Context matters. The Sony Japan release was a limited edition anniversary set assembled by the folks in Japan for Japan. If anyone outside of Japan wanted it, it cost 75 dollars +. People were paying it and writing to Pink Floyd to make it available outside of Japan. PF received so many requests for this set, they complied. It's now 35 dollars cheaper and available in time for the holidays. Done and done.
As long as Roger didn't add any spoken word parts.
A replica programme in a foreign language, plus a unmodified version of the studio album, marketed to Western markets. Definitely a winner. 😂
Immagumma make a cdr of it off my vinyl
I was just listening to Atom Heart Mother quadrophonic mix from the 1970 Deviation box set this morning. I can't believe they didn't include it on the new Blu-ray. It's fantastic, and I never listen to the stereo mix.
The superior (to me) "band-only" AHM performance, from KQED for example, should have been included. How Dave and Rick fill the interludes in the absence of tubas and clarinets is far more interesting.
This is your most ASMR video.... I tune in for your VOICE!
Bought this album at leat 4 times on lp and cd. Not gonna spend any more for a nice set of paperwork and fotographs.
As much as I love Pink Floyd I have to say that
their box sets, “special releases” and whatever else,
have all been rather sub-par.
You would think that a band with such a high stature
would release stellar packages.
It’s all rather underwhelming to say the least.
When you look at artists like Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa, Beatles,
Dylan and Be Bop Deluxe and the box sets that they have released
in the recent past well…there’s no comparison really.
I think the best set that Pink Floyd released was the
BBC stuff from a few years ago. Mind you the exorbitant price
was rather restricting. I had to cobble together my set over time.
But there is a lot of good mining to be had. But even that one
they messed up the Obscured By Clouds / Pompeii release (the
best of the lot imho).
I’m not complaining about the recorded material to be found on
the box sets but somehow it all feels kinda empty and hollow.
Apropos for Wish You Were Here I suppose.
Be Bop Deluxe were an amazing band...Bill Nelson and Andrew Clark amazing musicians.
Love this album, good review I'm guessing this will be a bit pricey for me. I'll stick to my CD I bought for £5 a few years ago.
Yep £42.99 from burningshed (also got to add P&P to that price)
I think I will stick with my original vinyl release.
Bought the original Japanese version a few years back, absolutely love this album it’s in my top 3 Floyd albums.
This album and Ummagumma are personal favorites of mine
Good to know that there are others who treasure Ummagumma also. Fun fact, I bought it on cassette and it still plays well (disclaimer - I'm deffo not an audiophile 😅).
@@Robutube1Ummagumma was my first Floyd album on cassette too in 77. I now have the 94 CD version that came in the green cardboard outer.
@@bobby666666 I have that green cardboard CD version and an original double LP
@@paulayers1111 I still may get the vinyl.
Ik ging vandaag naar Utrecht om aldaar een mooie bestelling op te halen... Een verbetering aan hetgeen ik van Pink Floyd beelden al had en wat ik nieuw heb kunnen toevoegen.
Dit had ik al:
Pink Floyd Atom Heart Mother - Japan 1971
The Early Years Boxset 1971:
Atom Heart Mother 15:13
Korrelig, missende beeldfragmenten, verticale kopie strepen, VHS overdwars beeldstreep verstoringen in beeld en daardoor in het geluid. Herhaling van al eerdere beeld fragmenten.
Dit is nieuw:
Gelimiteerde Boxset uit Japan
Atom Heart Mother 16:01
“Will you be buying it?”
Of course not! I’m not an idiot.
Can't bash the release itself, as I'm a very satisfied owner of the original Japanese one. But I will admit that it's a real shame of a blatant cash-grab, seeing it pushed out to the western market, completely out of the original context of mini LP releases and celebration of Hakone Aphrodite's 50th anniversary. It seems to lead to more unnecessary complaints and nitpicking, even if there are also plenty satisfied with it. It's sort of insulting to the great effort put behind the original Japanese release.
It’s not a remix the album. It’s not a remaster. The sound hasn’t been improved or upgraded in any way at all. So who’d buy this?
Some days it’s my favourite Floyd album.
Actually, more often than not.
A lot of these archive releases are featuring stuff available on bootlegs in far better quality. The 1967-71 BBC recordings would be something that fans actually want. Some uber fans are trying to put it together for PF management to actually release officially. We shall see. I'd buy that. But not this.
acquired a copy the other month - beautiful ✨
This was always one of my top favorites by them. Not for me and my wallet though. I own the 2011 CD release.
Thanks for the review, impressive page turning as usual, I agree a missed opportunity and no audio 5.1 or Atmos mix, looks like the concert was held in a jungle clearing, not on my Christmas list.
Over priced, and as I say in the video, a missed opportunity.
The concert footage on the blu-ray is only 16 mins long! At £43 or there about makes this massively overpriced.
Pretty cool. Definitely for those that love collecting Floyd stuff.
I think so too!
Top 5 Floyd album for me
As a former Tuba player I LOVE this record.
Nice version! But I won't indulge this time! So much stuff on my list! Not enough money! 😂
Really disappointed that they did not include a 5.1 version of the actual album. There was a quad mix couldn’t be converted to 5.1?
For the money 1970. Devi/ation has two hours and 20 minutes of Blu-ray video plus the quad mix perfectly happy with that.
Also dropped the ballBig Time not including the quadrophonic mix of the entire album as released on early years but alas this is as you have stated an anniversary of the hakone gig.
This is interesting - I definitely have albums that aren't legendary status, yet I consider them great, or at the least they hold a special place in my heart, eg Stone's Black & Blue, Face's Oh La La, Funkadelic's Hardcore Jollies etc. When it comes to Floyd I dig the obvious: Dark Side, Wish, and Animals and i also like Piper, Meddle and parts of Saucer. Obscured By Clouds is probably the only one I would consider "unrated." Just my 2.
I would like to hear the additional live concerts tracks as you discussed, still I think I'll buy this release just because I'm not that familiar with this album as I am with the later albums. Excellent unboxing. Thank you
I got the Japanese version of this that came out in Aug 2021 and it's a cool package if you are a completist. Sony Japan also released DSoM in this 7" format for it's 50th anniversary back in April, which has more memorabilia goodies than the massive box set, so I wonder if this too will get a wider release? As a side this mini LP format is part of a series that Sony have done for a few years now where they released some old classics from Miles Davis to Billy Joel, with Santana being the latest to come out.
Psychiatrist on call ?
‘69-‘72 Wright and Mason carried the band on their backs. They were hitting their strides before the others.
The unreleased pictures is definitely the selling point of this release. How hard would have been to translate the program into English? A fresh mix would also be very welcome to the machine. Anyways.... PLAY LOUD
This Is completely irrelevant but i find this particular video very relaxing, in fact i'd even say it's bordeline "ASMR-ish"
Id rank it around 8th in their back catalogue. There's some good moments on there...
The ‘movie’ is plain wack. Its like Spinal Tap minus the gags. Sounds good, should’ve done a nice CD and called it a day. And what do I do with 40 page Japanese tour book?
Great video! If this was an album I liked I still probably wouldn’t get it. It seems much ado about breakfast.
Bought the CD a few decades ago, still works so no need to buy it again.
See how the Japanese respect their customers, and their purchases, by packaging the discs in a protective inner sleeve.
Compare that with the penny pinching, profit driven, disregard of customers by the Western products.
I've had to purchase my own protective inner sleeves for my discs, something the tight arsed bastards refuse to do.
Thanks for the video with page by page looks. The concert picture booklet is killer. A picture is worth a thousand words. Even if you can’t read Japanese. Won’t be buying. Seems like some of their recent reissue efforts are overly expensive without much new in the way of music. The price for the 50th anniversary edition of DSOTM is ridiculous for what you get. The Animals remaster sounds great and is reasonably priced as a single CD. Hope they do better with the 50th Wish You Were Here in 2 years. If there’s one band that doesn’t need more money which one’s pink?
Fat Old Sun is one of Floyd’s best.
Love that tune.
I may be being cynical but bearing in mind no one involved in this album appears to actually like it, apart from maybe Lulubelle on the cover, this is screaming "Got to have something out for Christmas."
You gotta get an album out, you owe it to the people. We’re so happy we can hardly count’ 🙄
I've been told the movie is worth having but not the rest unless you're an avid must-have collector. I passed on the full DSOTM 50th anniversary edition box set but patiently waited instead for he separate release of the blu-ray and....months later, its out. So I'd wait 6 months and the movie will probably get released separately.
Fantastisch album, heb de originele plaat toen nog bij Concerto gekocht.
Gaat nooit vervelen
I was expecting a DSD version of the album, they're very popular in Japan. Too bad they didn't make this a hybrid disc.
PF reissues are underwhelming IMO - Tull show how it should be done.
John Peel sessions of this was also excellent.
😄✨✨✨✨👍I am happy with this for sure too. The price wasn’t that bad either.
A relaxing critique
I’m buying it but if you know about the Jethro Tull reissue box sets have silently been reissued at £25 for much more ie 4 cd/dvd etc. This is an expensive release IMHO
I have a vinyl version of Zabrinski Point .
After having skipped the purchase of the ridiculously overpriced DSOTM anniversary release I will now officially declare to add this to my growing virtual collection of Pink Floyd ripp-off Releases. I have all their regular releases on CD and a lot of the Solo records by all 5 members, but there is no need for these.
Thank you for saving me the time to say the same thing.
“1910 Fruit Gum Company”? That was unexpected
Such a great album,no matter the bands standing
Thanks for the unboxing Barry,an yer correct-a pivitol album and a pretty weak package in honour of
Will tag this alongside the diabolical DSOTM 25th anniversary release
They're asking for some heavy cash from the fans an delivering a flimsy product
Disappointing
This release makes absolutely no sense!
They weren't playing Atom Heart Mother in 1973 they were playing The Dark Side Of The Moon.
This is probably just say they can say we gave you a box set!
I love AHM above all other Floyd albums, but this one's a hard no from me. I concur with your assertions that this is both lazy and a missed opportunity and that makes me sad.
loving your work...as per......
Most cell phones now have a translation app so you can translate the program. A few other things:
1.For those of you who love EARLY Floyd - make ALL efforts to see Nick Mason's "Saucerful of Secrets" band/tour -I saw it and it was damn incredible. Utterly fantastic show...but don't come looking for any Dark Side (which frankly, I had no interest in).
2.Regarding your shirt - I saw Santana on his recent tour about 8 months ago - Oh my heaven -what an INCREDIBLE show! He plays primarily material from the 1st 3 albums....blistering performance - this IS not TO BE MISSED.
atom heart is a fine album but do we floyd nuts need another cd of it maybe if the blue ray would have better as a stand alone release
Your recent videos on AHM made me listen to it for the 346th time but with a remix in mind and yeah: Summer 68, which IMO is one of PF's most underrated piece, needs a remix, the stereo is awful and the overall mix really bad. As for AHM we mostly need to have a coherent sound for Nick throughout the piece, especially the snare. The hi-res remaster cannot hide the fact that the sound quality varies greatly between sections.
Does this so-called "definitive" edition contain the quadraphonic (or even a 5.1) mix that was on 'The Early Years' box set?
No it is sadly lacking. However, they will argue that it is just an issue to celebrate the Japanese tour and gig.
I have it as part of oh by the way set. That will do
Sadly it appears that ZERO of the Audio matches up with the Video on the Blu-ray.
Would have been nice if they put on the quad mix.
Drumming is lousy , on the title track as I mentioned before , still bought it , why , because of the Blu-ray version put it in my Reavon player , turn up The Denon PMA 110 mmmm
still should I wait for the SACD version ?! Thankx anyway for the review ............
I'm finding the constant rehashing of music from decades ago a bit dispiriting. The last lot of Led Zep remixes were the final straw for me, added v little to the originals and just another way to make more money. Feels akin to the cynical way football teams rehash their kits every yr and charge a fortune. Wish some of theses artists were still making compelling music rather than tweaking what they've already done for a few more bucks. Remastering and reissuing done well adds to the canon but it does feel that we are being taken for mugs.
I tend to agree with you, I still have all my original vinyl Floyd, Tull and other Albums bought when they were first released plus I have most of them on CD as well. To me if you're going to re-release a fifty odd year old record then at least re- imagine it. Tweeking a few settings on a mixing console seems pretty pointless to me. AHM sounded great when it came out and it has been available ever since so I don't even see what all the fuss is about. Over the years there have been plenty of live versions kicking around as well.
This is even lazier than you mentioned. This was released exactly like this in japan a couple of years ago. So it's not even anything "new".
Perfect 👍
I was close to getting this but it seemed way overpriced.
It is a bit dear.
I wonder if they ever release The middle years? Also I’d love to see Pompeii on blu ray and 4K and the wall movie on blu ray
The Middle Years? Being Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut. What is there the from the Middle Years what hasn’t been released already? Only thing that comes to mind is a good Live recording of their Animals (In The Flesh) tour, Apart from that…. We’ve got Three Immersion sets, a recent Remix of Animals and a 50th Anniversary of Dark Side plus the Live version at Wembley. I think there is nothing new they could shove in an overpriced Box set. I have an idea ….lets call it The Final Rip Off
Pompeii NOT the Directors cut! Although the original and Directors Cut if they both will fit on a Blu-Ray. The Wall for sure!
There in a lack of official material and footage, something Mason has expressed regret about. Although, I think with AI technology as it is now, they could clean up a lot of audience recordings... I bet that comes in the future.
@@ricknorris1466all the music and video from live at Pompeii is in the Early Years box.
Agreed. There's a cleaned up version of the Oakland show from May 9th which would do nicely as the basis for an official release of a full In The Flesh tour release.
is the blu ray region 2?
I think they will be region free these days
They can destroy their homes and kill their families but they can't kill their spirits.
Once again it seems that the band a repackaging music they have already released so you are actually buying "replica" memorabilia. Well I love the music that Floyd made, not the packaging!
Didn't Dave Gilmour famously describe this album as a load of shit? I'm paraphrasing.
They have all been dismissive of it
But it did reach number 1 in The UK.
I have never understood that criticism. I think it's among their best albums. @classicalbum
So let's see, you have the same version of the album + a live album. And then you have a booklet that includes a couple of pages about Pink Floyd.....
......and then a LOT of pages about obscure Japanese dudes who presumably worked at whatever venue the band played at.
WTF? And to make matters worse, the discs are horribly packaged. No, not for me. Thanks.
These are great videos...taking the time to show the discs, packaging, even thumbing thru the books.
One of my go-to albums to this day, and I was on the fence to add this, but, after seeing this, I agree with you...an overpriced letdown that could have been so much better.
A pass for me.
Dude, the only thing special about this release (other than the packaging) is the upgraded video. How do you do a review without comparing it to the Early Years video? You had one job! 🤦♂️
It's already been done by the band themselves. We all know that it looks so mucg better, so I was interested in reviewing the content - or lack of it
Really bugs the piss outa' me that the Japanese get great items that we don't get over here. Most western people can't read any of the stuff that are in any Japanese import. To me this is so pointless. Also so tired of buying the same music over and over again. Decade after decade, after decade. Also find it so curious that this eastern country are so obsessed with western culture at the experience of their own.
Not in my top Floyd albums.
The Pink Floyd atom heart mother CD and Blu-ray the new reissue the Blu-ray is only in stereo and it sounds like crap the video is very poor like a VHS tape
I know you like this more than I do. I like psychedelic rock but not this one. I don't think the band even likes it.
This is a forgettable album - their worst if you forget to include everything proceeding this, their first five albums are forgettable - is it Japanese Only? why not a world release? I'm guessing Lack of interest - I like Pink Floyd just not this.
Very disappointing release. As you say, loads they could have done with this.
The title and the cover of this album are very funny. That's all what is memorable. But for me, musically speaking very weak, it's one of the most boring record i've ever heard. It's sure that mixing pop and symphonic is a very difficult art. The group that made it perfectly is Procol Harum. My favorite album of Pink Floyd will always be Meddle. Atom Heart Mother is simply a failure in the genre. Sorry !
Squeezing blood out of a stone , milking this brand ( sorry band ) for every dollar they can and the Floyd faithful eat it up like the starving in a food queue . These old bands really are greedy b.....ds and most be laughing their socks off making mega cash from albums they recorded decades ago as they just sit back and let the royalties roll in . Tull are much the same . No wonder Rock music in 2023 is a mere parody of what it once was . Soon The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame won't be celebrating the music the musicians have made but how much money the musicians have generated instead .
I wouldn't mind paying good money for a comprehensive box set on this album
Give us the reissue of the QUAD mix on vinyl please !.@@classicalbum
None for me, thanks...
Pink Floyd cashing in again do we need it very doubtful they have had an extremely large bite from the musical cherry over the years and like a lot of bands from this era a lot of releases were absolute piffle but they were in the right place at the right time would they have the same amount of success if they appeared today definitely not.
Strange comment. Can't you say the same thing about any musical artist in any era? Taylor Swift is only popular because she's in the right place at the right time with the right music industry people behind her.
money grab
Grab that cash with both hands.
Yes, to me, this all feels like another one of those Pink Floyd 1987 Ltd cash in and promo tools currently in circulation. Another unimaginative commercial milking and churning of the Floyd legacy. Again, teasing, more about what isn't included.
As usual the Floyd bootleggers are still ahead of the game here. Hope AI gets a hold of all that stuff in due course. No doubt it will.
meh!
Terrible album - just about Floyd's worst ever. Not worthy of a video.
AMLOR was The Stinker .
@@MisterTMHIt was bad, but that was a post-Waters line-up.
Wow - Atom Heart Mother may not be the worst Floyd album, but it's a major, rancid stinker nonetheless. So I can't wait to not get myself a copy of this cash-grab. And I am really looking forward to never having to listen to it again.
I agree , the album sucks big time. The band even hated it , I have no need for it in my collection.
Although I love the cover (there's a wonderful documentary on Hipgnosis right now on the iPlayer by the way 😉), I just can't gel with the album at all. I will gladly not be buying this LE 🙂
