that belt just about cost him a motor. I have been putting them on for decades and I have never seen one that bad. I have seen broken belts in better shape.
Is not original belt and the cost about replacement was client decision some of them even asking you to use second hand belt and etc with they own risk. In this case as a professional you just have to explain the correct way but if he insist you don't have any options. Thanks for the question.
Also, the marks on the belt don’t necessarily always line up. Another thing to consider is the difference in timing sequence of the vtt and engines and the none vvt engines. This guys vid is spot on, on how to properly install a timing belt on a NON vvt engine.

To remove the timing belt you need to remove the tensioner. The tensioner is tensioning/adjusting the belt on the pulleys to don't jump a gear and condemned timing alignment,engine.
My friend, you are absolutely right but the final decision is taken by the client. Since they do not agree to replace some extras and tell you that we risk it, you do not have many choices to insist on as a technician.
Here you will allow me to disagree, I did it to occupy individuals and I did it just as it is in the repair manual and out of workshop. And for me it was tedious because I could make it faster but I did it as the Toyota replacement instructions

New Timing belts come with Marks on the belt to line up with the marks on the cams and Crankshaft . Why didn’t you use them?

Note the 2uz with vvti is more difficult that the ordinary 2uz without vvti.
