I do alot of groomed fatbiking in Maine. Its so much fun. Its insane how fast a flowy it can get. In fact about 75% of my Strava PR's are recorded during the winter. As i always say "when the skiing sucks, the fatbiking rocks"

Thanks for the great ride and advice on the importance of tire pressure.

I’m a trail groomer in Maine. Looks like some nice riding there. Those 4.0’s are about as small as you can go. 4.5 and larger are the answer for serious float. Looks like someone groomed that system with a Snowdog.

Yep, I probably wouldn’t even ride a 3.8 on groomed trails even if it was technically allowed just because I’m not the lightest rider out there. I’ve ridden 27.5x4.5 and didn’t love it but maybe some of the new 4.3s that have come out recently would be the sweet spot of weight and float.

What trail system in Maine do you groom?

@@Nicky_Pin_It There are several trail systems in and around Bangor. I’m a small part of the puzzle. The Rick Swan Recreational Trail system is another groomed system that has some nice trails.

Here they call it just cold-cough.... Not sure, since I have no any medicine profession, but it has something to do when you breath in cold air, inside you when it "opens" it increases oxygen in lungs where lungs can't handle this packed air since it's frozen, it makes you cough... Not sure if is a bad thing, but at least normal.

Every time we get snow here in Oklahoma, it's literally gone in two to three days and the trails are too muddy to ride. Last precipitation we had was over an inch of sleet w/ a light dusting of snow. Our trails are a bit too technical to ride when it's icy

I grew up in North Texas, so I can very much relate to that. When I first moved to Utah I was so confused how you could go ride the same day that it rained and not be caked in mud.

Have you moved back to Butte? I was out there the same day that is my truck you passed in the parking lot where you came out. Bike on

Haha small world. Yep I’m in the Butte-ish area.

Cool vid. How does the mayor compare to your other fat bikes in the snow?

So good, love it. The front end wants to wander a little more in the snow than others I’ve ridden, but it’s well worth it for the downhill and the rest of the year.

How fat is fat? I have 700 x 55mm. No steel spikes, just knobs. And wouldn’t it be a good idea to have some gear just in case you got stuck?

Most people and trail systems consider 3.8” wide and up to be fat. My tires on this bike are 27.5x4.0” and not studded.

700x55 mm converts to 29x2.165" . A lot of mainland European commuter bikes (Netherlands, Denmark) make that work with metal studs, but their city trails are also incredibly well maintained.
