This is unrelated to the video, but I want to thank you for making all of your helpful hamster videos. My younger sister, who is eleven right now, was obsessed with rodents for years. She begged our parents to let her get one, whether it be some sort of mouse, rat, or hamster. Our parents agreed to let her get a hamster, but she had to do all the research herself, and learn how to properly care for it. We all trusted her, because she was a very responsible nine year old. So every day, constantly, almost nonstop, she watched videos and did research on hamsters and hamster care, and you were her main source. I'd walk into her room at any given moment, and 99% of the time she would be watching your TH-cam channel. She even took notes. Soon, she started to prepare. Each day, she would tell us so many hamster facts that she had learned, and she saved money up to start buying supplies. Once she had everything set up, we went when she was done with school the day after her tenth birthday to the pet store, and she got to take home her Syrian hamster. After not even a month, she kept upgrading the cage, finding problems and solving them. When he bar-bit, she upgraded to a larger cage. When he still bit the bars, she upgraded to a large bin cage. Then, she got a new wheel, and upgraded to an even larger bin cage. All at the age of ten. She cleaned it as often as she needed to, and she cared for it very well. A few months later, after preparing much more, she got a dwarf hamster (something with a long name I can't pronounce.) He was in the Syrian's old bin cage, that he wasn't using. They were both very healthy, and very well taken care of. They still are. Now she's eleven, and she knows so much about hamsters it's honestly shocking. She's taught me a lot. Both the hamsters are still thriving, and she continues to take good care of them. She's even educating her friend on proper hamster care, since her friend is planning on getting a hamster, too. I thank you, Victoria Raechel, because you were pretty much the reason that so many hamsters got to live good lives. You are a vessel of knowledge, and I thank you for this.

You forgot to mention that Hamsters have very little internal temperature regulation. This is why a hamster should be kept in a controlled environment usually between 68 - 75F. If a hamster is not kept in this temperature range they can either enter torpor on the low end or have their blood thicken (on the high end) possibly causing internal organ damage hastening an early death. In the wild a hamster will regulate their temperature primarily by living under the earth, where the temperature is kept much more moderate compared to the weather in the regular weather outdoors. Plus the hamster can further regulate their temperature by going lower or higher under ground, depending on the outside conditions. Thus the longer tail for temperature regulation in the mouse allows them to live in much more diverse environments. Burrowing in the paper bedding allows the hamster to regulate and control their temperature in a domestic environment but only to a very small degree compared to the wild.

I've had six mice and two hamsters. They are both great pets, but different. I liked mice because you can have more than one, they're awake during the day, and their bites don't hurt too bad, but they do smell a lot worse than hamsters and poop all over you when you hold them. Hamsters generally like human company more and the cheek pouches are pretty darn cute, but the bites can hurt or even bleed. Both are excellent escape artists!

How about hygiene? I had a hamster many years ago and on one hand he was very dirty because in his nest he used to put food and poop... together!! And he was sleeping there! But on the other hand his excrements were hard "objects" which didn't smear everything they touched, so apart from his nest being a mess he was a clean animal. How are mice in these aspects?

I think there is a huge prejudice towards mice and rats - especially rats. This is because they are commonly viewed as pests. I understand that they can cause a lot of destruction and are often vectors for disease but that's no reason to decide they don't deserve to be treated with compassion. Inhumane kill traps such as glue traps are starting to be banned in certain places now, which is great. I don't understand what's so difficult about a catch and release trap. Catch the mouse, release it somewhere safe but far away from your home. If a home is regularly getting pests, maybe people should look into why that is rather than hurting an innocent creature that is just trying to survive. I am fascinated by all rodents, so far I've owned hamsters and guinea pigs but one day I'd love to have mice or rats.

Yeah I just got hamsters about three months ago and people ask me about them referring to them as rats.
I think it’s that passive mockery based on some preconceived notion they’re “lessor” pets than say cats or dogs.
Usually that just stops if you shows you’re undeterred by their shortcomings and it’s obvious in your enthusiasm. That’s been my counter push showing people my new creativity and willingness to go further for this “lessor” pet than most would for their own cats and dogs.

We have 3 pet hamster species with stripes on their backs-Chinese, Campbell's, and Winter White.
Winter White and Campbell's can interbreed but it's not recommended. Otherwise you can't breed two species of hamsters.
The hybrid-between Winter White and Campbell's-has stripes on their backs.
The Roborovski is very tiny and doesn't have the stripe like the Campbell's, White and the hybrid.
It otherwise looks like them and more closely related to them than they do Chinese and Syrian hamsters.

From my experience mice are better starter pets, when i had mice they never bit me and would never try escape but each hamster ive owned has at least bit me once. Mice are also easier to care for since they can climb

not Victoria (obviously) but I have a free roamed bun bun! He gets a hay blend of primarily Timothy hay as well as orchard, oat, and forage blends. I give my guy a mix of science selective and oxbow pellets as well as some supplements. He has a water fountain, two bowls, and a backup bottle and gets a daily salad that either has spring mix, romaine, green leaf lettuce, dandelion greens, or occasionally kale (depending on what’s in season.) he also gets basil, fruits, and veggies! hope that helps :)

I've owned Hamsters, Gerbils and now mice. Mice like to climb, so they use more of the height space my Linmonn. I'd love to own gerbils again though to see the burrows they would make! Perhaps I will when there are no more mice left to adopt at my local rescue after my current colony of mice pass away.

My boyfriend and I live together and I have 2 hamsters, Fred and Darla. Him and his brothers say that “they’re all rodents so they’re all the same and they’re disgusting and they’re pests”. Even though both of them smell very clean like cats and Fred for some reason kinda smells like a teddy bear or a light scented dryer sheet 😂. I don’t know why but he just smells really fresh. Regardless of any of that, he still refers to them as rats or gerbils. For example: “Did you feed the rats?” And then I’ll reply “what rats?” Then he’ll go “rats, gerbils, whatever” lmao 😂

I showed a picture of a Syrian hamster to a friend. She said, "I hate rats!"
    I told her it's not a rat-it's a hamster."
I knew it had a tiny tail-and can tell her that the animal is not a rat since it has a short tail unlike a rat.
Mice look like rats to me except they are smaller and have slender tails.
She said that she hates hamstes too.
People dislike rats and mice because a lot of them are are pests that carry diseases, invade the house, chew on things and go to the bathroom on the floor (usually near the wall and behind the furniture and (people) toilet.
Those little trespassers can't help it. They just do what they need to do to survive.
If you can get the long tailed rodents from a breeder or raise them as orphans they can make cute little pets.

Hello Victoria! Sorry for the weird TH-cam account but this is my brothers from years ago😂 I am 10 and love hamsters, I have had 3 hamsters in my lifetime. My first one was called Ledo and was a Syrian I had when I was VERY young (about 2) and was unfortunately not cared for correctly , so my parents re-homed him. Then, on my 3rd or 4th birthday I got a female Syrian who was housed in a critter trail with no enrichment AT ALL 😭 She was called Sarah-Sniffles and was very overwhelmed when we moved house from Cardiff city to Jersey Channel Islands so died shortly after😭 Then when I was about 7 or 8 I got a winter white dwarf with bright red eyes, who I named Tiddles ☺️ and for the beginning of her life she lived in the exact same cage shown in the beginning of a your hamster care throughout the years video, then, thankfully I stumbled across your channel and spent the next few months hardly leaving my room so I could learn about Hello Victoria! Then I taught my cousins and family with hamsters everything I knew, so their two hamsters ( Kiki and Lenny☺️) lived for ages until the hamster died of a brain tumour. Since then, years and months have passed, and now I am 10 and am very interested in looking after a hamster again, and have seen a Russian female one who is not properly cared for, who I would like to help, but I have a budget, and was wondering if you could recommend any places in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧/ Jersey Channel Islands where you can get hamster supplies for a decent price?
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this comment,
    From Nina.

Great video with science based facts! However, while it may be true that inbreeding has negatively affected the lifespan of captive mice and hamsters, they do naturally have a short lifespan in the wild. They have a high metabolism and along with their incredibly fast and efficient reproduction this often goes hand in hand with a shorter lifespan.

I had mice before & I enjoyed them a lot bc they woke up earlier. It’s also cool to see them in groups doing their thing.
The smell is what turns me off. Mice are more pungent, they can’t help it.
I think rodents in general are very misunderstood as pets for adults. They’re often looked at as pets for kids but they require so much care, they’re great for adults, w a kiddo to help, or no kids.

Do you lower the protein % for hamsters older than 6 months and then again at 18 months. We feed Marazi rat and mouse blocks so protein is 23%. What do you feed and do you change it as they get older?
