  • On Mother's Day, two-year-old James and I selected California native perennials plus annual wildflowers to create, with the help of his mother, Cari, a Mother's Day bouquet of wildflowers. See what some of the possibilities are using California native plants and flowers.
Perennial flowers and annual wildflowers include: Cercidium-parkinsonia, Desert Museum palo verde, Clarkia unguiculata, Elegant Clarkia, mountain garland, Grindelia camporum, gum plant, gum weed, Salvia clevelandii 'Aromas', Cleveland sage Aromas, Salvia leucantha 'Santa Barbara', Santa Barbara Mexican bush sage

While I like and purchase / use showy hybrid ‘florist flowers’, I have developed an aesthetic sensibility that appreciates those natural blooms that haven’t been manipulated by the hand of man. Natural flowers tend to be smaller and less flamboyant but their subtle coloration and delicate details draw the observer in for a close examination. All in all a more significant experience of beauty than glancing at a bouquet of red roses.

Sorry it took me so long to respond, Love of Plants. Until a few years ago I didn’t really know too much about California wildflowers except what I saw in crossing the desert. But now I’m becoming a little better informed and I must say I really enjoy watching what that wildflower seed does in April, May and June. Especially the different species of Clarkia!
