  • At the UBC Farm, deciduous and coniferous trees have different impacts on the forest floor. However, Dr. Margaret Schmidt (SFU) notices how earthworms have altered the forest floor at the coniferous site. Just a few steps apart the stands are very different. The litter is different two, with slower decomposing needle litter at the coniferous site compared to the more rapidly decomposing leaf litter. The forest floor is a very important component of forest ecosystems, influencing biogeochemical cycles, biodiversity and carbon storage - acting as an important carbon sink.
