@@dpatt6175 That's an odd thing to say, mate. Lighten up. The world is nicer if we are ready to be nice to one another and give compliments where due :)
10:32 is the moment after thirty-four years of playing guitar, that I finally figured out WHY a II-V-I chord progression works. Instead of viewing it as a box, it makes more sense as a straight line. I now have a better way to visualize the progression. This video just unlocked a whole new set of riffs/licks for me. Thank you, you wonderously beautiful man you.
Paul this was simply a joy to watch and absorb. Additionally the overlaid notation is absolutely next level!! Just beautiful. I haven't been playing all that long but there is something about jazz chord voicings that just make me sigh. Blessings from Australia.
This is why Paul is different from others in TH-cam, the way he creates his video is so wonderful and inspiring and makes me pick up my guitar to play and learn.
Every once in a while, I stumble across someone who changes my whole viewpoint… my first teacher, then Hendrix, then Slash, and now, Paul Davids. Thank you Paul.
some forty years ago I was hired to sit in as accompaniment for a jazz singer at a little bistro. I was reading charts I had never seen before that evening. I remember listening to the melody of My Funny Valentine for the first time as we played, it was so beautiful and I had no idea where it was going or what my chords would sound like next. I had to remind myself to pay attention to what i was doing and not screw this up by listening too much. But it was so engaging creating the music in a live performance setting while listening to it as all new.
When Paul Davids started playing My Funny Valentine, immediately an old classic black and white movie popped up in my head with soft rain falling in the background as the Man smokes a cigar looks at a beautiful woman walking past him. Paul Davids has the power of making any song sound beautiful
Mate thank you Paul you don't know what your music means to me I just love your way of playing and it's inspired me to play. Thanks Paul. Your music is so beautiful.
I struggle with anger. It shifts my attitude toward the negative, a constant radiation of heat from my core. But then I sat for a while with an old friend on a computer screen and the two of us admired how beautiful a song can be. I enjoyed the sway of that old, classic sound that blues seems to make, older than the instrument he played. Older than either of us. It was truly romantic, the way it reminded me of my beautiful girl, but also of love itself. It was as if I was playing the role of every star-crossed lover at once beneath the soothing tones of steel strings. And i wasn't angry anymore. Thankyou for that.
Paul, your content is always fantastic, but you should know that your ES-335 sounds simply wonderful, especially with the subtle tremolo effect. I'm mesmerized.
I loved this song for years, when all I could play on guitar was wild thing. Thank you, Paul and all the other on line guitar teachers for making my dreams come true and giving me the knowledge to play this masterpiece. 💖
thank you Paul. I am starting to play again after recovery from a painful thumb problem and it may be that your next level playing course is just what I need to bring some focus and inspiration to my return to making music again ...
How great it is that my favourite TH-camr calls my favourite jazz standard „The Prettiest Love Song“? Have been playing it for years mostly on an archtop and definitely like the bluesy crunch that fits so well to your beautiful arrangement. Chapeau!
Well done, Mr. Davids. Thank you 🙏 I can't say it's not a beautiful song. Your breakdown and insight is articulate and gives me a new appreciation for the song. My first encounter with "My Funny Valentine" was in the early 80s when I sang bass in the junior high vocal jazz ensemble. It was a popular number back then. It seemed that every vocal jazz ensemble sang it at every competition that year, and we rehearsed it ad infinitum, ad nauseum. I grew to loathe the song... Thank you for allowing me to appreciate its complexity and beauty once again.
Thanks a lot, Paul, for beautifully featuring this beloved song! Can't wait to practice your chord-melody... One more LINE I'd like to add: beginning with the two-bar "staaaaaaay" in what I believe is 27th bar I play decending chords Cm11, B7(#11), Bbm11, Bb7(#11) to AbM7. This is extra beautiful as the singing voice "stays" for two whole bars, before coming to the conclusion that "each day is Valentine's Day". Just love it!
Played this song on trumpet many times, but after this I feel the urge to give my guitar skills a try in another genre, man, all these beautiful chords... Thanks Paul
Every time I see your videos and lessons, it inspires me to involve deeply into the music and forget everything else. Just me, guitar and the music. The way you explain makes it so easier to understand the music theory 😌😇✌🏼
A Most beautiful love song it is! A haunting combo of collaboration of lyrics and notes that is giving us a very personal view inside the relationship between the writers , Rodgers and Hart. At least, that’s the way it seems to me.
Got inspired, wanted to surprise my wife for Valentine‘s day, had 2hrs of time, still in the first bar :-). However, this is one to aspire to in the future. How well phrased it is, how nicely seemingly obvious chord choices get substituted or embellished, what a masterpiece. Fantastic video Paul!
I've really enjoyed learning so many things from you Paul!👊 You have a way of explaining things to us that just makes good sense. Ty my friend, and it is a beautiful song. Great one to practice chord changing on.
Let’s say it again: an intense and tasty content, a visible joy to teach sophisticated music in a most accessible way, a playful, admirably useful editing…Paul is making on line teaching an uplifting delight. Many blessings from France!
Paul, just watched this video and it put me in mind of a person that I think you should listen to,it Alice Fredenham from Britain's Got Talent 2013, her voice is pure gold
I actually performed this song in high schools jazz band. Played the trombone part however. Song gives me chills everytime I hear it. Great video as always :)
@Paul Davids, I keep coming back to this video! Amazing what you did here! The whole production is amazing! Could you share how you added the chords into the video, like @3:13 for example? Thank you! God bless!
Paul..... I love your edits and respect with envy your talent combined with a drive to share the joy of guitar. I think I will be subscribing to your courses soon to learn, be driven and to have a friend on my journey. Well done Paul and a bigger thank you.
That sounds great. Very insightful to someone like myself who doesn't really do the Jazz thing. It's cool to watch you work it out. I'm a little rusty with my sheet music sight reading haha, tabs are ruining me.
Dear Mr. Davis, I love your style man! This song is very Reminiscent of a Julie London song “Cry Me a River”. I’d love to hear your take and tutorial on her song. The Aerosmith version is pretty good too! LOL! Thank you so much for the beautiful work you do!
I have so many questions 1. What difference between jazz and blues 2.what is tonic note or chord 3. how to make chord progression perfectly 4. how to memorize nots on frets 5.why jazz have so different sounds .....
DAMN YOU PAUL! My Funny Valentine is my favorite love song and now anytime I'll bring it up people will go "Oh yeah, so you also saw that video from Paul?"
Humour, storytelling, cinematography, excellent guitar, editing prowess, teaching skill - Excellent in all regards :)
Give him a handy why don't ya

Heck yeah John! Glad he was able to do that for you that’s awesome

Love the Chet Baker version. I can almost hear him singing... he's the reason why I listen to jazz.
same!!! :,)
the almost hearing him comment struck my heart

This one of my favorites of all time. “ The fabulous Baker boys” and Elvis Costello do great versions as well. Thank you, Sir!
I was just about to recommend the Elvis Costello version.
Are we talking about the version he sings on Marian McPartland’s “Piano Jazz” radio show, because it is brilliant.
My favorites are Misty and My little suede shoes, they are so fun to play!
