- Free weights vs machines, which is best for increasing size and strength?
In a recent 2021 review, it was concluded that there was NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE between them for increasing muscle size (PMID: 34609100)! However, using machines increased strength on machines the most whereas using free weights increased strength on free weights the most.
This means that if you’re trying to increase your bench or squat, then it’s best to stick with free weights.
If you’re just concerned with putting on muscle, then machines can be just as good as free weights.
The only downside is that machines involve less of your important shoulder, core, and hip stabilizer muscles so make sure to train those separately.

The combination of both is the Best by far.
I also make sure to incorporate body weight exercises in each of my gym days.
Source?
@@jobhuisman6350 your home's toilet
@@jobhuisman6350Why do u need a source for common sense? If both have pros & cons then both will be optimal to neutralize the cons like machines not working your stabilizers. If u do BOTH u will have strong stabilizers lol
This channel is top tier!
Honestly, after training for 10 years. Fuck barbells.
Why
interesting comment, why though?
I think because Machine workouts can maximize the Gains on the muscle group you are targeting. Machines work the ROM for you
While on Barbells, the ROM will depend on you. Your wrist strength will also limit your max bench if you're going heavy.
Also with Machines, injuries are less prone since you won't have to worry about the bar falling on your chest if you failed a rep.
@@mobilelegendsmemes bingo!!
@@mobilelegendsmemesdo you believe that combining overhead presses with machine chest press would hit the stabilization muscles sufficiently? I have some limiting factors when benching which means that my chest can handle more weight than my frame allows comfortably.
Do both. Get the best from both worlds.
For long run in regular fitness use machines because u r safe , no injuries fear, no lower back issues, equally build strength and muscle
I prefer free weights personally for mind muscle connection, but I don't really use barbells that much because of fear of spine related strain and injuries. I use a lot of dumbell exercises instead, so I do dumbell presses instead or use a band or cable for chest exercises, for example. I limit squats because I have bad feet, so I use bands and cables for legs as well.
Honestly only reason I use machines is because of mobility or preventing injuries/improving recovery. Like not even 10 percent of my training is on machines.
I like a mix of both!
Just use both depending on which you prefer for a given exercise
I've been doing machine my whole life realized how weak my core was till I picked up a kettle bell
Both have strengths and weaknesses, use a mix if you want 🤷🏻♂️
The answer for me is which ever is available at the gym, if you go during peak times you get what’s available, they both will work when paired with the right nutrition. However there is more muscle gained from free weights nor safety and control from machines. I think as long as you’re making gains it’s all good and living a healthy life.
Machines are just safer,, that's why Dexter Jackson and Charles Glass prefers Machines over Free Weights
This is good video, but I would like a more
in-depth video on this topic, please
Im sure jeff nippard has just the video for you
I do both but mostly Machines . Monday and tuesdays free weights the rest of the week machined
Free weights are great for knowing what numbers you can hit, machines are better for customizing how you want to generate the most force and creating the best angle of torque while still being able to progressively overload
Machines for failure sets/max effort growth
There is a important aspect with machine which eventually will help you more, and that is not having fear of weights falling on you. If there is no fear you will stick to the relatively heavier weights and will even go for that all out last 1-2 reps which with free weights might become too risky and most will avoid.
thanks
If you are doing standing cable exercises you are working plenty of stabilizer muscles. Try doing a 1 arm standing cable row or press with supporting your opposite arm on anything and maintain proper posture and you will understand what I mean….
What are finishing exercises? I thought those were the ones where you need to rely on machines because you're closer to failure due to free weights
Just use both! :)
Like a bisexual
Thats why dips are good if you only have access to machines
I tend to revert to machine for a week or two when i increase dumbells but dont feel too steady with the weight
Like i went from 3x12 on 24s, to 26s all fine but once i got to 3x12 at 26 and bumped up to 28s i just kept feeling like my arms were at on rhe verge of collapsing inwards and dropping weights on my face so went to machine for a couple weeks to up my strength safely until i could get to like 10,8,6 on 28s. I feel like dumbells also work stabalising muscles and help against imbalances so theyre mg preference
I mix both
Depends if your using garbage machines like technogym or matrix then free weights If your using Hammer strength, cybex, gym 80 then they go hand in hand and i would say they are the same maybe a tad better with these high end machines
Machines for hypertrophy and free weights for strength
Both
Machine -> safer...
Safety first..
my wrist got fucked so mchine on top for me
I use the cables for it I guess
It just be shoulder is what I'm concerned about
I consider machines a "supplement" to free weights. Sometimes at the end of the workout I feel like I just cant continue with free weights because im going too low and I'd get a better bump out of a machine then I'd turn to the machine
I think u r noob in fitness
Yeah free wights evolve more muscles while machines focus on less.
Sometimes that's a bad thing. Isolating certain muscles can be better
What????
On the machine you can fully focus yourself on the weight and progress.
For the dumbbells on the other hand you have to focus on your performance, the motion itself, you have to stabilize etc. which costs not only strength but very much attention while on the machine you just press or pull or whatever. That's it.
So for beginners for example it's easier to go on the machine's because then they can fully focus on the weight itself.
I am 8 years lifter, now i threw all my barbell benches away and fully switched to machine and dumbell , now i am having fitness with safety
@@IronChicken999 my boi. The machines. Focus on less muscles. That means that they target fewer muscle groups isolating muscles like you lat, triceps, biceps etc. If you want to target a certain area its better to use a machine. Isolating muscles groups makes them work harder.
The machines take out your stabilizer muscles which are needed for free weights.
So yeah free weights involve more muscles, while machines focus on less.
Dude just say balance this approach
using machines increase strength on machines the most asdasfasfafaffsdaetgsgs asfsdfsdfsd... i dont understand what your saying...
All i can say is.. gay people use machines more often than the big boyz doing free weights
How do you know who is gay...did u ask them out lol
