Mouse cage enrichment

I think a better form of enrichment is simple - less mice per enclosure (3-5 per 200 square inches max), a proper substrate depth at around 4 inches, a nesting material, enough hides for all the mice, a proper sized wheel (8 inches), chew toys, and optionally, foraging activities.
    Here is an example:
-10 gallon tank or equivalent with 3 mice
-4 inches aspen substrate and toilet paper or tissue paper for nesting
    -An 8 inch wheel
-2 hides of some sort (tubes count) and a small fabric hammock
    -Toy(s)
    -Hanging foraging toy
This comes close to pet mice standards. If there isnt enough budget or room for this much, something as simple as an 8 inch wheel and 4 inches of substrate would suffice.

These are great ideas, I love the different trials. Thank you for your work, and caring.

Glad you like this. Many of the suggestions for and improvements in lab animal care come from the care staff.

Functional would include, I would hope, besides being engaged all day long- which is unnatural- eating, sleeping, and playing. In the particular video shown, I don't see any of those natural behaviors, just mice frantically wanting to escape using the so-called enrichment props. I mean, it is noble to want to study how to increase functional space for mice, but I'm afraid not this way. There has to be something missing or wrong with their hypothesis because this just looks so wrong.

I think the problem is that there are way too many mice in such a tiny cage. I can imagine this must be incredibly stressful for them.

What do you suggest to make it better?

they are feeder, un domesticated mice. of course they are trying to escape and it is not making it better that all walls are clear can make them more vulnerable.

@@kay.3m.3ss they're lab mice not feeders. Also pet mice, lab mice, and feeder mice are all domesticated and technically the same type of mice: fancy mice.

I see no enrichment. This cage is way too small and is basically garbage, sure a mouse could live in that but not happily or long at all. Also there are so many mice in there...this could clearly stress many if them out. Get a better cage...at this point putting these mice in this tiny cage and putting that many in there is considered animal abuse, GET A BETTER HABITAT! If you find this comment rude or disrespectful you'd better take it up with me.

This is far more enriching than the average lab mouse cage

There is scientific research showing that cage size doesn’t effect stress levels or improve welfare in mice. There are also study’s showing things as simple as card board tubes and a nest box SIGNIFICANTLY improve mice quality of life. This set up is amazing stop crying.

It's horrific seeing so many mice in such tiny cages. Humans are so selfish 😢
