Steve Rothery is one of the best guitarists in the world!. There are not many players who make the guitar sing with emotion. Just listen to his guitar solos on any of Marillions songs.
The first band I ever got into was Marillion. I was obsessed for decades. Just after that it was also Pink Floyd. (Hi Dave.) All this time I was having guitar lessons. While this music is clearly wonderful, have you _any_ idea how crippling it is to be constantly confronting perfection while trying to learn a skill for yourself? Without even realizing that what you are listening to is the very best there is? Sure; we all sort-of think that we listen to the best stuff out there; that's why we listen, right? But I thank all of you who comment about just how good Steve is. Because it makes me feel slightly less bad about being so $#!@. ;)
Great to see Steve Rothery getting some love, I met him in a pub where he'd gone to play for Fish as a favour to Fish's friend who owned the pub. the strangest gig I've ever been to, the pub didn't even have a stage, it was just a pub. My friends and I chatted with them for a long time and they were just nice guys who enjoyed a laugh. This was quite a long time after Fish had left Marillion, so it was nice to see they were still friends.
Steve Rothery my second favorite guitar player playing for my favorite #1 band ever. Very underrated prog rock band and very underrated guitar player. Everybody talk about Eddy Van Halen, Steve Ray Vaughn, Hendrix, etc who were fantastic guitar players don't take my words wrong but nobody talks about Steve Rothery (Marillion), Andy Latimer (Camel), Knopfler (Dire Straits) and couple of more who are very underrated.
Glad to hear someone acknowledge Andy Latimer of Camel. I don't hear his name mentioned very often. As for Steve Rothery, he's an absolute genius. Marillion's Clutching At Straws might be my favorite album if I was forced to choose just one. Steve's guitar playing was over the top on that one. As for his influences, I think I sometimes hear a little Mike Oldfield in his playing as well.
Glad you looked at Steve's work. He is so underappreciated. His playing has grown so much over the years from providing instrumental support for Fish in Marillion to being the emotional centre of the newer Marillion and with his own band. Yes he can play hard and fast but why when you can play this well and have so much impact. If you listen to Gaza, yes H provides a lot of the feeling but it is the guitar playing which makes the most impact.
Another big influence of Steve Rothery, besides Steve Hackett and David Gilmour, is Andy Latimer of the band Camel. Check him out if your not familiar with Camel. Great great band and Andy is fantastic guitarist.
Class acts, both Steve Rothery and Fil. Another excellent video per usual. Really glad to have found his channel. Thoroughly enjoy his commentary, and the fact that you can tell he enjoys making it. Rock on Fil! Stay genuine.
I've seen Steve play with both Marillion and The Steve Rothery Band on numerous occasions and have been lucky to have chatted with him on quite a few occasions. He's one of the nicest guys in rock music and will always make time for you. Just a quick shout out to the rest of the SRB too. They're Dave Foster on guitar, Leon Parr on drums, Yatim Halimi on bass and Riccardo Romano on keyboards (as well as vocalist Martin Jakubski for when they do the early Marillion tracks). All 5 of them are amazingly talented musicians and all are great, down to earth guys too.
My favorite guitarist of all time. It's nice to see someone appreciate the emotion Steve puts into his playing. You don't need flash over substance. Thank you for this video.
My type of guitar player with the likes of Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, Andy Latimer, Malcolm Jones and on the blues side Snowy White, they all have a wonderful touch and technique along with lovely melodies
Nice Fil...never heard of this guy but i like it thanks for the intro.....got to agree with you about melody after playing 42 years theres nothing harder for me than playing a ballad and not throwing in too many notes
Mr. Rothery is a Prog Rock wizard having no desire to show off, very emotional playing with the control to take the listener down the atmospheric rabbit hole.
For me Steve has been one of the most outstanding guitarists of the last 35+ years. If anybody loves this style then they need to check out Marillion were virtually every track has been beautifully crafted; and they’ve a massive catalogue of music :)
Wings of Pegasus - Thanks Fil for your excellent appraisal of one of the most underrated guitarists around. For me the melody & feel of Steve’s work is amazing. Your enthusiasm really comes across & you’re always so upbeat :) There are a couple of videos that highlight Steve’s solos across a wide selection of Marillion tracks for those that aren’t familiar with his work: 1) th-cam.com/video/ZadsZq82cZA/w-d-xo.html 2) th-cam.com/video/h-YqU0g9xG0/w-d-xo.html Cheers, Ian :)
Floating to paradise on a cloud. Love hearing players I've never heard especially this talented. Wonderful tone and they are so together as a group. Analysis on the money! 🎯
This it's like watching a movie, and a good movie such as this has without a doubt a beginning, a middle, and an ending. Without singing a note the instruments have sung the whole story♡
Glad I found someone who can appreciate Steve Rothery's mastery. The instrument sings in his hands. I would like to see you do a reaction to "Easter". The solo in that song by Marillion is one of the best ever, in my opinion.
I had not heard or heard of Steve Rothery, but I loved this piece. You really do get drawn in gradually to the slow, quiet fluid melodies. I never knew til your analyses about volume fading in to achieve the dreamlike style of the beginning. Learning to relax and enjoy the journey! Thanks again!
This was one of the best examples of the difference between a player and a musician. Playing what was needed for the song and likewise, when not to play. I don't even play guitar as I'm a country/blues harmonica player ( which can be the most hated instrument...lol) and one thing I have learned is, play with feeling and know when to shut up! Great analysis Fil! Rock!
I totally understand what you mean. Spending a great deal of time trying to play a run with a million notes about 20 million miles an hour is a waste. Expression is very important. I think it says a lot about the player. I can tell Steve chooses carefully his notes and does a world more with just enough expression to makes his melodic point across.
I've been enjoying Steve's work for a year or so and only just found out he was with Marillion ! ( who I still have a couple of vinyl albums of) and he is certainly in the same vein as Steve Hackett re. "breathing space" and not overshadowing the other musicians. Thank you Spotify !

@@nickimontie Agreed! There are so many, but that one really stands out for me too.
