The Donkey Carol (Video for our Church on Christmas Eve

- When my wife told me that our Pastor wanted to incorporate the theme of the Donkey, I was elated! The carol that I loved could be wove into a moving depiction to the birth of Christ!
Here is a little background for this joy. About 20 plus years ago I purchased Classic FM Magazine in December and the issue featured the carols of John Rutter, with whom I was not familiar, along with an accompanying CD.
I immediately fell in love with Rutter’s music, the sounds of his carols so moving and filled with warmth, the lyrics so touching and sweet. I experienced a renewed love and affection of this blessed holiday, Christmas, an emotion that usually dissipates a bit as one ages.
In this issue, Classic FM premiered Rutter’s new carol, The Donkey Carol, a carol which brought to life the nativity as experienced through the eyes of a donkey. How unique, how intriguing! The music was bright and joyful with rhythms that imitated the walk of a donkey, the reflective lyrics conjuring up insights about service, humility, and faithfulness from one (an animal) who walked alongside greatness without acclaim or recognition.
Throughout the ages, music has been written by many composers concerning animals at the Nativity, for the text called O Magnum Mysterium.
“O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord,
lying in a manger!”
This song setting became the most popular symbol for the mystery of the humility, the humbleness of Jesus right at his birth!
But “The Donkey Carol” expands on this imagery a bit further. Our little Donkey has a purpose which is to bring Mary safely to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus, our Savior who will talk about unconditional love, unity, redemption, and hope.
Our little friend accomplishes this mission as he reminds us that we all have a purpose in spreading the Good News, and asks in his unassuming way, “What is yours?”
