Exploring Sycamore Gap in Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland!

  • The lovely Julia has always wanted to go to see the amazing Sycamore Gap in Northumberland, so as part of our trip 'Up North' we decided to take Robert Croser and Cheryl Craggs along with us to Hadrian's Wall to find it.
The Sycamore Gap Tree is by Hadrian's Wall, between Milecastle 39 and Crag Lough, about 2 miles west of Housesteads Roman Fort in Northumberland. This section of the wall follows the edge of a cliff - an outcrop of the Whin Sill - and several sharp dips in it caused by melting glacial waters. The tree stands within one of these dips with the cliff and wall rising dramatically either side of it. The wall and adjacent land, including the site of the tree, are owned by the National Trust.

Arr Hadrian’s Wall. Love it. We had a holiday in Northumberland about 15 years ago and visited a number of the major stopping points along the wall. It really captured my imagination. I still think the best bit was the latrines in one of the forts. I can’t wait for a holiday!

The Wall at last! I watched this with a big smile of delight all the way through (and strangely slightly damp eyes...). Great choice of backing track too. You have GOT to do more in Northumberland. You haven't scratched the surface yet of what delights there are to explore!

Walking on top of the actual wall is frowned on now because of recent collapses (naughty Richard 😆) In fact they have planted clumps of very large grass on top to deter it. It's a great place to visit and if you greet those passing, you're chat with people from all over the world.

Marvellous video with Robert,Julia and Cheryl its a fantastic location Hadrian's Wall and history and finds spans the entire occupation period and superb place to visit if your interested in roman military they had regulations for troops when it came to height the minimum requirement was around 5ft'7...and based on Skeletons found they tend to be of average height . .also the term "roman" is a bit misleading when talking in relation to here and the wall for example.as most troops actually came from all over the vast roman empire The forts held approx 12-15,000 soldiers from diverse parts of the Roman Empire - from Syria to Belgium even to Libya..and if I remember correct out of all burials found here only one through dna was traced back to Rome.i believe it may have been a women found buried in a lead coffin in an unopened sarcophagus found I think in Spitalfields London as was the first unopened one ever found,i in 2017 at Hadrian's wall they found many items relating to an early previously unknown cavalry garrison on the wall and what is really interesting is where did roman cavalry keep their horses....as no stables have ever been found.ive written on the subject before its strange as evidence is difficult to find it here is link to an article I have bookmarked on the subject lol www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/chesters-roman-fort-and-museum-hadrians-wall/history/absence-of-stables/

did you know Richard . Publius Aelius Hadrianus who built the wall declared his lover Antonius after he drowned during a boat trip on the Nile a God and was the last installed pagan god of the roman world so popular was the cult that sprung around him he gave another emerging cult a run for its money that being of a chap called Jesus. Hadrian founded a city and named after his favourite Antinoopolis (Mallawi.Eygpt). and whilst visiting the Colossi of Memmon which are 2 massive statues of the pharaoh Amonhotep III west of Luxor to mark this visit he had 4 epigrams inscribed by the roman female poet Julia Balbila. The first two tell the story of the mythical king memmon of Etheopia who was killed by Achillies at Troy and was made a immortal by Zeus..its a work to flatter Hadrian and Sabina. the 3rd is a dedication to the Muses (goddesses).and fourth a dedication to Balbila...after she wrote we know nothing more about her she simply vanishes,Antinous and Hadrian are the most famous gay couple in Roman history he was if I remember correct although being married the only openly gay emperor. what is surprising even though he created Antonius to god statue...when it came to Christian unlike other emperors. he was very tolerant stating to a governor who asked what to do with them he replied that merely being a Christian was not enough for action against them to be taken, they must also have committed some illegal act.not like Nero who used them to light his garden at night...like human candles...…..actually that's a myth actually there is no references to the persecution of Christians by the Roman state prior to Nero and the great fire of rome and did he Fiddle...highly unlikely as the fiddle didn't even exist in Ancient Rome.did you visit VINDOLANDA where they found the amazing tablets written by its inhabitants from around between AD 85 and 130.i think they might even still have an on going excavation there.if you did will there be a video..
