper deck
Divinity of Pride has one of the best names in the game, and it was an allstar in my old Ayli Lifegain deck. I ought to revisit her.
Syphon mind is dope for mono black or discard themes.
I use doubling cube in my urza high artificer artifact deck. I also use doubling cube in my mono black demon tribal deck. Still a great card, get your cabal coffers off then double it with the cube yes please 😊
doubling cube is great in my galazeth deck cause i can already make ridiculous mana but it taps for mana itself until i make 7-8 treasures.
Hey, I have twilight prophet and divinity of pride in the same deck
I was bummed twilight prophet cost so much for so long because I love seb mckinnon so I really wanted to collect it for the art

You’ll still win games with them and your opponents might even fist bump you for going retro
I used twightlight prophet in my new vamp deck. Card was one of the mvps in my few games with the deck
I love it in Rakdos, Lord of Riots. It synergizes quite well in the mid/late game after the city's blessing is online.
I play it in a Burakos party deck where the treasures help you getting the city's blessing online pretty fast. So far the value from this card was always highly appreciated.
Hoarding Broodlord has completely replaced runescarred in all my deck
Why was surveryor’s kite played? Talismans, signets, diamonds, sol ring, most moxen are pretty old
Before ramping was op in commander. 2-3 mana cards couldn't finish a game so a bunch of old cards relied on having lands in hand to ramp out into things that could end the game.
I think cards like slave of bolas fell off when covid lockdown first hit and people started playing virtually more.
Good point. Likely a big reason why a lot of theft cards fell off too
I run Doubling Cube in my mono green Omnath, Locus of Mana deck for obvious reasons… which happens to also be eldrazi themed😮
The trouble with slave of Bolas is that there are so many three mana value red cards that do the same thing or even more
I remember clones being in nearly every blue deck I played against before the rules change. They were really common where I played as an effective way to remove a commander.
Yep, best way to remove commanders in blue.
Yeah it was. I remember phantasmal image was one of the most common cards I saw in the format too at one point.
I forgot about stronghold assassin. That should have been an auto includ for my grismold deck so thank you!
We have a guy in our pod who seems to be stuck in the meta of 10 years ago, a lot of these he genuinely runs in his decks 😂
Annoyingly I do like the idea of the stronghold assassin for my nemata deck though...

Slave of Bolas is one I completely forgot about, though - gonna have to slot that into Missy. 😀
I run Rune-scarred demon in two decks because it used to be hard for my to find. I think it is going to stay in my Kaalia deck for the rest of time.
Nevs disc is still a staple in mono green. One of the few true board wipes
it's not though, it doesn't hit walkers
@@ubertuna1 you are right in that but still for mono green, it is amazing
I'll take Perilous Vault :)
@@thriftypsgr
Divinity of Pride is in my Oloro deck and it’s always a problem when it’s in play. 😂
a friend of mine runs Stronghold Assassin in a Xira control deck. very very fun
Still finding a way to use Divinity of Pride in a deck, its mana cost is fantastic as a devotion enabler at least.
Divinity of pride is atrocious.... I love it.
Stronghold Assassin seems pretty good. Might need to run Scuttlemutt more to make it better though.
It's funny, I've never seen Slave of Bolas, but I find excuses to play Spinal Embrace already. This actually isn't a bad list, bet I could use some of these.
Ayo, upside down lands guy here. Pretty sure i was the guy who played syphon mind against you.
i believe so
I just added Twilight Prophet into my Sheoldred the Apocalypse deck. I’m not convinced it’s worth it but I really like the idea of it.
Probably play keen duelist instead, it gives your opponent of choice a card so politics but costs 2 mana less
Syphon mind is good but not so good in a discard deck. You often run into your opponents not having cards in hand and you draw nothing.
Draw 3 for 4 isnt horrible, but making opponents discard makes it top notch
Maybe I’m an old
Man, but I still brew with the “old” staples. Maybe bc the are close to my heart or they are tried and true!
I have both Twilight Prophet and Divinity of Pride in my Oloro deck.
i have syphon mind in my anhelo deck and it does wonders
I own a Stronghold Assassin. Maybe I should slot it into my Judith deck
I think most of these are cards that haven’t been reprinted in like 10 years so newer players don’t know they exist
Stronghold Assassin fits into Henzie.
I think the real thing with these cards is that it requires games to go on longer than they do nowadays. If your casual games end up as 4-player solitaire are they really casual games? 😂
I dont play magic that much like before but i think the reason is also printing of new cards so players try to use new cards is too much new cards printing today thats my opinion, nice video , is too much cards today in all formats so people prefer new cards .
I use dragon brood other. Pretty cool
I Still use the Rune-scarred Demon. sacrifice that dude and bring him back many times to anoy everyone
I run Divinity of Pride in my Karlov deck. Although realistically there are prolly "better" cards I could be running, but I think it's neat, so
I feel like alot of generic good cards have stopped seeing as kuch plau over time as decks have been gotten more tools and be able to be more and more focused on a spefic strategy and had less slots to fill. Which is probably why alot of these cards see less play now.
I have journeyors kite in my izzet deck so I have ways to get lands.
Let’s goooo Demo! Time for my daily dose of EDH Deckbuilding!
Tutoring in the format was critical back in the day because your commander could get tucked in your library. I kinda wish that still was a thing
I have syphon mind in tergrid lol
I run slave of Bolas in my xevlor deck
All great cards! I've been playing since 1994. Good to see these cards get some use.
When you have arasta and ophiomancer, dragonbroodmother gets edged out
So a 8/8 flyer for 5 finishes the game and is sooo good but a 6/6 Flyer that tutors anything for 7 is ok? Doesn't make sense... The 6/6 flyer that tutor is just gonna end soooo many more games..
pretty sure i didn't say that anything in this video is soooo good. and i have never ever seen a run-scarred demon end a game.
all these cards have been way power crepted. Even in casual pods these cards will get stomped out.
Syphon Mind has a spot in my, as yet unplayed, Tergrid deck.
Syphon mind would be great in a Tergrid deck
First
youre truly somebody
hater thing to say
