"Every meal is a banquet. Every paycheck is a fortune. Every formation is a parade."!!!! A statement of thoughtfulness and gratitude with a tough attitude! I love it! Puts things in perspective doesn't it!
I watch bush craft type videos to help me relax. Being out doors in the woods at night with a campfire is my therapy. It's the ultimate way to calm the spirit and just relax
YEAH, more Bacon! And I totally forgot about Ash Cakes from Boy Scouts. Yep, when we did Pioneer skills...the REAL Scouting program. Count me in for online course. I now live on ten acres with a creek and all manner of trees. Good to go!
Outstanding "fireside chat", Cpl. I sincerely hope that once this world wide crisis is behind us that it provides us all with some lessons learned; number one of which would be to re-prioritize what it is that's important in our lives and concentrate on the only things that truly matter. To me, that's health, love and family/friends. All the money, gadgets, toys, having the latest and greatest thingamajig, etc. amounts to exactly nothing without those 3 things I mentioned. (again, at least in my opinion.) I also hope that the new-found general surge in looking out for our most vulnerable and helping our "neighbours" continues long past this pandemic. Thanks again Cpl. All the best to you and yours from a currently-serving Canadian sailor.
Outstanding! Still making better world's; Msgt. Apone "Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I *love* being in the field"! Indeed!
Back when I was a kid( late 1960’s early 1970’s ) I was not uncommon of me to hop on my bicycle and ride from my house down to Love Field airport and back ( 20 miles give or take a few miles) and would be gone for hours. There was no gps or cell phones! If I needed to call home just used the change in my pocket and a pay phone. As far as directions was the phone book and a city map!
In regards to you thanking us, we thank you, sir, for you taking time to make a channel and go out into nature, film, record and upload content, after he time it takes to review your content and then edit it, to educate us. Truly, thank you because I have learned and I continue to learn from you.
Outstanding video, great setup, with the tarp over the tree, the long fire, with the screen, and that chow, you made! Lots of great Information! Keep on, keeping on brother!
I can tell you what I do. I love cowboy camping when it's colder. I bought a wool blanket from harbor freight and sewed it into a sleeping bag shape. I slide my thermarest inside and sleep on it. It adds warmth and the wool protects it from embers. I even have an extra one to slip over my nylon sleeping bag for the same reason sometimes. Extra weight but worth it to both protect expensive gear and add extra warmth. The bags cost me $11 a piece.
A cheap $30 Thermarest Ridgerest accordian style foam pad or a cheap and packable $60 Thermarest ProLite inflatable pad for summer use would be more comfy for your back. A $200 Exped Down mat xp9 is nice for winter use. As for spark retardant material, it's not the lightest but either a cheap 4ft wide canvas painters tarp from Harbor Freight or a siliconized fiberglass mat material they use for stovejacks from ripstopbytheroll can work wonders. As others have mentioned, those closed cell pads from Wal-Mart would also work and cheap enough not to cry if they get burn marks.
For the sleeping pad: what about combining a blow up pad with a cheap, thin thrift store type wool blanket (doesn't need to be 100% wool). Sew the blanket into a sleeve that fits the pad. Install buttons/toggles for the closure. This gives you the comfort of the blow up pad with some spark protection. It also would add some insulation value in the cold. In the summer you can take the wool sleeve off bc you won't need a big fire to keep warm anyway and that negates the spark worry. Plus, you can do a "how-to" video for the making of this revolutionary piece of gear. Call it, "The Corporal's Cover." You'll make millions!!!
"Time on deck!" I love that Navy talk. Corporal I enjoy your videos. I'm retired and would love to bush craft. I am an expat living in the Philippines. Not too much opportunity to practice the art of bush craft. But I was making a minimal kit before this lock down started. My back yard is 2 meters x 2 meters and I'm trying to figure out how to practice there. But necessity is the father of invention. Life is slowly returning to normal here, I emphasize the word slowly. I have lots of preping plans as soon as this lock down ends. We had Plastic tubs with canned and powdered food just for something like this. This virus has shown me the "flaws in my system" so I will make adjustments. I have your videos to thank for teaching me how to make the best of the outdoors. Thank you.
I'm an expat in the Philippines too (Bohol island). Retired Army. Getting ready to hike the Bataan Death March historical route as soon as the lockdown ends.
I was also a kid before the Internet age!! And I remember how much fun I had with nothing to play with except for our imaginations!!! Playing with wooden building blocks or legos, board games, tag, hide and seek!!! Oh man those were the days!!! Let’s bring them back!!!! There’s no school like the old school!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I am playing catch up on the video's, always enjoy them and alway learning, I am game for the class, just say when. Enjoyed the video and as always be safe and HH my friend.
Hey Corporal. Man I love your videos!! Just a suggestion from a beginner hiker n soon to be camper. Could u do a video where u show us how to use a compass n maybe a map to navigate into the woods until u find a campsite. Then how u navigate back to where u started. I think it would make a good tutorial if we were to try it. You’ve done compass tutorial already but I’d like to see it in action. Thank u Sir!!
Outstanding Show? I’ve not ever seen anything you’ve taught me that wasn’t beyond outstanding!! Love your locations, equipment and lack of! Almost look like you have been on a surfboard with that tree stance? Ha Haa,Happy Easter everyone
Chilled out but relevant survival and bushcraft videos with good food. What’s not to like? And you entertained/informed us in lockdown. Nice one brother.

In the theme of getting out and making the best of the time we got on our hands - I took my wife out to a cup of coffee. On my (very cheap but new and untested) wood gas stove. Now, you might think that this is not a "real" enough adventure, but I am blind and my wife is visually impaired. We walked about three km, to a larger, wooded park. Set up the little stove. It was surprisingly easy, even though I had not used it before. And then, you know, literally picked some sticks of the ground and just... made some "cowboy coffee". (With Coffee Cheese, which is a Northern speciality for this country... Small pieces of baked cheese (think Halloumi) in the coffee). Again - this might not seem like a huge adventure to anyone else. But we are blind. We don't get out a lot on a NORMAL week. During the quarantine / self isolation phase here, it is near impossible to get a seeing guide. So we gave us the time to potentially get lost. And had just a very nice time outdoors.
Sleep mat recommendation: the “Finnish Sleeping Mat” by Savotta. The size of your typical military roll mat but with a built in ground sheet. Have been using mine for at least six years now and it’s virtually bombproof. Been watching your work for nearly three years Corp and you’ve come a long way since then. Keep up the great work brother.
I use a z-fold thermarest pad as a thermal break / anti-puncture layer and a klymit recon pad on top for comfort. It’s not much weight or bulk, the recon packs down to the size of a travel pillow. Maybe a wool surplus blanket over the pad would save you from the sparks? I’m in the same boat as you, a little comfort goes a long way... and the colder it is, the worse my knees hurt. Chris Ledoux was right about the years & miles. You’d be a great homesteader / farmer... out standing in your field. Bah dum tiss.
I'm a hammocker when I go hiking, but I've often felt that a large fallen tree would be the perfect place to seek shelter when the winds are gale force. Last fall while hiking on a ridge on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia, a large tree blew down about 30 yards away. I heard the first crack and took off running with a full pack. When I realized that the tree was falling parallel to the trail, I stopped and watched it fall. The wind didn't let up, so I spent that night in a shelter at the edge of a field. A good sized tree trunk should offer protection from other falling trees. Like you, I had childhood friends who had to do face time or phone time - no cell phones. We would meet up to hop on a bicycle for a two mile ride to a good fishing pond, or a 20 mile ride to go swimming in the ocean. Other than that, we played b-ball, hit a ball around the field out back, or just went walking in the woods. We were fit by default. Thanks for the excellent video.
Excellent video. When I was many years younger I hunted on the move. Many a night was spent like that for a few nights in a row. The best sleeping pad/mattress that I ever had was acquired when I was in the military. It was inflatable, puncture resistant (not puncture proof) extremely well insulated (had a fleece like material on the exterior) and was shaped like our bags so it would fit in a bivy sack. The down side was that it was heavy, 3 1/2 to 4 pounds and was a bit bulky. I don't recall the manufacturer, I have scoured the internet trying to find another one with no luck. If I am able to locate them I will send you a link on Facebook so you can check them out.
Tasters Choice + Swiss Miss = Nestle Coffee Crisp. Fire wall and cowboy camping. Reminds me of the good ol days in Scouts as a teen. :) Have a good one.
I really appreciate your videos bro. My 15 year old daughter who’s a staff sgt. in The Young Marines and my 8 year old son who’s a new recruit really enjoy your videos. We do a bunch of camp outs and practice what we learn. Thanks a million for sharing your wisdom. P.s. since Los Angeles Forest have been closed to us we’ve been camping in our backyard.
I agree with the changes that inadvertently happen because of the lock down I ride my bike at night and I noticed more people sitting on their porches and fires in front yard walking with the children riding bikes with their children not very much traffic and I stopped and thought this reminds me a lot of the 60s and one positive things going to come out of this is that maybe people will slow down and learn to appreciate the small things like this
I just found the channel and I'm loving it! I've shared it with several friends already. I love that you take the time to explain the why. I've been trying some of the things in my back yard and I'm wanting to step it up a notch. I'm ready to put my confidence to the test and go to the woods for my own sole trip.
You could call the coffee "corpachino". You could use an inflatable mattress with a canvas sleeve sewn together to slide the inflatable into, like a canvas brouse bag. If you use good canvas, the weave will be tight enough to prevent sparks from getting thru. If you made one out of a welding blanket, it would be fire proof. It would be a bit heavier though. Any way you look at it, inflatables are the comfort, all you need to do is protect them. Maybe even a wool blanket brouse bag.
Excellent idea with the canvas. Heavier tho for sure. Heck I've been using thermarests but I'm really liking the trash bag and leaves etc. idea because I'm all about UL
for a sleeping pad, i just use a thicker yoga mat, its more then a bit bulky on the bottom of the pack but its squishy and meant to be able to be stretched out on and in 3 season conditions does okay keeping insulated, havnt done a winter test yet but i imagine with an extra blanket or something on top itd come through
Outstanding Vid Corporal, depending on cost i would be interested in the online class. I'm Canadian and my dollar is devalued against your so, remember your international fans. I'm willing to learn, love your just the facts style, with out all the unnecessary talk.
The search for the Ultimate cup of coffee is reminiscent of the Devin Townsend album Ziltoid who is an Alien that comes to earth in search of the Ultimate cup of coffee. Corporal Ziltoid is Outstanding.
We're doing good in South Ga the little town I'm in Adel only has seven cases of covid 19 as a fire medic I don't get to sit at home but like alot of things I've done in life I knew what I was signing up for. That being said thank you Shawn for all you do
50 years ago I went on a snowshoe trip and deliberately did not take spoon or fork. I took dehydrated potatoes and jerky strips and used the jerky to stir and eat the potatoes. I took some raisins and hot chocolate. Calories enough, spice from the jerky.
Another hit......not from the dead tree - lol. We're living vicariously thru you brother...and yes, Still locked down in Vietnam.....Thank you for your hard work and dedication. As for the online classes - hands on is a better way to learn. Take a group out for 1 week and have fun.
Another fantastic video, thank you, Corporal. Thank you also for sharing what your friend had said about each meal being a banquet, each paycheck being a fortune and each formation being a parade. 🤟😀👍
That is a great philosophy, "Every meal is a banquet, every pay check is a fortune, and, every formation is a parade." Great words that we can keep. Gratitude is an attitude. Stay healthy! Thank you for sharing a part of your day with us!
I caught this video bc of the minimal equip. You mentioned an online course. Id like a little more “security” before I start solo backpacking trips. If something were to happen I’d feel more comfortable troubleshooting issues. I’ve always found something helpful with your videos. Much appreciated.
I want to thank you for teaching me so much in such a short amount of time. I've been following you on TH-cam for a while now and I successfully completed my first solo overnighter and it went perfectly. Had beenies and weenies for dinner and bacon and eggs for breakfast.... Outstanding. The tasters choice house blend is really good with a little sugar added. Again.... Thank you
I dont suggest blow up pads, they are comfortable sure. The best pad I have found is the USMC thermarest from keepshooting. com they are $9. If you want an inflatable I would go with a Klymit inertia blow up pad, ontop of a foam pad, possible with another thin foam pad on top of that, something like the gossamer gear 1/8" thick pad
Love your videos man. Been trying out your campfire recipes. Very good. Only one thing with the bacon, beans, onions, and hot sauce that you use. My family is ready for me to solo camp outside the house! 🤣
Beanie weenie and ghetto dumplings! As always your video was outstanding. You don’t usually soapbox, but your message was on point, we simply have to come out the other side of this and do better. I can’t wait to get back to the woods. Keep up the great work!
I think using those Leaf and Lawn bags is a great idea, and I haven't seen any other survival channel do that ( albeit, I haven't done a lot of looking). If it was up to me on minimal gear, I'd take a whole box of them with me, and let me tell you why.... Some years ago I got trapped overnight at work. It was one of those situations where I was pulling an 18 hour day, and the location had to be manned so long as the doors were unlocked. The building was unheated, and it was 17F inside, and the power went out a half hour before I was supposed to leave so the doors would not lock. So I'm freezing, with no power, obligated to stay there, so I went into the store room looking for anything to keep warm with and found... Leaf and Lawn bags. I used 3 of them to wrap up in. Admittingly, it was still cold, but they kept me warm enough to say alive until help could come the following morning. Edit: oh and, I would up pulling a 24 hour shift that day.
Another week, another knowledge drop. Your videos convinced me to try using wind screens, and they are awesome! Just goes to show you are never to old to learn new skills.
Good God Corp! You're right as always 😉 let's change the future. I'm the generation before you it seems and I loved my childhood/teen years. The freedom and open nature of the world. Time to get back there, including Sunday dinners with the old folks
I will pay for online classes from you. More recent vid sounds like its coming along but im game for it. Thanks for being such an inspiration to my family and myself especially.
Shawn, I think it's a great and a wonderful thing in what you do and give with your heart as well as your mind. The fact that your willing to do and give classes online for people that are willing to learn, prepare and perform the task is not just awesome but outstanding AF, brother. Keep doing what you're doing your at the top. I for one could use some pointers and would love to participate in your classes.
Thermarest ridge rest and z light are good closed cell foam pads buta littleexpensive. Alp mountaineering also makes good foam pads. For air pads you can't beat Klymit for quality and price. Thanks for your efforts.
This episode had my favorite uplifting positive message at the end of any episode of corporals corner. Thank you Corporal Kelly for being rational, motivating, and for not capitalizing on the fear aspect of these crazy times. God bless you.
Hi Shawn. Just a quick suggestion - hope this may help... An inflatable sleeping mat will obviously provide the best comfort and insulating properties so why not combine it inside one of these.... Bushcraft Outfitters 5' x 8' Multipurpose Emergency-Survival Tarp (MEST) - their multicam versions are fire retardant. Fold in half lengthways, tie the corner loops together and insert an inflatable sleep mat. You'll have a much comfier, warmer solution. Your mat will also stay dry, have added protection from any rough ground it's put on, and it will also be campfire spark proof.
Sir, you put together subscription-type course work, and I’m definitely lookin’ for a way in! Thank you again for all that you’re doing. As you’ve said, we’ll get through this! 🤕
Brother I haven't been able to sleep on the ground in over a decade! I make it a point to use a raised bed, tying an oilskin tarp around two wrist thick logs to make a wide bed and folding a good queen sized Wool blanket to lay on top for a cushy insulator! Alot of times I'd just use fold a 2nd larger Oilskin tarp around the blanket and use a 2nd blanket & a poncho liner with the 2nd tarp and fold myself in on top of the Cot I built and use a fire for a radiant heat, give the mountain whether to Warm up & I'll be happy to do a Small intro short video on it!
Ok, that touch my heart; We'd go out into the woods of West Virginia with my Great Grandmother. At lunch she'd make those cakes and a topping of what ever we were picking.
Have you ever tried the Taylors coffee bags I use them camping always found them to be really good and strong. Hope your well another great video keep at it mate
With restrictions lifted been mega hiking in south Australia past two weeks, clean air, fitness good, feeling fantastic, love your videos, nature’s awesome, good to go
So I guess I'm the only one on here who gets flash backs of Burt Reynolds when you pose under your shelter(s), lol? You are a crack up, Corporal. And I love your heart to heart towards the end. Please continue on with the good work, sir.
shawn I'm interested in an online class. however my time is not my own. Single dad, special needs son. I've camped & fished all my life but it was tent and car camping, not back packing or bushcraft/field camping. I'm a former (long time ago) boy scout so I know some rudimentary knots, etc... forgot all I ever learned about using a compass, way points etc. I'd love to learn how to properly sharpen my axe, my knives, finer skills in fire starting, in wood working/carving, recommended/opinions on footwear, clothing, etc, etc.
Side note, I’ve had many insulated airmats, none capable against dropping straight on the ground. Even with ground cover sometimes they found a way to get punctured. And none I’ve seen fire retardant, but maybe a wool blanket cut down so it’s not so heavy and shown up on the ends to act like a shield. It would provide more insulation and some fire protection. It would be much better then a welding blanket, those are full of fiberglass. So now I carry a piece of tyvek doubled up for ground cover, it’s light and tough! I carry the Neoair Xtherm in the winter or snowshoe backpacking or a Big Agnes Q-Cir DLux XL wide, it’s 3.5” think and 30” wide, it’s a Cadillac of air mats, it’s my heaviest piece of kit, but I sleep like a baby. I even took it to do the lost coast trail! Thing is a beast to carry but it makes me happy when I tuck in!
Ok, so that flying with the waterproof is shingling. 👍"...like a kid at Christmas ". Great giggle for Easter Monday iso-time. Thanks for knot info too 👍🐞🌿Trudi
Dude your channel just popped up on my recommendations. I'm loving it man. You've got a good personality and a lot of good information. New subscriber. 😁
When I was a kid, in summer always outside , in the woods . With you on that , Cpl.Kelly, my wife Heard you talk about texting , glad you said that, she’s bad for it. Lol thanks! The camp was outstanding as the food looked good too. Now the air mattress , I have used a , believe or not a pool float with a 5x8 tarp under and a wool blanket over it , Army issue, I have not had a problem yet. Thanks Cpl.Kelly, your channel is squared away and its more than outstanding it’s Freedom , bacon and apple pie !

I'm here for Corpachino 🤘🏼😆😆😆
Excellent idea with the canvas. Heavier tho for sure. Heck I've been using thermarests but I'm really liking the trash bag and leaves etc. idea because I'm all about UL
Those that can do. Those who can't watch. ... you have great videos. Thanks for the grate times..
The corporal eats better in the woods than most people do in their homes
for a sleeping pad, i just use a thicker yoga mat, its more then a bit bulky on the bottom of the pack but its squishy and meant to be able to be stretched out on and in 3 season conditions does okay keeping insulated, havnt done a winter test yet but i imagine with an extra blanket or something on top itd come through
Outstanding Vid Corporal, depending on cost i would be interested in the online class. I'm Canadian and my dollar is devalued against your so, remember your international fans. I'm willing to learn, love your just the facts style, with out all the unnecessary talk.
Canadian? isn't the top tuber up there?
@@recall5811 What I thought you were the top tuber??
Mad Mike I don’t have a million subs and get 400k views per video
I can't get enough of this channel it's just that addictive. Also hot damn does your cooking look great.
When it comes to your “rake sticks” keep them both, lash them together to make a six tined rake with the nub for digging... 🤔
Dude. I've been waiting for this all day. 3 beers in and TH-cam tells me you got a new one.
Outstanding.
Jesus loves you dude.
Be safe.
The search for the Ultimate cup of coffee is reminiscent of the Devin Townsend album Ziltoid who is an Alien that comes to earth in search of the Ultimate cup of coffee. Corporal Ziltoid is Outstanding.
Thank you for continuing to create new content. It keeps me inspired to continue to enjoy nature during these uncertain times.
We're doing good in South Ga the little town I'm in Adel only has seven cases of covid 19 as a fire medic I don't get to sit at home but like alot of things I've done in life I knew what I was signing up for. That being said thank you Shawn for all you do
Matthew Abbott I’m from sparks ...
@@kenbarrett2500 cool deal your in my fire district stay safe Bud
Matthew Abbott I own a plumbing repair business. I’m out in it myself , but limiting the amount of in house work I’m doing .. and gloves and mask on
@@kenbarrett2500 That's a good thing just stay safe my friend we already have seven too many cases so just be careful
50 years ago I went on a snowshoe trip and deliberately did not take spoon or fork. I took dehydrated potatoes and jerky strips and used the jerky to stir and eat the potatoes. I took some raisins and hot chocolate. Calories enough, spice from the jerky.
The Corporal brings bacon everywhere, im pretty sure he packs it before his flint sparker lol
Another hit......not from the dead tree - lol. We're living vicariously thru you brother...and yes, Still locked down in Vietnam.....Thank you for your hard work and dedication. As for the online classes - hands on is a better way to learn. Take a group out for 1 week and have fun.
Went was a kid my best friend was a pile of dirt. I'm 63 now. And I still play in the dirt (camping)
Dennis from Delaware
Another fantastic video, thank you, Corporal. Thank you also for sharing what your friend had said about each meal being a banquet, each paycheck being a fortune and each formation being a parade. 🤟😀👍
Am watching this a year later and I fuckin love it buddy! Have a kickass day and I love you Uncle Corporal!
Everyone of his videos are excellent he has a way of putting things in a very good perspective
The Corporal surfing on a log was pure happiness 😁😁
This old grumpy Devil Dog has even learned a thing or two from a younger Devil Dog. Keep the content coming Shawn!
Love your videos man. Been trying out your campfire recipes. Very good. Only one thing with the bacon, beans, onions, and hot sauce that you use. My family is ready for me to solo camp outside the house! 🤣
Wise words as always Corps. Thank you for the video and all the hard work.
Wow I'm early. Just wanted to say thanks for the knowledge!
Absolutely,, get outdoors and share nature with family. 🏕️
Was s thinking the same thing.... Though they probably aren't a whole lot more comfortable
This episode had my favorite uplifting positive message at the end of any episode of corporals corner. Thank you Corporal Kelly for being rational, motivating, and for not capitalizing on the fear aspect of these crazy times. God bless you.
Dammit you and dave are gonna drive me nuts with this sold out on the Bedroll cookset. Y'all better be making a whole ton of them :)
more dropping Friday www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/collections/shawn-kelly?ref=s9jgxrwlnqv
Even when watching a camp fire on TH-cam the smoke still follows me. Lol
I learned a new way to prep my kindling. Thanks roadie
You crack me up dude! The poker face while being silly as hell always makes me smile. And so much knowledge as well. Outstanding! Good to go!
Thank you for all that you do for us. Those are some great videos.
With restrictions lifted been mega hiking in south Australia past two weeks, clean air, fitness good, feeling fantastic, love your videos, nature’s awesome, good to go
"Which one do I keep, which one do I kill." Man that snuck in there on me I was cracking up. 6:40
So I guess I'm the only one on here who gets flash backs of Burt Reynolds when you pose under your shelter(s), lol? You are a crack up, Corporal. And I love your heart to heart towards the end. Please continue on with the good work, sir.
He does make his own rake. Very cool. Love this stuff!
shawn I'm interested in an online class. however my time is not my own.
Organised, honed skills and knowledge coupled with great delivery. Great one pot cooking as well. Kudos.
I think the online courses would be a good thing, you're a good teacher. Hope you are having a good Easter.
I’m most definitely interested, as long as it’s affordable. Let’s make it happen.
Thanks Cpl.Kelly, your channel is squared away and its more than outstanding it’s
Freedom , bacon and apple pie !
Thats the biggest ridge pole I've ever seen 👍
I _love_ those bird sounds in the background! To hell with setting up a viable camp - I'd be off with my camera looking for birds!
I'm down for that online course. Love your videos, watching from the Philippines.
