    Sorry, I've been meaning to send that pile of locks for almost a year. It took cleaning out the office from a PCS to do it.

    Bill, that green CARC Painted aluminum chunk is from where it was securing the commo system in some tactical vehicle. Also, those 100Gs are what supply gives us instead of American locks now.

    Wow, that is a dream come true for someone like me starting to pick. I am located in Sweden, and have been watching your videos for almost 6 months before "getting my hands dirty".
    I just received the dangerfield praxis kit recommended by you and as soon as I get my hands on some new locks it will be reviewed from a complete beginners point of view.
    I am on the lookout for locks to get better at picking and unfortunately none of my friends have any spares.
    Anyway, thanks for all the videos, you're an inspiration to me.

    Heya Bill, Just chiming in to say thanks for all of the great content. I didn't know I had an interest until I stumbled across picking channels like yours a while back and started fiddling with it a bit myself. I finally got around to ordering a practice lock and a cheaper entry pick set. Here's hoping the hobby sticks!

    Q. "Why are they ALWAYS right behind the tension wrench?"
    A. "Because you're going top of the keyway... if you were going bottom it would be a high cut all the way in the back behind a deep cut... Murphy's Law's of Lockpicking" lol...
    (Nice save BTW.... )
    Good vid as always, I'm sure some folks are gonna get a good intro into picking with the ones you send off!!!

    Just recently got into lockpicking, and your channel has been my number one source of info! Your videos have gotten me off to a nice start, and I've already picked all the locks around my house like 50 times a piece. Where is the best place to get old, unused locks? Not looking to spend big bucks getting a little pile of locks new. Thanks in advance.

    All of those locks are in fact government issue locks. the 5200 series are the ones I remember on everything. the 100 series locks are the new locks the Army is using these days. I know this because I too just got a bunch of them from my brother and son-in-law who are still serving.

    @bosnianbill - Hey Bill! I recently picked up a basic Southord PXS-14 after watching almost all 992 of your videos and managed to pick open Master #1/#3's within the first 2 tries. Moved on to the doors in my house and picked all the kwiksets. Then I followed your advice and ran down to the local locksmith to ask for any useless locks for my new hobby.
    Locksmith responded with a prompt "no" and "be careful with those things, if you get busted, it's a felony"
    I looked at him in bewilderment and got kinda turned off at the idea of my new hobby. Correct me if I'm wrong, it's only a felony if there's intent, right? Picking my own stuff, in my own home, is perfectly fine? Carrying a pick set in my car is fine?
    I followed up with a locksmith around my work and got the same shunning response.
    I ended up getting a Schlage cutaway rekey-able lock off of eBay but I'm suddenly a lot more paranoid.

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Looks like you found an unfriendly one... Don't be discouraged, many "old school" locksmiths want to keep their "secrets" and discourage picking altogether. As long as you are picking your own locks in the privacy of your own home you're good. The moment you pick someone else's lock without permission, THEN you've crossed the line. Easy.

      furiousbob I would add that you should check your local state and city laws. in Oregon, posession of the tool is not considered prima facia evidence of intent to commit a crime, however I've been TOLD that if you are in posession of bump keys in California and have no lock Smith affiliation you'll be charged with a felony. I'm not positive, just advocating that you really look into your local laws. that being said I completely agree that in your own home, with your own locks "should" be absolutely safe. but, if they enter for another reason and find your tools and the local law indicates a crime then you're looking at more charges. just food for thought.

    I always thought that light tension was just a finger rested against the tension wrench. That looks like Bill is piling on some pressure there though. What exactly is "light tension"?

    • @1nkw3ll
      @1nkw3ll 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      English Heart for me, I measured with a fairly sensitive scale is about 1-1.5 lbs of pressure, but it's different for everyone. Light tension is anywhere between just barely holding the tension wrench in, and between feeling a little pushback from the lock. Typically, at least, as I stated before it's different for everyone. I think what he was doing with all the tension he shoved on it was to bind all remaining pins and figure out which ones were truly set (floating key pins) and which still needed attention, and then back to light tension to continue picking.
      There's also the problem that because they're government locks the spring tension on them is quite large, so in this case "light tension" would be just enough to overcome that counter-tension and give the core a little turn as well. So I guess it's both individual and situational.
      I'll stop here before I get redundant. Hope this helps

    The heavy duty federals SS series can be a good test of skill the one I have gutted seemed to have a few different security pins but super sloppy core and I could not work out why it was so hard it had very little feed back my partner gave it to me after he picked it and said good luck it took him a good while to open himself it was given to us with no key and as u say sometimes the stars align and this was one of those locks and I also noticed in a comment bellow about a guy keeping them in his car the only people I am aware of who can carry are locksmiths the police sometimes carry snap guns or electric picks or in Sweden where u are allowed to carry them apart from that it is illegal to carry unless u fall into one of these categories of people and in the or Canada USA I would of thought it is an offence to carry them even if in a motor vehicle well it is in the UK if the police want to make a issue about it as for getting locks from a locksmiths junk bucket can be a pain as well my partner use to be able to get bucket loads but now everyone is giving us the look upon asking if they have any old locks so my partner buys them know and it's getting very expensive now so we may have to just stick with what we have we also have a naughty bucket but no joy with them yet but he keeps at it as do I but they are evil no feedback at all maybe the Euro locks over here have better tolerances we have spent hours if not weeks on them but it seems the moment my partner opens one and I see him open it I seem to get the faith that if he can do it so can I and like wise with when I have picked a lock he can't we are at war I sit watching tv and if the program is not of his taste he gets the locks out but it can be very distracting when my favourite programmes are on so I repay him the favour when his programs are on tv lol
