Tuning a temperament

  • Short tutorial on tuning a temperament aurally on a Steinway Model S grand in the shop. Disclaimer: after listening to the beat speeds on the video I felt that they did not exactly correlate to what I was hearing at the piano. That is not unusual since physical location definitely affects one' perception of sound. So don't be alarmed if what you hear does not seem to exactly match what I am saying. Nonetheless you can get the idea here.

    I tune by ear and use tunelab. I have watched this video so many times as your method is different to what i have seen by my mentor. After 2.5 years its all making absolute sense to me. I fully understand your tests. Testing 5ths and 4ths.

      The testing of intervals is not to test if the equal temperament is true but the waves don´t wobble wrong and it amounts to a systematic temperament suited for certain music. 1:10 it's awfully close to seven beats per second. This is not about how sharp the key is

    As someone who is starting to consider learning this art this video is an odd mix of things I understand and can hear but also things I realize I don’t understand well and can’t actually hear well yet.

      Just use PianoMeter and learn that with the unisons. It's easy, it took me a month to learn. Then you can learn temperament and expanding the octaves.

    Just watched your video. Nicholas in Brazil. Hello ! I think that was very good and quite fast. If I may say so, I was taught and do it a little differently: I tune the temperament from F33 to E44. The 4th A-D is the only one @ 1bps. Lower 4ths are slower, higher ones a bit faster. With 5ths I listen to the 2nd coincident partial. Outside 6ths are indeed a tad faster than the inside 3rds. I usually go first in 4ths and 5ths:
    A-E, A-D, D-G, G-C, C-F. E-B, B-F#, F#-C#, C#-G#, G#-D#, D#-A#.
    Then redo with 3rds and 6yhs:
    A-F, F-D, A-C#, D-A#, A#-F#, F#-D#, D#-B, B-G, G-E, E-C, C-G#

    Your methods are very good. I like your tests of 5ths and 4ths to see if they are narrow and wide. Great video. Do something indicating your tuningvthe bass and then the treble. Would be. Great to study also.

    Excellent video. Yes, like you said our perception was different than yours about the 4ths, but it still turned out great.
    Ps, your sneeze made me laugh out loud. Very unexpected! 😂

    1:26 I did not know you can make a key (A4) play longer by keeping its coincident partial (A3) pressed. It makes sense from an electrician point of view. You connected the A3 by keeping it down but not pressing it so that it sounds

    Are you making them all a beat per second ? Isn´t that equal temperament?

  • @ellapaula
    @ellapaula 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When tuning the temperament, you compared notes to the higher notes on the piano- wouldn't those not be tuned yet, so not be a good comparison point? I've just started learning piano tuning, so there's a lot i don't know yet.

      @ElikemTheTuner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So long as the note being used for the comparison is able to produce an audible beat, it's perfectly fine to use it. It doesn't have to strictly be in tune. It's just a reference point.

      Yes. Those are the coincident partials

    I also didn´t know that you can count the wobbles during a playing key

    Those notes have three strings each. How can you be only tuning one string of each note?

    • @champ10ns08
      @champ10ns08 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's using a Temprament Strip. You can see it - it's barely visible - it's red and is over the other side of the frame. It's muting the 1st and 3rd strings, leaving only the 2nd (middle) string open. I hope this helps

    Your checking coincident partials, which is great, but not helpful if you hadn’t tuned them first.

    Выстраивая терции - сексты за счёт неровностей в квинтах-квартах мы получим в итоге неровности в аккордах,когда будем расширять диапазон рояля вправо-влево...т.е. мы искусственно выводим терции в узком диапазоне.

    forget the partial business. That's nonsense. This is not the way to learn how to tune a piano.

      Care to elaborate? Perhaps you know something that every piano tuning college in the world doesn't?
