- Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth, with temperatures reaching as low as -90°C (-130°F). Nevertheless, several dozen research stations are located there, and Antarctica's population reaches 5,000 in the summer. But how do these stations function in such brutal conditions? How are they insulated? How are they heated? And what other challenges do engineers and architects face?
