the crowd chanting "AZ! AZ! AZ!" in grands brought me to tears. axe had such a sick run this genesis, and i'm more than excited to see what this year will bring for my favorite player.
Such an incredible player. Kept pondering all night about an alternate reality/universe where that last stock went differently... Also that moment at the end where they hug it out and Hbox raises Axe's arm up...just wow.
It looked like hungrybox felt bad about beating Axe lol. This was one of the most emotional tournaments I’ve watched in a long time. Does anyone know how much money second place got? I hope it was alot
He looked sad because usually if no ”super high level” pros like Mango are in the tournament its a free one for Hbox. And, it would have been super big for Axe to win Genesis 6.
I don't know why some people hate hbox so much well maybe it's because I understand peoples motivations and characters too well and I'm not trying to flex here. When I look at hbox and his whole melee community situation I just feel sad. Damn I really fucking wish I could live in the mind of an avarage person just for one fucking day. I probably sound like an arrogant douchebag here but it's the sad truth. You can hate me all you want for this comment btw I just felt the desperate need to share that.
I saw Axe at a grocery store a while back. I told him how cool his edge guards were, but I didn't want to bother him and be a douche and ask him for tips on how to 4 stock silentwolf in under a minute or anything. He said "Oh, that's no problem!" Expecting him to be rude I was taken aback, and all I could say was "huh?", but he kept cutting me off and saying "it's no problem!" Over and over while smiling in front of my face. I walked away and continued shopping, and heard him say "nice to meet you!" as I walked off. When I came up to pay for my stuff up front I saw him try to walk out the door with like 15 flowers for his girlfriend in his hand without saying a word. The cashier was very nice and was like "sir, I'm going to need you to pay for those first". At first he didn't hear him because he kept opening the door for customers, but eventually he turned back around and brought them to the counter. When the cashier took the bouquet of flowers and started writing in a note, Axe stopped him and told him to write a note for each flower individually "to show her that I just love her so much," and then he turned around and smiled at me. I dont even think that much love is possible. After the cashier wrote every note and put them in a bag and started to tell Axe to leave, he kept interrupting him by apologizing in a perfect, melodic tone.
Can I just say that I love the hug as a substitution for handshake/fist-bump? (Don't get me wrong, beef and rivalries make the game so exciting as well. Melee has a pool of excitable players and some of the best commentating in eSports.) I think it's such a great way to show respect to a player and overall appreciation for the game despite winning/losing. Kudos @IBDW.
I already watched this live and know the outcome of these matches but I'm still on the edge of my seat seeing them again! This was such an amazing run with so many clutch moments by Axe.
I'm not being rude or anything, but what did he do differently to get into grand finals of a super major this time around? I think axe is very skilled btw, no doubt just wondering.
Boat Master You would have to be in complete denial if you said that he didn’t benefit from bracket luck-no Armada (obviously), Leffen, M2K, or Mango is very lucky. That being said, Axe didn’t choke his opportunity and was able to beat so many very talented players to make it to grands. Game 5 wins against Legend (game 3 of a bo3), iBDW, Kalamazhu, Zain, and Plup, competitive sets against Rishi, PewPewU, Ginger (for a 3-0 it was close), and aMSa. And his two losses, to HBox and S2J, were game 5 nail-biters. I’m particularly impressed by his losers finals win against Plup because not only was Plup the defending champion, but before yesterday he had never beaten Plup’s sheik in a set. Sure, you can make the argument that he’s beaten all of those players before, but most of them have beaten him before, too. He had to clutch out so many moments to keep progressing but found it within himself to do so. Before yesterday, Axe had never proven he was capable of a losers’ run like that. And it all culminated in a 2nd place finish at a supermajor, his best playing at a major tournament ever.
Armada retiring is huge for Axe. Axe has beaten everyone in the top 10 at least once but NEVER beaten Armada iirc. So usually if axe did get to top 8 even in winners side he'd be double eliminated by armada then hungrybox and get 3rd and if he got into losers side get 3rd, 5th, or 7th. I think one tournament he beat hungrybox and got 2nd possibly losing to plup? but he has never gotten 1st at a major. With Armada gone Axe actually has a good chance to get 1st as shown by his amazing performance at G6. I'm super excited for this year. If I was writing the script I'd make this one a close one and have Axe take what he learned from G6 and just start dominating the whole year. He deserves it.
@@jrave5353 I was blown away by him beating Plup's sheik...Plup always seems like a destroyer when he's feeling confident, except when he gets to Hbox and then switches to fox. Not to say that Plup doesn't have a good Fox, but he's most talented with Sheik I would say. I think that's really awesome Axe was able to eliminate Plup, really didn't see it coming.
@@jrave5353 axe is definitely good enough to beat leffen and Mango, and he has a winning record on m2k. But I do agree after Zain, he had an easier bracket until semis. Losing to s2j was actually a good thing
Everyone knows axe is a beast, he just mains a lower tier character. If you watch him do iron mans he is a beast at all characters. That is true talent and skill
I like Hobx but I actually had to look away at the end. No hate to Hbox. But, I looked away... That's the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen anyone do.. by so much.. I don't have any way to evaluate it.. I'm just in awe.. He held up his hand.. He grabbed his wrist and held his hand in the air.. Axe's hand.. How can you win and still need that much attention for yourself? Maybe it's not that and I'm being unfair. I don't know where he is on the spectrum or whatever so whatever but that was WEIRD.
leadhesh He is a bit polarizing, while some people would have enjoyed it, Others would have hated it. So it’s better to have a consistent commentary team for top 8, that we all can agree on is very good than to piss some percentage of the viewership off.
French is my mother tongue and I can't understand a single word of his English. I'm embarrassed for him, and I always thought that they let him on commentary because no one is brave enough to say no...

Well mostly because it's not very viable to get rest setups on Pikachu, who is much lighter than the spacies. Unlike Peach (or slightly heavier Shiek) who is also light, Pikachu also has an extremely punishing move in the form of upsmash. Hbox had a good chance to do it in I think, game 5? Battlefield. Just wasn't worth it.
Me and my mates stayed up till 8:30 am watching genesis and out of the whole tournament axe was the best player we saw. We were so invested in his run 😂
Axe holds the record for most hugs at a melee tournament
8 Hugs a day keeps you happy!
I thought hugs was the most hugs
And the record for most head nods
Good guy Axe. Wholesome AF.
I was legit thinking this mad quick with the hugs
Probably the most hype for a second place finish ever
Right up there with Wobbles at Evo 2013
Mango at Genesis 3 is a contender
