Ru Ca you are so right!! Gary will be remembered for his tremendous showmanship, a legendary guitarist, and brilliant songwriter and producer AND the reason SO many people picked up a guitar. they wanted to be like Gary. an amazing man, a seemingly blessed with a wonderful wife who loved and encouraged the man who was once a rock icon, but needed his little wife to tell him he was worth something. that makes me cry. miss you so very much Gary. so happy for all your dream years. you did have good years, but are missed terribly. love you Gary...

Such a tragic loss. Gary was an extremely hurt individual. You can look into his eyes and see how much pain and suffering he went through. He meant so much to so many people...not just on stage. He was a human being with feelings just like the rest of us. Very sensitive man...you could see it in the words he wrote. Yes, I also want to smack people who cut him down for commenting on his weight. They better hope like he!! That addiction never grabs hold of them. RIP Gary...you will be greatly missed and remembered always.

I saw them in the summer of '75 in a baseball park called Tempe Stadium in Phoenix . The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band opened up for REO, who opened up for Aerosmith, who preceded Johnny Winter{just amazing...} and then came ZZ Top, who were still wearing their sequined cowboy suits back then. My experience is a bit fuzzy because of ... well, never mind, but the whole show was one of the most killer concerts of my life. Gary was like lightning on fire playing at warp speed. Winter was wearing this really tall top hat and the sound of the bands was bouncing off of this small mountain that was right next to the stadium. Wonderful show. That is how I will always remember him. With respect, Robert Arlan Nelson

Gary instinctively knew what sound should be the next following sound to make it jam, make it work, and he did it continuously. He put the kickass in Rock n Roll and put the love in the ballads, which made REO Speedwagon. He was a natural and a gifted guitar player, homegrown, down to earth, and I saw him with Suburban 9 To 5 on numerous occasions. I had the record “ Elevator Operator “ and wore it out. He should be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame with or Without REO Speedwagon, and he was a heavy influence on many modern day guitarists. I can hear Gary’s sound in their music…Awesome! Gary drank to much and then he got sober. He was sober during the time of this taping. He said to reunite on the right terms. What he meant by that was : He wanted to do hard rock songs. He hated the ballads that Kevin wanted to do. Kevin left the band after making the second album because of artistic differences. Gary may have been drinking to much when he left but, I think he left more because of artistic differences than alcohol. He was very angry that Kevin was taking over and calling the shots when it came to playing ballads instead of hard rock.

Seems I read Kevin was pretty mad Behind the Music showed this clip and at their next show he told Dave he was in the band for life. Dave is a good guitar player and if you can get over the fact he replaced Gary, he fits well with them. He actually gave me a pick at a show in Owensboro, Ky in the early nineties. He threw me one and I missed it (drunk) so he laid one down on stage in front of me, as I was at the stage. I still have that pick. And I have used it. Thanks Dave.

Dave is a very good guitar player and fills the role just fine. Gary was awesome but he really was just a contributor. It's shameful he lost control of himself. REO is a tight band with a rock solid song catalog and I wouldn't want a drunk screwing it up, either. That part is Gary's own fault. He was such an appreciated part of the band and let his bandmembers and fans down. Kevin may be arrogant but his vocals and songwriting took REO from an "okay" band to a much higher level. I see where most on this thread would disagree with that for reasons that make no real sense to me and I think they're full of shit. RIP, Gary, but that wasn't the way to end it, man.

REALITY Bytes: You make some valid point, but THE REALITY is that Kevin was a HUGE part of Gary's fall from grace. I was there, and I know. He pushed him more and more and then made a big, over-dramatic deal about every little thing Gary did. Have you ever really watched them, either live or on video? Gary was the one who sought Kevin out because he KNEW they would be magic together; it never crossed his mind that for all his efforts to bring Kevin in (twice), that Kevin would use everything he knew would push Gary over the edge far enough to take it all from him. If the rest of the guys were not under threat of the same fate, they would have fought harder, maybe, for Gary, but Kevin had them all by the proverbial balls, thanks to the advice he was getting from a legal troll I will not name. But Kevin overestimated his star power and personal appeal with her too, in the end, and he didn't quite have the lucrative outcome he was expecting. He got rid of his perceived competition, and in doing so, he lost the most provocative component of his own appeal to the crowd...Kevin's voice was a great compliment to Gary's songs...Gary knew he couldn't carry the band vocally, but his artist's ear and composer's mind foresaw the perfect blend long before he ever approached Kevin the first time. People don't understand that. Watch the way Gary is onstage when they played...Even while he had 30,000 fans captivated with his talents and his stage presence, you should notice that he never fails to acknowledge Kevin before he steps back and Kevin grabs the reins again. At any time during a show, you will see Gary look at Kevin and smile when he is playing, saying to Kevin "THIS IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS MY FRIEND!" He never fails to see them as ONE, he never fails to let the world see his respect and appreciation for Kevin and for his fans. Find just ONE video where you can see Kevin showing the same. Kevin is GREED. He has nothing to offer on his own. If he did, HIS new REO would not need to rely on Gary's songs and they would be playing their own originals. Kevin didn't even let Gary have his own music, and Kevin is still collecting THOSE royalties as we speak...Gary never got a dime. Sorry, this is on Kevin, not Gary and since Gary was out of the band, they have NEVER reached a higher level, EVER. Now I see Kevin even takes credit for some of the song lyrics I know for a FACT Gary wrote. And Kevin tells the stories behind some of those lyrics as if they are his own stories to tell.
DID YOU FORGET I AM STILL ALIVE, Kevin? Well I am.

@@ayamalone1922 Well, that was an interesting take and I don't know how you would know all that and let's establish that, no, I do not know any of these guys personally and, yes, I have seen REO live both with Gary and the lineup from the last 28 years with Bryan Hitt and Dave Amato. I even saw the Michael Murphy lineup back in the early 70's. You may be accurate on all that you said but I still lean toward my conjecture regarding several aspects of REO. 1) Is Kevin Cronin the world's greatest frontman? No, and sometimes he's annoying when he seems to think he's "working the crowd". But, he's the best frontman for this band. I can't believe some people complain about his voice (70's-80's voice on the recordings). His uniqueness put the band on the map to stay. Kevin has an angelic, unmistakable tone with the ability to still rock hard and I believe that is the signature of REO and why they still draw crowds today. 2) If there was a ying and a yang then it was Kevin and Gary together. I totally agree the two were awesome together in the band with no disrespect whatsoever to Neal, Alan, Gregg and then Bruce. In fact, for years I used to say "Gary Richrath has to be the most underrated guitar player in the rock music business". His style was so cool and he made it look effortless. You seem to indicate Kevin stole the show over Gary and I really don't think the fans felt that way as Kevin was expected to lead and Gary was technically a supporting player on guitar even though his playing ability and stage persona made him a bona fide star. When I saw the Mike Murphy lineup Gary stood out even more but I believe Mike wasn't that strong as a frontman even though he fit well with the band at that time. 3) Songwriting. You made some bold claims there and I don't know how you could substantiate all that but from what I am aware of, even though Gary wrote some good songs without Kevin, the songs that made the difference were either written by them together or by Kevin. I believe Kevin and the current lineup have every right to use those songs as their setlist. In fact, Dave Amato once said when he joined he thought it would be another 3 year gig but 28 years later, 10 more than Gary if my math is correct, he's still in and he said the songs are his reason for staying. I'll really go out on a limb and say that I think the second greatest songwriting duo behind Lennon-McCartney was Cronin-Richrath because, at least in my opinion, the songs are really that good. I know a lot of people would love to excoriate me for proposing that but I happen to feel that way. I have seen the band in recent years and the majority of the crowd was singing every damn song along with the band. We knew all the lyrics. I had never witnessed anything like in over 40 years of attending rock concerts. You say Kevin stole those songs? I'll have to say I question that or I just misunderstood what you meant. 4) Gary's downfall. That is one of the great disappointments in the history of this band and, yes, Kevin probably did push Gary in the direction he wanted the band to go but I think Kevin was right. Gary had the rock and Kevin knew how to make it roll. If Gary chose to drink his life away over it then that's his personal responsibility. He was not the original guitarist in the band, though he was the best, and I never saw REO as Gary's band. In fact, the last time I saw the band the only original member still in the band from the very first time I had seen them live was Neal. I thought if this really has to be "somebody's band" then maybe that someone is Neal.

It's a real shame it never happened. But Kevin is absolutely correct. Until someone fully becomes disciplined, dealing with a addict makes things impossible. I don't think many people realize the how much it gets in the way of relationships - business or personal - if it's not under control. It's one thing when you're young and reckless and everyone around you is the same way. That does not last beyond a certain age. The effects are completely different. I think Gary really wanted it to happen. I think it could've gotten really close, actually. Glad he & Kevin at least played together one last time in 2013.

The worst part about alcoholism is that it WILL not let go of you through self-discipline and will power alone. Kevin is asking Gary to conquer something that cannot be defeated on your own. Thank God for Gary's wife. I hope Kevin and Gary get back together, but it's just this kind of intolerance and misunderstanding of alcoholism as a disease that keeps egos in the way of healing friendships, or, in this case, an amazing musical duo.

      You're wrong.
Alcoholism causes the body to crave it even if the person wants to stop they can't.....the only way to stop is to dry out with rehab and to be away from the alcohol, it's a disease at that point.
It starts out as a habit, but severe drinking causes the disease of Alcoholism.
A habit is MUCH easier to stop.

Tank MacNamara - Ive been an REO fan since their early days. My 1st REO album was 'Live - You Get What You Play For', and then i went and bought all the albums that came before the live album (or so I thought). So I must admit you had me stumped for a few minutes when you wrote about liking/listening to the 3 REO albums that Michael Murphy sang on? Huh? At the moment, I could only remember that he replaced Kevin Cronin in 1973. Cronin had already laid down all the vocals for the 3rd REO album to be titled "Ridin The Storm Out. Michael Murphy re-cut lead vocals (replacing Kevin's) for every song, and then they air-brushed his photo over Kevin's for the album cover. This album has 2 of my favorite REO tunes (Son Of A Poor Man, and Without Expression). But, with that said, I was not really a fan of Murphy's singing or style.
Now, I remember...he also sang on: REO's 4th album titled 'Lost In A Dream' from 1974, and REO's 5th album titled: 'This Time We Mean It' from 1975. Those were the only 2 (early REO) albums I didn't buy. Hearing how much you enjoy them makes me want to give them a listen. Thanks

I agree with many of the other posts here. Ever since Gary was pushed out of band by Kevin due to Gary's "living", it doesn't have the same meaning. Gary was the soul of the band, Kevin came along , played the hero ,got all the glory and then pushed Gary out of the band. Looking at this video makes me think Kevin doesn't want to reach out to Gary.

It’s very obvious that Gary has some hard feelings against Cronin, and for good reason. Cronin was the one who led the charge to throw Gary out of the band in 88! What a dirty thing to do after Gary is the one who chose Cronin; not just once, but again when they brought Kevin back! They were said to be best friends at one time. I realize that Gary had a serious drinking problem, and that should have not been tolerated. But the guy’s a friend and business partner! Why not try to help him rather than show him the door?!?!?
