what a shame someone with this talent and a great career initially got only an unmarked grave. thanks to those historians makeing the headstone a reality!
IT ALSO POINTS TO THE GREATNESS OF ALAN FREED THAT HE DID NOT PLAY WATERED DOWN COVERS BUT INSISTED ON THE REAL GREATS. MS. BAKER ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS.
On this day in 1957 {October 16th} the Alan Freed movie "Mister Rock and Roll" had its world premier in New York City... The movie featured rockers Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Clyde McPhatter, and LaVern Baker...
-Sexy singer with a smooth creamy voice. I'm surprised the censors back then didn't ax this song from a 50s teens movie. Let your imagination run while listening to those lyrics.

RogerWilco Thought I'd heard I lot of Lavern Baker's material over the years, but this one was in hiding from me til now. This song isn't that bad, though the underlying tone of the lyrics might have been too strong for the 50s.
A lot of people were before Elvis and a lot of people were after him, but so what. Elvis was of his day... and both Lavern Baker AND Ruth Brown (since you mentioned them) had respect for Elvis. That's all that matters. Both Lavern and Ruth were straight shooters, they only spoke the truth in their interviews over the years. Ruth credited Elvis as the one artist more than any other white artist, that had the legitimate feel for black music to be able to break it open wide to white audiences. And Lavern spoke even more respect for Elvis. She thought the world of him. Told one interviewer not long before she passed away how fantastic Elvis was and one of the things she respected most about him was his integrity. James Brown, Sam Cooke, BB King, Jackie Wilson, Solomon Burke, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, (and so many others), their interviews are out there in documentaries, books, in the press - they all dug Elvis. People need to learn to quit taking the low road feeling the need to take a swipe at Elvis whenever we're discussing some of these other greats like Lavern Baker. It's not necessary. Probably one of reasons why they came after Freed. He didn't see color, just talent. That wasn't accepted back then.
Saw her in the early 90 in hemsby england was wow even have autograph on a record
great singer. Ms Baker and Ruth Brown were creating a sound of new fusion of Rhythm and Blues and made in into
a new popular sound.
Spotify also sent me here.... What a voice

Risqué much
She looks like Ari Lonexx
A typical way to make the rhythm match.
Slow this down and you have a man singing the song.
And then you can jive to it, Belgian style Popcorn.
Great singer, terrible song.

+Russ Johnson : DION wrote it! The same Dion from Dion & The Belmonts.
+Russ Johnson : Oops disregard comment below. Actually It was Bobby Darin. I always get those two confused!
+anonyarena Would have made a more interesting story if it had been Dion!
I know Lavern Baker & Ruth Brown were long before Elvis
yeh...singing R'n'B.
