We have a Greek fest here (Huntington, WV) every fall at the Greek orthodox church, and I swear there's a guy there that makes EXACTLY what you've described, and yes, it's Goddamn fantabulous. That, souvlaki, and the little delicious potatoes (and about a dozen Mythos beers, haha!) make me REAL happy.

The beef/lamb mystery meat (which most people in America know as "gyro") sucks once you try real gyro. Thankfully, I live in Queens, not far from Astoria, so there's plenty of places here with actual pork and chicken gyro.

American Greek restaurants are tricky. It’s hard to replicate the real thing when you don’t have Mediterranean produce. A lot of Greek restaurant food is too heavy and greasy, not saying it’s all bad, but it should be more fresh and vibrant than what you typically get.
