This movie was the first time I experienced people in the theater yelling instructions the screen. And it started with my dad yelling "They stayed in the house?!? WHY THE HELL ARE YOU STAYING IN THE HOUSE?!?!?"

Just to relate... My first n only time reacting to a movie in a theater was Rocky. I was a very young kid. Not many in the theater. Standing up, cheering Rocky on. Good times. Thank u for reigniting the memory!!!

Regarding the last fifteen minutes of the movie, I totally relate. It's something my dad would have done too. Back in the 70's a train loaded with artillery headed for Vietnam was passing through my town trainyard and for what ever reason began to explode. Our house was about 6 miles from the tracks and it still knocked windows out. My dad piled us kids in the car and we raced off toward the explosions to watch and we stopped about a 1/2 mile away. I was terrified and begged to go back home, but my dad was having a helluva time watching the explosions and we stayed for quite a while. So staying in a haunted house would have been right up my dad's alley.

When the mom had an emotional freak out, and said she could smell her daughter; that actress convinced me she had a real experience 😳
I saw this in the theatre with my friend who was an usher at the same theatre. He knew when the jump scare hand out of the t.v. occurred and he grabbed my thigh super tight at that exact moment. This full grown man screamed like a little girl for the whole crowd to hear.
Speaking of clowns..."Killer Klowns from Outer Space" (1988) is a cult classic horror.

It also briefly features a comedian named Christopher Titus. He was the dude with glasses at the start. And now he gets paid to share his lifelong pain in joke format.
Fun Fact: Poltergeist is based on an early script that Steven Spielberg wrote in the 1970s called 'Night Skies,' which was originally intended as a sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It was a horror movie about aliens terrorizing a family in a farm house and was loosely based on the Kelly-Hopkinsville UFO encounter in 1955. The movie never got made, but elements of the script ended up in Poltergeist, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and Gremlins.
Sounds a lot like the film Signs, if I was Spielberg I'd be having a word with Shyamalan.
Production designer, Ron Cobb Alien, Aliens, The Last Starfighter), was supposed to direct "Night Skies". Rick Baker was working on aliens for the film. When the project fell through, Spielberg wouldn't give him back his designs and prototypes. Baker later claimed that ET was based on the work he did for "Night Skies".
@@richardb6260 Oh, I'm aware of that. And Baker is correct, the E.T. animatronic doll was originally one of the evil aliens created for Night Skies. You can go on Google images to see what E.T.'s original appearance was when Baker first created him. It's really disturbing. lol
@@andrewdyer384 There are some similarities with Signs, but very superficial ones. Signs borrows a lot more from The Birds and Night of the Living Dead. Besides, I doubt Spielberg would even care. He had to go though enough legal issues over the directing ownership of Poltergeist between him and Tobe Hooper. lol
@@44excalibur Yeah, Signs is structurally almost identical to the short story "The Birds" that the film is based on. and in fact I think Signs does an even better job of matching the tone of the story then even Hitchcock's film did. there's this overwhelming sense of dread thru the whole thing that i always felt the original film never quite captured. (probably has to do with the additional scenes and adding in Tippy Hedren's character instead of just focusing on the family like the story did.)
the only thing M Night didn't do, that hitchcock didn't either, was the aspect of the attacks coming in waves. in the story the birds came in on the tides. there even a "shot" of, during one of the lulls, the father looking out over the ocean and seeing all the birds just hovering off shore, waiting for high tide. flowing up and down with the waves. such a creepy bit that I hope gets included if they ever readapt it.

Yeah, time has not been kind to the peeling face scene. I remember all my friends who managed to see it back in the day would NOT shut up about it. By far the most memorable thing to a lot of people. It wasn't Rick Baker, was it? He was more Joe Dante's guy than Spielberg's, I thought - not sure off the top of my head though.
The hands peeling the face off are actually Spielberg's.

Yes it was cheaper back then to buy real skeletons from India rather than plastic ones, same with the skeletons in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

This movie scared the crap out of me as a 14-year old kid. I had my own bedroom at the time and I have to say that if there had been a tree outside my window, I would not have set foot back in my room EVER. As I got older I did read articles about how the effects were done for this film, they were groundbreaking at the time.

Holy fuck this just made my day!! Now after watching your reaction I have to say you guys are crazy. Without the end part the movie wouldn't be as great or iconic as is. Just cuz you'd make a decision to leave the house doesn't mean everyone else in that situation would even if you think you would make that choice. Wasn't months they stayed there as they were obviously moving out right after the ordeal plus people love haunted houses so not all would leave immediately. 10/10 best movie ever!!
I watched this back in the 82 was 7 years old. This movie scarred me for life as a kid. No wonder everyone from the 80s hate damn clowns.
It's funny, I was talking with a co-worker the other day about there being a time when tv stations would stop broadcasting at about 2am; they would play the National Anthem then there would be static until 6am. Poltergeist is the perfect example of something that those born after 1990 don't understand what it was like to not have a 24-hour broadcast day and overnights filled with infomercials.
It's a time capsule. There are whole generations of people now that NEVER experienced broadcast television. Cable and internet became the norm.
I was born in 86 and learned about this in classic cartoons.
Same in the UK and the final announcement would be "goodnight and don't forget to switch off your set".
TV channels went off at 10:00 PM until 6:00 AM. Later it was 11:00 PM then at 12:00 AM and on and on until 24-hours tv.
Heck, there's now more than a full generation who probably have never seen static on a screen - other than in an 'old' movie.

Fun fact, the skeletons were real....and nobody told JoBeth Williams this until the scene where she falls into the pool and they start popping up was done. Jerry Goldsmith did the music, he also did the music of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. He was a very, very well known composer.

Goldsmith's first "famous" score was for the original version of "Planet of the Apes" in 1968.
Sure they were man. Human skeleton's are just lying around for anyone to use in their movies. No laws protecting human remains and all that. Use some common sense here. This is an urban legend like many others that surround this film.

I could watch this movie 1000 times and the second I hear "Neither have you!" "Your right! You go!" I laugh my ass off. Also the burial ground quip could be about The Shining.?
More likely a reference to the Amityville Horror. thats where the trope started.
The girl that was the teenage sister,was Dominique Dunne,younger sister of actor Griffin Dunne. She was tragically murdered at age 22 a few years after the movie in front of her home by a crazy ex boyfriend.
Dominique actually died the same year the movie came out,5 months later.

Never seen someone get so frustrated at a movie, I was afraid Emily was going to burst a blood vessel. I can only say Amityville horror.
There wouldn’t be a movie without the final 15 minutes! Every movie needs a climax too. The clown for sure gave me nightmares as a kid. During this time of the movie in the 80’s it was really quite groundbreaking! It freaked me out for sure back then and is still pretty freaky.
This house is a block away from my high school. I use to pass it twice a day for 5 days and 3yrs, I would tease my friends "they only moved the headstones."
Aside from the horror aspect of this, the family is written really well/acted believably.
One of the things I love about Spielberg movies is parents being people. They aren't saints, they aren't perfect, but God, they are doing their best. The older I get, the more I find myself relating to them.
Incidentally, the Poltergeist productions had a couple of deaths related to them (some naturally occurring, but others not). The actress who played the teenage daughter was strangled to death by an abusive former boyfriend at the age of 22, and the little girl who played Carol Anne starred in all three Poltergeist films, but died at the age of 12 (due to a hospital misdiagnosis). There seemed to be a lot of stuff like that surrounding the production (the boy was almost strangled to death by the clown prop on the first take).

I was an adolescent when I saw this in the theatre in '82, and cackled when the clown was trying to strangle Robbie. I absolutely adored it when the dust and glitter came out from under the kids' beds. Loved the relationships of the family, regardless of their decisions. This film is in my top 20 of all-time. I find it highly entertaining.
1982 was an insane year for movies The Thing, Star Trek II , Blade Runner , Poltergeist, E.T.
I've never seen Emily get so affected by reacting to a movie before whether it's fear or having a rage attack due to stupid behavior by the characters. :)
Poltergeist 2 is definitely worth watching as well. It's got a similar feel to it and that character we all know is so darned creepy.
Classic 80s! The mindset of the 80s when you watch this is totally different. We have had so many horror flix that people's reaction to this kinda phenomena is totally different than that of people 30 years ago. Weird. I hope we get the sequel sometime too.

I love this film so much. A huge part of my childhood (albeit probably contributing to me thinking my weird Popeye wallpaper was moving!) It has a lovely gentle touch amid all the stress. A genuinely fully portrayed family, no vindictive people (just a jerk or two), and a nice sense at the end that vindication is sorted ... yet also a genuine nightmare to get through, regardless. I also very much adored the mum (and probably admired the dad) when I wasn't even quite a teenager!

When the Marvelous Mr. Movie Manager mentioned that his pet peeve in movies is when they make a big spread for breakfast, and everybody just grabs a bite of toast then leaves, I was in total agreement. Another one is when they are sitting at the table and just moving their food around on the plate, but never actually eating it.
Here's a suggested name for Matthew: "Celluloid Chef"

Great movie I saw it in the theaters with my family when I was 9 The whole family loved it.
You really should have Emily watch "They Live" John Carpenter Film that far too often gets overlooked. IMHO it is as good as "The Thing" (very different films) but the craftsmanship of each film is equal.
They Live has the best fight scene of any Americsan film-hands down. Other reactors have reviewed it. It still holds up.

THIS.. is one SERIOUSLY well made movie. Making believable characters and then put them in harms way.

Back in the day Poltergeist was THE movie to watch everytime it came on HBO and each time it did my friends and I, the next day in school, all asked each other "did you watch Poltergeist again last night". It was just all the rage in our elementary school cafeteria conversations.
I loved the last 15mins and
they thought the house was clean. It also leaves it open for part 2. Because it tells us it's not over and a part 2 is on the way.

The film really isn't about a poltergeist, If you pay attention to the films subtext, its actually about the TV. The evil presence in the house which takes Carrol Ann away from the family is the TV set, its the first thing you see in the film, and the last thing you see, when they kick a TV set out of the motel room.
The scene when the Father and the next door neighbour are arguing over the remote.
And when Carrol Ann says "Theyyyyre Heeere" the Mum asks her who did you mean and she replies "The TV people"
When you listen to the Tangina Monolog again with the realisation she is talking about the TV it really makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up on end.
" There's one more thing - a terrible presence is in there with her. So much rage, so much betrayal. I've never sensed anything like it. I don't know what hovers over this house, but it was strong enough to punch a hole into this world and take your daughter away from you. It keeps Carol Anne very close to it and away from the spectral light. IT LIES TO HER. It says things only a child can understand. He's been using her to restrain the others. To her, it simply is another child. To us, it is the Beast. Now let's go get your daughter."
Also if you look at the Poltergeist movie poster with Carrol Ann touching the TV set, Look at the tag line it reads "IT Knows what Scares YOU" its referring to those who own the media and the Hollywood productions they pass off as "News" A scared population is a compliant population !
Heather O'Rourke, aka Carol Ann, sadly passed away during the filming of part 3. Its all part of The Curse Of Poltergeist (look it up). They had to CGI in her likeness to complete the film. Heather O'Rourke is buried in a wall crypt at the Westwood Cemetery in Los Angeles. Many other celebrities are buried there. Its a very well hidden place right off Wilshire Blvd. Back in the day, we used to go burn one with Jim Backus, aka Mr Howell from Gilligan's Island. He is also buried there. We would leave candy or a flower with Heather O'Rourke. RIP to all the greats at the Westwood Cemetery.
Every night when programming ended around 1AM TV stations would actually sign off with the anthem before going to a test pattern, and then programming would start with Breakfast TV shows at 6AM. Many a night I've woken up to a test pattern.
Try one called The Entity. Another poltergeist themed flick from the early eighties. However THAT movie makes THIS one seem like an old Walt Disney movie by comparison (you'll find out what I'm talking about when you see it).
In defense of the last part of the movie, they believed they were fine for the moment and the house was clean, but it was never the house, but the land which we find out was full of bodies, like cleaning a wound without knowing about an infection, the whole neighborhood might of even be subjected to hauntings except for Carol Ann being the main target of the spirits, the only thing I would of changed would have the family stay in the living room or at least in the same room.
If this was real, I would hold onto the house and sell tickets.. because proof of the supernatural is worth a fortune.
The lawsuits from peoples missing family members would put a real kink in that.

This may sound strange, but I assumed a period of time (like months or weeks had passed) between getting Carol-anne back and moving day. I mean, it takes a while to sell your home, get boxes, find a new place. I thought the house was "clean" as Tangene said, but they just didn't want to live there anymore. I thought those last 15 mins was the most exciting part of the movie.
Saw this in theaters as double feature with Superman 3!!

Very clever, Dad! I don't think Mom got the inside joke about "Coach." Really obscure tangent, but it made me smile.
Around 1984 when I was 6 years old, my dad showed me this movie on good old vhs and it blew me away. My dad was cool that way. I could rent any movie I wanted.
I remember my dad when I a kid kept looking for a movie Dawn of the Dead. We looked for it for about 3-4 months and we finally got it around 10:00 p.m one night and watched it later that night I've seen that movie at least 300 times since!

Kitchen breakfast scenes in early '80s movies are nostalgic to me. This is one example (along with everything else like the toys in the bedroom), along with "Mr. Mom" and even one in "Jaws 3."
Beatrice Straight who played the paranormal expert in this, was also in "Network", which I highly recommend if you have not seen. She holds the record for shortest amount of screen time for an Academy Award-winning performance for her appearance in it.
The actress mam and dad in this and the Speilberg stuff. Just awesome.
It's widely accepted that Steven Spielberg really directed this.
I think she missed the part with the moving van and boxes being when they left the first house, and moved up onto the hill that the other guy had been talking about building new houses on.
The haunting traveled with them.

Ok. Noone has mentioned it yet as far as I've read ahead so I'll mention it: The talk around Hollywood was that this film series was cursed, beginning with the mysterious death of Heather O'Rourke, dying I'm her sleep from a rare disease she didn't even know she had. The girl that played Dana was strangled to death by a jealous boyfriend, the Indian in the sequel was stabbed to death outside of a nightclub. There were a number of other incidents involving the crew other the time they were filming. Craig T. Nelson said he couldn't bring himself to watch the movie if he was alone.
