  • Were close to a Civil War situation in Myanmar, also known as Burma. Various factions within the country struggle for power while outside major world powers try a hand at influencing the outcome in their favor. The outcome of this military coup against the democratically elected government has some major stakes for the United States, Russia and China.

They were granted independence, but it was led by the majority Buddhists rather than majority Muslims.
What Britain did to Burma is almost the opposite of what they did to India; rather than partition land between religion as seen with India, they created only one country to be led by one government.
Britain gets shit for both; they can't win. Honestly, Both countries probably would've fared better if they were granted independence later around 1980-90, so they werent thrown to the wolves that is self-governance. Here's a shit metaphor; Britain let their teenagers leave the house when they hadn't finished school -- they weren't prepared for that independence.

@@arakami8547 Just don't be there to start with but Britain wanted control over the trade routes. Besides by that point in history, the British Empire was on its waning days. They couldn't quite maintain control of all these areas. Granting independence later isn't a real option. There's also a rise in nationalism in the region which wanted independence. After the Japanese dislodge the powers that be, you either grant them independence or have it end up like France and Vietnam. It's not really Britain's responsibility for what happens after these countries are granted independence though. There's also not much you can do against hyper-partisan religious extremist.

Empires don't give a flying shit about their subjects, the british empire is responsible directly or indirectly for the deaths of millions of indians.
The British let India go because they couldn't keep it, not because of the goodness of their hearts.
If Britain kept india they would stiLl exploit their population.

Hi Cappy (and anyone else looking for extra context), may I humbly try to grossly oversimplify some history?
    - What today is referred to as the Rohingya conflict goes a lot further back than most people realise - troops chasing "refugees" from that region into Assam in 1821 was one of the triggers for the first Anglo-Burmese War.
    - It wasn't clear from the video but the Rohingya aren't the only minority group in conflict with the national army; paramilitary organisations claiming to represent the Chin, Kachin, Shan, Karen, Wa and others (often more than one each) have all been in conflict with the central government at various points, not to mention communist insurgents.
    - WWII made interethnic relations pretty complicated, the (largely Christian) northern groups supported British, American and Chinese forces while many of the (largely Buddhist) Bamar majority and Karen initially sided with the Japanese. They soon turned against them but all the while keeping the returning British at arms length. Aung San Suu Kyi ("chi")'s father, Gen. Aung San, was a key player in both the resistance and wartime government's diplomacy.
    - After the war, on top of the divisions above, the Karen voted for independence from the rest of Myanmar. Aung San tried to unite the army and communist factions in the first post-independence election but the opposition boycotted the vote and when Aung San's AFPFL won a large majority, he and most his cabinet were assassinated before inauguration. U Nu succeeded him but the country gradually fell into widespread civil war and the army were invited to power for two years in 1958 and then seized it in 1962.
    - Between the 1988 Uprising and the 2010 elections the military diversified a lot of it's power through former military or military-linked businessmen and politicians in preparation for democracy. They also wrote a constitution that needed 75%+1 majority to change then guaranteed 25% of the national assembly to active military officers, so they could undermine the NLD government and have them take the blame for all the problems they inherited from the Tatmadaw. I suspect it was planned as a 10 year character assassination of Aung San Suu Kyi, though clearly they didn't account for a decade of less-filtered internet access and political speech that seems to be fuelling the current backlash.
    - If you have an appetite for further reading, Bertil Lintner is a phenomenal authority on the subject.
TLDR - sadly, it's not a new conflict. It's an extremely complex (and overlooked) county that has been simmering for decades.
Your bit about the views of average soldiers is an interesting point. When I was there in 2010 (months before the election) I was surprised about how openly racist some of the Bamar majority were towards minorities in other parts of the county, perhaps 60 years of the army controlling state media has influenced some opinions. I am NOT saying everyone I met was racist, just that those few who were felt no need to hide it.

This is an excellent source of information directly from Myanmar with free online articles.
Copy-pasted from their Frontier Fridays newsletter www.frontiermyanmar.net/en/
"There have been a series of shootouts between members of Myanmar security forces in recent days, although the motives are not known. The latest incident saw a major shoot a captain following a drunken dispute in Meiktila, putting him in the hospital. Residents say the captain had recently killed a doctor and was responsible for the arrest of election officials, but it is not clear what triggered the altercation. Police and soldiers also reportedly fired at each other in Hakha, Chin State, and Kawkareik, Kayin State, this weekend, leaving two soldiers dead in Hakha and a policeman dead in Kawkareik, among other injuries. Details on what triggered those disputes remain scarce, but given recent high-profile military defections, the junta won’t be pleased with these very public breakdowns of unity within its ranks."

Hey man, you got some point of it right but there are lot more details of it. There are different ethnic cultures in Myanmar who want their own independence.. they still have civil war against Myanmar Military right now as we speak. Since World war 2... Different ethnic groups was with British army who was once promise them independent land after the war.. I am “Karen” that’s something you may never heard of. we as Karen Fighting and defending our land for freedom since World War 2, we still fighting for our freedom... I would recommend you to do few more of research about different ethnic group fighting for their freedom right now in Myanmar.. thank you for your time.. I hope you take this seriously and make another video of it.. We need to stay together to put away Myanmar Military.

Thank you for covering on this issue. Myanmar have been at civil war for 70 years. The British promised independence to the ethnic groups in the country of 12+ ethnicity and 100+ different spoken languages under one group who refused to acknowledge the others. There was a ceasefire agreement for the past few year but now the the military took over the fighting have started again. The burmese military is also targeting civilian villages.

One thing to remember is that the democratically elected president who was ousted in the coup was also criticised internationally for not doing enough to stop the persecution of the Rohingya by the military. And the main reason why the military is disliked is because they have been quite corrupt, in addition to their heavy handed oppression of the muslim minority.
Really, one could see this as being a 3 sided conflict. On the one hand, you have the Rohingya minority fighting for independence. On the other hand, you have the military junta trying to maintain their grip on power. And on the gripping hand, you have the civilian Buddhist majority who want a more accountable democratic government.

Hey! I've been watching your videos for quite a few days. I'm from Myanmar and still living in Myanmar. Politics in Myanmar has always been under the military's power so it's really complicated. The rebel groups are groups defending their people and land from the burmese military. Ever since NLD has won the elections, the civilian government only had power over education, electricity and a few other sectors. The military has always been in power over defense and the most important of all, the constitution. The civil war has been going on for 70+ years now, it's just going to become bigger. The protests broke out because people didn't want to live under the military anymore. Lots of people have been brainwashed since the 1960s. The rohingyan crisis is another complicated thing where both ARSA and the tatmadaw have committed war crimes, but of course the tatmadaw did it on a larger scale. At first, the protests were to release the detained leaders and restore democracy, but now after more than innocent 700 protesters being killed and airstrikes and heavy artillery on villages, the main goal now is to obtain federal democracy, where all citizens including rohingyas will have their own rights.
