This was one of my mom's favorite movies. Sadly she passed away in 2015, but on Mother's Day almost every year, I watch this movie, and wish she was watching it with me..
I lost my Mom in 2022 and I always smile when I think of her telling me I was going to see a war film because it was! Sort of I have the DVD but too raw even now to watch it! Glad you shared your memories!
A beautiful looking item, will add it to my 50th birthday present list. Don't underestimate the amount of people that appreciate metal, rock and musicals. The sound of music would be in my top 5 go to movies. Regularly play the music in the car and my minds eye can see each stage of the movie whatever song is on. Most impressive is the opening scene where we are skimming the mountains admiring the beauty before swooping in on Julie Andrews. Awesome. Another fave of mine is Oliver!. Anyone that can't recognise the importance of these films and the music isn't worth talking about music to. ❤
Depending on my mood on any given day, I can listen to anything from Mozart to Motorhead, & so thanks to my parents I grew up with this, & numerous other Rogers & Hammerstein soundtracks (King & I, Carousel, South Pacific etc.) Very important sounds for me as a child in the mid to late 60's. Thanks Dad.
One of the several film soundtracks I grew up with at home. I recall South Pacific, Mary Poppins, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, etc. Plenty of later rock musicians breast fed on the richness of all this magnificent music. I realised later in life how fortunate I was to have a dad who plunged us into such a varied wealth of great music
I’m a professional musician and some of the work that I get to do is musical theater orchestra work (also referred to as “pit work”) I was hired to do this show a few years back and I absolutely loved it! I had heard the soundtrack from time to time and was certainly familiar with it but actually playing it is a totally different experience. Tremendous piece of music. Loved every minute of it.
My earliest recollections of listening to music were two of my dad’s records ‘An American in Paris’ and the soundtrack to ‘Oklahoma’. The music to ‘The Sound of Music’ is a masterpiece. Richard Rodgers was an incredible composer. I am not surprised at this video. Lovers of rock should recognise the wealth of music that has been bequeathed to us that has laid the foundation for what we think of as essential.
I got into West Side Story because of the 'Officer Krupkie' episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. And I love Cabaret. Joel Grey's performance in Cabaret is incredible.
I am the biggest fan of sound of music . first saw the movie late 60s one of my favourite movies still at age 62 and I have the sound of music LP and the movie on Blu-ray
I preordered the 3-LP green colored vinyl edition as soon as it was announced, and it’s such a great package. They really put love and care into this release and it sounds great. Respect the classics!
Hey, we needed more advanced warning for this format change 😊. But seriously, my late mom played the heck out of this record, plus all of the other 50s and 60s soundtracks we had like Camelot, Oklahoma, and West Side Story. Great music and great memories. Thanks.
Good music is indeed good music. I grew up with musicals ... The Sound of Music, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers [my children's favorite], Singing In The Rain ... My collection spans from Jethro Tull to Frank Sinatra [greatest male vocalist IMHO], to King Crimson, to Yes, to the Allman Brothers Band, to Cold Chisel, to the Butterfield Blues Band, to Kansas, to "Outlander" soundtracks, to Van Cliburn ... on and on.
Great film and I bought this box too. The extra disc is a replacement for one of the discs in the box that was missing some of the tracks it was listed as having.
No need to apologise Barry, for people of a certain age this is likely to be the first album they ever heard as their parents would own a copy. Remember this was incredibly popular in 1967. In fact Sgt Pepper and The Sound of Music spent half a year each at No. 1 in the album charts that year, more than 20 weeks each. No other year is comparable I think until Saturday Night Fever came along (at the time the chart show used to play a different track each week from the No.1 album, and they had to start playing the SNF instrumentals after a while). It was also a major event when first shown on BBC TV in the late 70's/early 80's I think. The gap between films in cinema and then on TV was long at that time and the whole Christmas TV season was built around this one film which most of the population watched (it is on TV nearly every Christmas or Easter now). An interesting fact is that it was hardly shown in Austria (possibly due to the WWII depiction), and most Austrians have never heard of it yet it is amazingly popular in the US and UK. The country is nowadays mostly associated with this one film! (And The Third Man of course!).
In the 70s, I worked with a guy who was a fan of punk rock, but wouldn’t hear a word against White Christmas by Bing Crosby. Don’t forget too that John Peel loved the Eurovision Song Contest.
A terrific discussion and showcase of a classic film and soundtrack. Jogs the mind with many memories of a much more innocent time for many of us old enough to have been alive at the time of its release.
To be fair, though, rock is a music genre. Musicals are not. They're a form of theatrical performance that can make use of just about any music genre available.
It has to be said that the film is, and always has been, a completely stunning piece of work, and I tend to find the people who claim to dislike it most have probably never even seen it in the first place. It didn't run continuously at the Dominion Tottenham Court Road for the best part of five years because it wasn't any good, after all! I admire your making of this video, and agree that it's a shame the bluray film wasn't included 😢
Love" West side Story" and "My Fair Lady " soundtracks ( some great Jazz recording too ) . Still waiting for a Prog / Rock interpretation of them both with lots of mellotron .
Absolutely loving your humour on these videos! Absolutely first class! Excellent review videos too. I love my movie soundtracks right there along side my metal and rock 🤘
I love that soundtrack! I’m a major progressive rock fan , so immediately I know you have varied tastes in music, you being a fan of that genre as well. Thanks for sharing that!
I'm not a real fan of musicals but SoM and the original West Side Story are classics of their era. Really nice set other box set manufactures take note.
Ain't nothin' wrong with having a not-so-guilty pleasure. My favorite classic movie soundtracks are "The King and I" and "Camelot" and I don't care who knows it. Good for you and your family to have wholesome traditions!
The Sound of Music, West Side Story and The Phantom of the Paradise are 3 musicals that transcend taste. They are masterpieces. What can you do, other than love'em. O Brother, Where Art Thou? deserves a honorable mention. Maybe I am forgetting some... I am very tired right now.
Probably my favorite musical in film. Fabulous. Been thinking about buying this set and hoping for an Amazon price drop. The cheese is still on the cracker.
Looks like a great box set ... no issues from me re Sound of Music ... fabulous film which (like A Few Good Men, Where Eagles Dare, Shawshank Redemption, The Eagles Has Landed, The Italian Job, etc) I will happily watch at any time I am flicking channels ... just a classic ... so last night it was a session deciphering Jethro Tull's a Passion Play [by-passing "the Hare" though ...] and tonight it could easily be listening to this ... works for me .CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland ...
I knew your inner Abigail Devoe would eventually escape. Look at her romping over those mountains Barry. But seriously, that's a beautifully packaged box set, probably the best I've seen. Glad that your family enjoy it. It's perhaps the last great musical and one of the very best.
i LOVE this album & incredible blu ray set!! watched the movie chronically (again) when i bought the anniversary set a few yrs ago & had an 'epiphany' moment when the nun was singing 'climb every mountain' to maria. that's my least favourite song from the show but it caused me to re-think what i was doing & switch careers. weird! i figured, 'if i'm still young, why not climb a mountain' & this show really inspires me . . .
my mum had the original soundtrack album which got an airing on Sundays when I was young. I know all the words. great tunes for sure. Mums 92 and would love it, if only she had a CD player :)
I used to be so annoyed by this movie as a kid. It was so popular in the 60s and 70s, soundtrack was favorite of every mom and sister of my friends and it was a staple of music classes as I was growing up. But as I was working in video store throughout the ‘80s a funny thing happened…this was a movie my female teenage co-workers would always choose to put on to play on Saturday mornings. And you know what? I grew to really like it, to where now in my 60s I love it and also look forward to watching it yearly during the holiday season. Even my twenty-something sons like it! I am great admirer of the director Robert Wise’s oeuvre and quite honestly, Julie Andrews is stunningly beautiful.
Have always loved the music and fim. Film soundtracks are a wonderful addition to any collection. I use to use the classic sound of music intro at parties immediately followed by motorhead (live) always went down well. Inspired by a program on tv about sixties music, where they followed it with
Great film that I remember watching on its release as a child and I still have the original album that my grandmother bought. Too expensive for me to buy this set but I would certainly buy Camelot if that was to be released in this format.
I'm a huge fan of classic musicals, and not only is this one of the best, it was the biggest selling album for many years. I can trace my love of musicals through to my current love of proggy concept albums. Rogers and Hammerstein were the original proggers!
The disc in your envelope is the corrected Disc 4. When the set waa released, Disc 4 was a mispressed duplicate disc of Disc 2. Craft included the corrected disc in your package.
Five months later but anyway here's what I think: Richard Rodgers, a genius of melody. Look up the tunes he's written and you will sigh loudly. Along with Irving Berlin, my favourite of the old time composers. I have many CDs of both. I was blasting out Metallica an hour ago, so you could say I'm quite erm, elastic
I clicked on this wondering if what I saw was true? Big Prog Rock fan myself but attended a "Sound of Music" sing-along at my theatre last September and picked up a book on it later; nothing wrong with plugging good music whatever the genre especially if it warms your heart; I especially like "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and always will - that is a timeless track and would love to see a box set come out as well at some point!!!
I really appreciate your eloquent, informative and entertaining reviews of albums and artists and was wondering if you have done a review or a best to worst list of Elvis Costello's albums because I haven't been able to find one and I really enjoy his music.
Late comment sorry but Doe Ray Me is actually a very harmonic track that covers several octaves.I am surprised it was never covered by a punk band frankly.Maybe the cheese has also slipped of my own cracker?

Barry I have never seen this movie, Is it Prog or more towards hard rock? the woman you mention Julie? was she in the Kate Bush mould or more Janis Joplin however I have seen West side story, Keith Emerson did a wonderful version of America when in the Nice
Nowt wrong with The Sound Of Music mate. Looks a great set! I hope they do deluxe edition in a similar style for my all-time favourite family film - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 💥
I love it when people open up and talk about their favourite “uncool” music. Rogers and Hammerstein wrote some fabulous songs. “Some Enchanted Evening” probably my favourite.
I love heavy metal and hard rock but I grew up listening to musicals too , good music is good music.
As did I and my Grandparents in the Summer. Love Oklahoma, The Music Man and Singing in the rain.
Very true, good music is good music regardless of how 'cool' it may or may not be.
Dominic Sandbrook always says more people bought this at the time than Sgt Pepper.
This was one of my mom's favorite movies. Sadly she passed away in 2015, but on Mother's Day almost every year, I watch this movie, and wish she was watching it with me..
Same here, although I must admit that I have lost about 90% of my singing voice since fist seeing this movie more than 45 years ago.
I lost my Mom in 2022 and I always smile when I think of her telling me I was going to see a war film because it was! Sort of I have the DVD but too raw even now to watch it! Glad you shared your memories!
No scoffing here!! A proverbial masterpiece of a film! That's a beautiful looking package!

Hey many of us grew up watching the movie and watching the plays. There is a good reason why it is so popular - a timeless classic.
Credit for going left field, really enjoyed the review. Thanks

Super cool. While rock lags in popularity these days, musicals have never stopped thriving over the last 100 years.

Sound of Music is a wonderful film. The songs are musical standards.
The fact it's based on a true story makes it more endearing.
I love that soundtrack! I’m a major progressive rock fan , so immediately I know you have varied tastes in music, you being a fan of that genre as well. Thanks for sharing that!
Now we're talking. Finally some real music.
Somewhere in my youth or childhood - I must have done something good. Pure genius songwriting!!!!
I'm not a real fan of musicals but SoM and the original West Side Story are classics of their era. Really nice set other box set manufactures take note.
Thank you for covering this. Yes, you can like Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin and the Sound of Music.
Ain't nothin' wrong with having a not-so-guilty pleasure. My favorite classic movie soundtracks are "The King and I" and "Camelot" and I don't care who knows it. Good for you and your family to have wholesome traditions!
I very much enjoyed the video. I'm a fan of the "Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins". Had a crush on Julie Andrews when I was growing. A+ and Thanks
There’s a reason it is one of the best selling movie soundtracks of all time. Respect. I’ve got original U.S. copies in stereo and mono.
I just love your reviews, no matter what it is!
Probably my favorite musical in film. Fabulous. Been thinking about buying this set and hoping for an Amazon price drop. The cheese is still on the cracker.
Indeed, a classic film and soundtrack! Thanks for sharing. Impressive collection.
Loving the t shirt

Titter ye not! Good choice Barry. Let's see more like this.
I knew your inner Abigail Devoe would eventually escape. Look at her romping over those mountains Barry. But seriously, that's a beautifully packaged box set, probably the best I've seen. Glad that your family enjoy it. It's perhaps the last great musical and one of the very best.
Such a great movie, and would love to see more such videos (West Side Story, The Wizard of Oz, Holiday Inn, Singing in the Rain, etc.?)!

I bet I can still sing 90% of the lyrics to this film. We did the play in elementary and, like you, watched it every yr on telly.
Looks like I know what I want to wish for on my birthday. Looks lovely!
Many of the songs from this film are featured in the 1998 film "Goodbye Lover" starring Patricia Arquette, Dermot Mulroney and Ellen DeGeneres.

Good taste not be isolated to prog only. Bravo sir! Check out movie soundtrack to Rent, and 2008 (?) updated score of Hair. Amazing stuff too!
I'll check it out!
I didn't scoff but enjoyed your sharing of the Sound of Music deluxe edition with us.
I'm a huge fan of classic musicals, and not only is this one of the best, it was the biggest selling album for many years. I can trace my love of musicals through to my current love of proggy concept albums. Rogers and Hammerstein were the original proggers!
For my ears, West Side Story has a ton of prog on it, and that was recorded in therapy 50s. Can’t hear it in Rodger’s work. Suggestions?
'How do you solve a problem like Maria?' without tearing up at 'Climb Every Mountain', or 'Edelweiss' or over at least 10 other scenes?
The disc in your envelope is the corrected Disc 4. When the set waa released, Disc 4 was a mispressed duplicate disc of Disc 2. Craft included the corrected disc in your package.
i love soundtracks myself
Great review, I love The Sound of Music, always have! Will be using your link to purchase the set - thanks!
Five months later but anyway here's what I think: Richard Rodgers, a genius of melody. Look up the tunes he's written and you will sigh loudly.

We all love TSOM. Go on , admit it!
Nice to see some variety, had a massive crush on Charmaine Carr who played Liesl ❤ RIP
The deluxe version of My Fair Lady is constantly on rotation on my iPhone. Great review of SOM
i can't bear musicals but sound of music and west side story are special
I love the music from the movie ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I find it amusing that Christopher Plummer supposedly HATED this role and movie. 😂😂
I didn't know that
He began to call it 'the sound of Muzak' but said he later began to appreciate it.
People can scoff all they like, but I wish I'd written the songs. Then I wouldn't be living in a three bedroom semi-detached.
Part 2.... Hendrix playing star spangled banner from Woodstock.
Outsold the Beatles! The biggest selling album of the 1960s!Classic film!Shame the Movie was not included!!
Great review Barry, amusing comments as always....made me laugh.
No, it's not Van der Graaf Generator, although Peter Hammill was a fan of, and influenced by musicals in his early days - Rodgers and Hammerstein.
I really appreciate your eloquent, informative and entertaining reviews of albums and artists and was wondering if you have done a review or a best to worst list of Elvis Costello's albums because I haven't been able to find one and I really enjoy his music.
Great suggestion! I did review his last album
Thanks, ordered.
I could be playful and say, you've finally reviewed a decent album! ;-)
Late comment sorry but Doe Ray Me is actually a very harmonic track that covers several octaves.I am surprised it was never covered by a punk band frankly.Maybe the cheese has also slipped of my own cracker?
233 weeks on the Billboard Charts according to Wiki.
I must have been a naughty child (although I can't remember being too awful) because I was constantly dragged by my Mum to the cinema to watch musicals. The Sound of Music and South Pacific (which actually lasted several months LONGER than WW2 on which it was based) were the 2 that stand out in my mind.
How do you solve a problem like Maria?
Hand her over to the bloody Germans so we can all go home.
Have the album, The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, it also came with hard bound book, got it for Christmas, 68 I think
In 1967 I was 7 and told I was going to see a war film by my Mom it was the Sound of music! I had a pathological hatred of musicals afterwards! Cured by The Rocky Horror show! 😂
The Ridley Scott 80's film 'Legend' with Tim Curry is the nearest l go with musicals. Not one i guess technically speaking ? ,but it was interspersed with wonderful contributions from Jon Anderson,Bryan Ferry and even Tangerine Dream.A masterpiece of cinema with tunage (tm Barry)
@@earlgrey691 I Haven't seen that film in years! And yes I agree you!
My parents still have the original vinyl copy
Julie Andrews had a perfect voice. Maybe the closest she got to prog was her work with Moondog... Seriously.
Oh no!
First we have Scot spouting the virtues of
The Osmonds and now….
The Sound of Music?
I’m going back to bed.
🤔
I think Laibach did a version of TSOM?
Have you heard Pink Martini featuring The Von Trapps? Great album!
Nowt wrong with that Movie. It harks back to innocent happier times. The music is, good, the scenery is beautiful, and the sets are spectacular. Julie Andrews is beautiful in this movie, a real English Rose. Happy days.
Preferred her in the Tamarind Seed.Wooof.
It's no Jesus Christ Superstar the musical by which I judge all others but it's decent fare nevertheless. Great to see that all the videos are getting 1K plus views these days Barry.
Thumbs-up for your sheer daring... Apparently the stage version at the Chichester Festival last year carried the trigger warning: "This production contains Nazis".
I'm an Evita man personally. Not the dreadful movie though, the original 1976 'concept album'.
I can only assume this is an interpretation of The Sound of Music by Yes. 😮
Well, it’s not bad at ALL!
Better than Jethro or Yes! 😉
Hmmmm
Barry I have never seen this movie, Is it Prog or more towards hard rock? the woman you mention Julie? was she in the Kate Bush mould or more Janis Joplin
however I have seen West side story, Keith Emerson did a wonderful version of America when in the Nice
I make them watch it. 😂
Classic Album Review reviews a classic album. What's the problem? 🤷♂
Almost £100.00 for a cheesy soundtrack! About as far from 'Classic Rock' as you can get.
Nowt wrong with The Sound Of Music mate. Looks a great set! I hope they do deluxe edition in a similar style for my all-time favourite family film - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 💥
Love that movie
I love it when people open up and talk about their favourite “uncool” music.
Rogers and Hammerstein wrote some fabulous songs. “Some Enchanted Evening” probably my favourite.
