I just purchased the 22’ Z71 Tahoe and so far, I couldn’t be happier. Went with the 5.3 instead of the 6.2. For what I feel isn’t a huge difference, the extra $10k up front plus the added fuel cost for the next 8-10 years doesn’t warrant the larger engine. I’m using it for kids and road trips. Also, I haven’t seen a more eye catching 3 row SUV than the Z71. Somehow looks mean but classy.
Totally agree - Nice looking exterior and interior as well as very comfortable. Torque and HP performance of the 5.3L is becoming somewhat outdated. But the main reason that I am scratching my head is the fact that you had this Z71 for a week and did not try or mention anything about its off road capabilities, its rear differential and 4X4 vs. its main rivals nor actually hook up a 5000-7000 Ib. Trailer and actually tow it up and down a hill or two. Lots of people have done performance tests on the 6.2L but no one has really put the 5.3L base engine in the Tahoe to a true towing test to see how it really performs.
"Sport mode toggle" - loling at a nearly 3 ton SUV with a sport mode. The "can carry a 4x8 sheet" caught my interest. The wife's dream vehicle would be a Yukon with a few choice options. (nothing fancy) All I've really got to have is 4x4 and the tow package - not that I want to tow, I want the beefier components from the tow package.
Test drove a denali not too long ago, impressive piece, however like you said, I felt my 18 expy felt more lithe and lighter than the denali. Test drove a navigator afterwards, and wifey said she liked it amd expy over the denali

Alex, I have the premier suburban with the magnetic suspension, however, no air suspension. Does the air suspension make a difference on the ride or is it just to lift it up and down? I love how comfortable the suspension is on my suburban . I went from a 2021 GLS to the suburban and it doesn’t feel like a downgrade.

I'd love love love if there was some kind of scale on your size chart. showing the Tahoe compared to the explorer, it seems Tahoe is 50% larger which I know is not the case but gives me no context. I'd love if there was something like 130" to 180" or something to reference are they actually 2 inches apart or 15 inches apart in exterior size? Cheers Alex!
Do these new tahoes still suffer from lifter failures? I ask this as I owned one for 9 years from new back in 2013 and in the 160000 miles i had it, the lifters collapsed twice . This truck is a house of cards if it still has that AFM/DOD system. Sad GM wont so anything about this issue, so I stayed away from it and bought a faster Ford with a much much longer manufacturer warranty and service package for 5 years. P.S. - I live in the Middle East :-)
The new shifter replacing the wheel mounted one is hilariously unnecessary. Not having ventilated seats available in this trim is also ridiculous. The smaller 5.3 being the only gas option on nearly every trim is also tough to accept with how high the price point is. It's very nice otherwise.
It has a limited slip diff. Unfortunately the only test of the Tahoe off road was a very preproduction model not equipped with the LSD at all (TFL). So I'm curious as to how it performs off road or on slippery boat ramps. An excellent E-LSD is available on the Yukon AT4 and Denali; it will be on the Tahoe and Suburban soon. TFL tested it and it worked very, very well - better than the G80.
Actually now that I looked at it more closely, it looks like the Tahoe might have the G80, which works like a locker but can be abrupt in its automatic engagement. Chevy's website calls it an LSD, and it's standard on all 4x4 models. Maybe Alex can clear this up for us or test it.
v8’s are gonna go in like 10 years due to the cylinder deactivation.... if you somehow override the crylidner deactivation stuff this should be bulletproof
Alex, I wish you can add the luxury crossover/suvs in your length comparison as well. I understand you're comparing classes but some of us also consider smaller luxury SUVs for the money they're charging for these new redesigned, non-luxury SUVs.
I'd rather have a V8 than Ford's turbo V6. The 8 will be more reliable and less troublesome down the road. Also easier to work on and modify. Nothing beats the rumble of a V8.

Hey Alex really love your interior seat comparisons and how you have built a great library for us to compare vehicles. I am looking at this (diesel) or get a 2017/18 Lexus LX570, what would you buy? For context we use this for roadtrips, winter roads over mountains and would like to decrease our carbon footprint (if at all possible). We love the quality and comfort of Lexus just wish it was a hybrid.
Alex keep in mind heavier rigs no matter the motor will have worse economy around town because it take power to move weight. The more heavy something is the more power it takes to move. If you want good gas mileage and less capability then buy a crossover. Capability comes at a cost in weight and economy. I understand that seems horrible mileage compared to a car but it is great compared to my wife's 07 Yukon xl Denali that only gets 12 on a good day around town. The complaint is warranted but facts should be provided that explain why the mileage is worse. Like because of this, this is affected but you get this capability instead of better mileage.
I like the new front end of the Chevy trucks and the Tahoe, but I wish they would ditch the glossy black plastic. The amount of it makes what would be a nice grill look really cheap.
I watched your intro to the new Tahoe some 4 months ago and now this more recent review and ihaven't heard you talk/mention that slot on the dash to the left of the steering wheel and besides the buttons for the safety systems. Agreed. I've been driving for 48 years now, used every type of shifter that was available, from manual on the floor and on the column, automatics on the floor and column, push button automatics (first one I drove was a Rambler, lol). I now have a 2020 Explorer ST with the big knob shifter and honestly wasn't crazy about it at first, but now I love it. I never have to look at it, has a very intuitive feel.
No, even though it is on older design, the Toyota Sequoia is probably a better idea if you want to buy. With the kind of aftermarket options we have nowadays for audio, I see no reason to buy a soon-to-be junker.
GM's stupid 140 MPH speedo. My Chevy Cruze RS also had one. Because of wind drag, this vehicle will never hit 140. Also, due to tire speed ratings, the engine computer will perform a fuel cutoff in the high 120's. So if the vehicle cannot ever achieve 140, why have a speedo that reads that high?

I take a degree of issue with your argument relating to the Toyota vs. the Tahoe in terms of reliability. I have never owned a Toyota product (and unless Toyota makes a rear-drive van or other vehicle with at least 41” of second row headroom with a very upright seat with 35.8” of rear legroom as found in the MB Metris, I probably never will), and my only GM product was a GMC T6500 with a caterpillar diesel that cost me more money to repair in a year of ownership than any two years of any other car I’ve owned. But the issue I take with it is that reliability is highly variable- partially because the definition of ‘reliability’ is not entirely clear. I consider Mercedes vehicles extremely reliable, because except for three failed batteries, two of which were in cars that were driven at most weekly, I have only had a trip failure (unable to get out of the house and to the destination of my choosing) twice in 19 years of Mercedes-Benz ownership, mostly of cars that were at least ten years old- and up to 30, although I drive a newish one now (bought it new, now in the fifth year of ownership). That was a blown ball joint I should have dealt with long before, and a failed crankshaft position sensor that really is the only instance I would call a “reliability problem.” That is not to say that I have not written an almost unspeakable number of large checks to my Mercedes dealership for both maintenance and repairs of items that as far as I understand are practically never issues on Toyotas with less than a quarter of a million miles on it (although two of the cars I owned had more than double that on them). I would not argue even vaguely that Mercedes are maintenance intensive or bloody expensive to own. However, I think that I *relied on*, without worry, these vehicles for getting me to where I am going with just three total failures in 19 years, on very old and very high mileage cars, and I trusted them completely. They are therefore, to me, RELIABLE. The cost of maintaining them is part of the ticket of owning a Mercedes, or any other German car really, and it is a valid metric for judging a car, but I would distinctly say that it is a separate metric than the vehicles reliability. As long as the vehicle informs you with reasonable clarity that something is wrong (or lasts until the next scheduled maintenance), and makes it to the dealership for repair at your convenience, the concept of reliability is present. My big problem with the GMC T6500 wasn’t that I poured so much money into it (I mean it was an issue); its that the vehicle failed to start four times in a year, failed to reach its destination another 3 due to on the move failures, and that brakes on the vehicle failed twice as I approached my destination. I could not rely on that vehicle to do the haulage work I purchased it for; I was a flea marketeer at the time, and it cost me over $35,000 in revenue due to not being able to get to the market and set up a total of 13 days in that year (between the day of the breakdown and the following day as I transferred my merchandise to a rental truck), beyond the $12,000 I spent on repairs on it, and $4000 on rental trucks. That is unreliable because I can’t rely on it. The money I would spend fixing a Tahoe would likely pale in comparison to the amount of money I would lose due to not being able to go to work, upsetting my clientele, and since Chevy doesn’t do loaner vehicles, acquiring an adequate vehicle to engage in my work while they fix the thing. I don’t know if a Toyota would end up being cheaper; that would also depend on how many years and miles it could reliably be in service and allow me to amortize the costs of acquisition and depreciation- I drive things until repairing them is no longer actually possible or the car is so worn out it becomes unpleasant to drive. I tend to suspect, however, that the additional cost of fuel would not quite cover the costs incurred in the Tahoe from higher depreciation, larger repairs, out of service costs, and what I tend to suspect would be a substantially shorter service life; the average service life of cars on the road is usually more defined by the kind of people who buy them than the build quality of cars, so statistics are not always indicative of that reality when being driven by a miser like me.
Most of their RnD budget for powertrain went into the 10 speed, DFM and the diesel That little slot would make a great pocket for an easypass if youre in an area someone would break into your car for it. The regular consoles are shared between the silverado and tahoe, this one had the sliding center console (which is the dumbest thing ever and should just go away)
What R&D budget? The diesel is in their half-tons, the DFM came from Delphi, and the 10-speed was split with Ford. GM doesn't do anything innovative anymore. They're miserly when it comes to product innovation.

Driving a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup, with V8 engine. One of the most unrefined transmissions I have even driven, felt every bump on the road, it growls and grinds like the transmission is going to fall off and thr mileage for city driving with 30% hwy combined is 22.7L/100kms which is awful. Now I can assume how their other products are especially this SUV.
Why would they constantly place the 4 wheel drive selector on the opposite side as the gear selector??? And to make it more confusing the make it the same style knob as the headlights? #$%^&
As Alex said, GM made a vehicle with plenty of strong suits, but it also has significant flaws The interior room is great, but the interior parts and design, like the Silverado are a let down, at these prices And the power just isn't there, easily beaten by old designs like the Armada and Sequioa GM got greedy, and wants to force you to spend $70k for the 6.2L. The right move is to make it optional here

The Sequoia and Armada drive horrible. The engines also seem gutless and crude. They should have been redesigned years ago. For 75K you can get a GLS 450 which is an overwhelmingly better vehicle in every dimension. Plus, you can get a big shiny star on the grill if that's important for your ego.
The 3 Liter Diesel in the GMC Sierra truck delivers 25 MPG. The frame is the same. I do not see any reason to buy a gasoline gas guzzler any time soon.
@@mountainhobo That kind of new Diesel last hundreds of thousands of miles with no issues. It requires timely oil change and oil filter change. That is not a big 6.7 Liters but 3 Liters. Those work worldwide for decades. GM just recently brought them to US market. Those are resisting in harsh environments as in South America, Africa, Asia, Australia but also used in Europe. The hype about electrification started to hurt their sales overseas in Europe but not them being unreliable. Those are not the notorious poor quality GM Diesels from 80-ties sold in the USA.
So diesel at $5.35 per gallon right now, getting 25mpg would cost $22 per 100 miles. 5.3 at 20mpg at $3.25 per gallon would cost $16.25 per 100 miles. No DEF or injector servicing to worry about. I’ll take the gasser.

Maybe hes considering all engine options when grading mpgs. The duramax averaging mpgs of mid to upper 20s is outstanding.

50% is a conservative estimate. Probably closer to 60%. GM dominates that market, and for good reason.

the Z71 needs the 6.2, 5.3 doesn't quite cut it with how big that suv is.
I imagine it's like the Silverado in that the 6.2L will migrate to the lower and mid trim levels after a model year or two.

Look for the G80 RPO code when shopping.
Tahoe Z71s are not equipped with the G80, unfortunately. I think that is a miss on Chevys part. Maybe they assume buyers won't really go deep offroad.

Agreed. I've been driving for 48 years now, used every type of shifter that was available, from manual on the floor and on the column, automatics on the floor and column, push button automatics (first one I drove was a Rambler, lol). I now have a 2020 Explorer ST with the big knob shifter and honestly wasn't crazy about it at first, but now I love it. I never have to look at it, has a very intuitive feel.
I was surprised that Ford and GM are designing transmissions together now.
Anyone think this is ok compared to the denali?..

No, even though it is on older design, the Toyota Sequoia is probably a better idea if you want to buy. With the kind of aftermarket options we have nowadays for audio, I see no reason to buy a soon-to-be junker.
My Tahoe still runs great and it’s 21 years old

GM's stupid 140 MPH speedo. My Chevy Cruze RS also had one. Because of wind drag, this vehicle will never hit 140. Also, due to tire speed ratings, the engine computer will perform a fuel cutoff in the high 120's. So if the vehicle cannot ever achieve 140, why have a speedo that reads that high?
That goes for every vehicle there all limited to 120s even though the speedo will be at 160 or 140 mph
@@dfhhtyu3434 Agreed. It's just the craziest thing. All manufacturers need to stop this. If the fuel cutoff is 125, the speedo should never read higher than that. Same if speed is limited either by engine/motor capability or by aero drag or by tire speed ratings. Enough!

I have a 2017 Tahoe
I take a degree of issue with your argument relating to the Toyota vs. the Tahoe in terms of reliability. I have never owned a Toyota product (and unless Toyota makes a rear-drive van or other vehicle with at least 41” of second row headroom with a very upright seat with 35.8” of rear legroom as found in the MB Metris, I probably never will), and my only GM product was a GMC T6500 with a caterpillar diesel that cost me more money to repair in a year of ownership than any two years of any other car I’ve owned.
But the issue I take with it is that reliability is highly variable- partially because the definition of ‘reliability’ is not entirely clear. I consider Mercedes vehicles extremely reliable, because except for three failed batteries, two of which were in cars that were driven at most weekly, I have only had a trip failure (unable to get out of the house and to the destination of my choosing) twice in 19 years of Mercedes-Benz ownership, mostly of cars that were at least ten years old- and up to 30, although I drive a newish one now (bought it new, now in the fifth year of ownership). That was a blown ball joint I should have dealt with long before, and a failed crankshaft position sensor that really is the only instance I would call a “reliability problem.” That is not to say that I have not written an almost unspeakable number of large checks to my Mercedes dealership for both maintenance and repairs of items that as far as I understand are practically never issues on Toyotas with less than a quarter of a million miles on it (although two of the cars I owned had more than double that on them). I would not argue even vaguely that Mercedes are maintenance intensive or bloody expensive to own.
However, I think that I *relied on*, without worry, these vehicles for getting me to where I am going with just three total failures in 19 years, on very old and very high mileage cars, and I trusted them completely. They are therefore, to me, RELIABLE. The cost of maintaining them is part of the ticket of owning a Mercedes, or any other German car really, and it is a valid metric for judging a car, but I would distinctly say that it is a separate metric than the vehicles reliability. As long as the vehicle informs you with reasonable clarity that something is wrong (or lasts until the next scheduled maintenance), and makes it to the dealership for repair at your convenience, the concept of reliability is present.
My big problem with the GMC T6500 wasn’t that I poured so much money into it (I mean it was an issue); its that the vehicle failed to start four times in a year, failed to reach its destination another 3 due to on the move failures, and that brakes on the vehicle failed twice as I approached my destination. I could not rely on that vehicle to do the haulage work I purchased it for; I was a flea marketeer at the time, and it cost me over $35,000 in revenue due to not being able to get to the market and set up a total of 13 days in that year (between the day of the breakdown and the following day as I transferred my merchandise to a rental truck), beyond the $12,000 I spent on repairs on it, and $4000 on rental trucks. That is unreliable because I can’t rely on it.
The money I would spend fixing a Tahoe would likely pale in comparison to the amount of money I would lose due to not being able to go to work, upsetting my clientele, and since Chevy doesn’t do loaner vehicles, acquiring an adequate vehicle to engage in my work while they fix the thing. I don’t know if a Toyota would end up being cheaper; that would also depend on how many years and miles it could reliably be in service and allow me to amortize the costs of acquisition and depreciation- I drive things until repairing them is no longer actually possible or the car is so worn out it becomes unpleasant to drive. I tend to suspect, however, that the additional cost of fuel would not quite cover the costs incurred in the Tahoe from higher depreciation, larger repairs, out of service costs, and what I tend to suspect would be a substantially shorter service life; the average service life of cars on the road is usually more defined by the kind of people who buy them than the build quality of cars, so statistics are not always indicative of that reality when being driven by a miser like me.
I have owned a 2007 tahoe to this with 293k mile never let me down. I only do regular maintenance

The regular consoles are shared between the silverado and tahoe, this one had the sliding center console (which is the dumbest thing ever and should just go away)

What R&D budget? The diesel is in their half-tons, the DFM came from Delphi, and the 10-speed was split with Ford. GM doesn't do anything innovative anymore. They're miserly when it comes to product innovation.

Driving a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup, with V8 engine. One of the most unrefined transmissions I have even driven, felt every bump on the road, it growls and grinds like the transmission is going to fall off and thr mileage for city driving with 30% hwy combined is 22.7L/100kms which is awful. Now I can assume how their other products are especially this SUV.

As Alex said, GM made a vehicle with plenty of strong suits, but it also has significant flaws
The interior room is great, but the interior parts and design, like the Silverado are a let down, at these prices
And the power just isn't there, easily beaten by old designs like the Armada and Sequioa
GM got greedy, and wants to force you to spend $70k for the 6.2L. The right move is to make it optional here

Tahoe/Yukons are usually very reliable. I think that is part of the reason they own 65% of the market.
My 99 still runs great. The government buys them, I’d say they last a while.

GM sold 70% of the large volume in Q4 2020. Toyota's Sequoia was probably in the single digits and decline from previous month/year.

The Sequoia and Armada drive horrible. The engines also seem gutless and crude. They should have been redesigned years ago. For 75K you can get a GLS 450 which is an overwhelmingly better vehicle in every dimension. Plus, you can get a big shiny star on the grill if that's important for your ego.
@@Word-Life I rented a 2019 Nissan Armada on my Portland OR trip. The ride and handling was horrible. Compared to the Tahoe I rented in 2018.

The 4R is the perfect size too and it’s maneuverable. It’s getting a redesign in late 2022.
The 3 Liter Diesel in the GMC Sierra truck delivers 25 MPG. The frame is the same. I do not see any reason to buy a gasoline gas guzzler any time soon.
Maintanance cost? Diesels are expensive to repair anything.
@@mountainhobo That kind of new Diesel last hundreds of thousands of miles with no issues. It requires timely oil change and oil filter change. That is not a big 6.7 Liters but 3 Liters. Those work worldwide for decades. GM just recently brought them to US market. Those are resisting in harsh environments as in South America, Africa, Asia, Australia but also used in Europe. The hype about electrification started to hurt their sales overseas in Europe but not them being unreliable. Those are not the notorious poor quality GM Diesels from 80-ties sold in the USA.

5.3 at 20mpg at $3.25 per gallon would cost $16.25 per 100 miles. No DEF or injector servicing to worry about. I’ll take the gasser.
The 2025 Tahoe Z71 will have the diesel option, so fuel economy just got better!
