Wonderful! I love your finished product of Artwork. I was a little tired of Watching your changes but I love the end result. AWESOME. Beautiful sunset.
Thank you so much, Susan! All my pieces go through many stages before they're done. It's the layers that create depth and interest in my paintings. Thanks for watching!
What an honor to watch you paint Betty. This was so wonderful for me. Love your color combinations - you just have a way of making them blend perfectly to make the most incredible scenes. My imagination can always see fabulous things in your paintings. You are such a great inspiration to me. Thanks bunches and bunches for sharing. j.
I loved creating those landscapes...so full of texture and interest! I have one on paper framed in my kitchen that I see every day. I still love it! Thanks so much for your sweet comment!
now this is what I call an instructive video. fabulous Betty. so inspiring the way you paint with your hands. I learned a lot from watching you. thankyou.
I love your process especially reconfiguring with layers in the "Once Was" series. Very visceral painting with your hands. also the addition of oil pastels can add detail. Gonna try that! Thank you so much for sharing!
@@BettyFranksArt I want to extend so much gratitude to you for sharing your process. Abstract landscapes have been percolating for awhile. In the past, I've started with a thick layer of gesso and then pulled up the white into the colours, but have searching for a process to give a different sense of depth and the mixed media component - you provided that. I love your teaching and look forward to more! Your intuitive painting and doodling is so perfect to inspire me in my invitations as art therapist. Lots of love. You are a gift.
Love your abstract landscapes, Betty. I enjoyed watching your process...experimentation leads to so many wonderful surprises. And thanks for reminding me about Jane Davies' method of picking up paint with saved "scrap" paper. That is a great way of creating texture and moving paint around your piece - fun!
I love how you work with the paint directly on the canvas and also with your hands. I’ve always done that but not too many people do! Love these pieces thanks for sharing!
What fun! I just found you while looking for ideas for painting acrylics on textured surface. I’ve subscribed and look forward to watching you create more! Thanks.
The thing I love the most is how tactile and hands on you are with your paint. I’m “all in” hands knees and toes when I paint so I love seeing an artist not wearing latex gloves. 😏
Beautiful work and demo! I love the way you just get in there and use your hands-Messy, but it seems like a really fun way to work with the paint! I will have to try that in one of my future paintings! : )
Love it ,love, love it,messy but looks like you were enjoying yourself...the blending is outstanding...i would like to be able to blend ..keep up the creating
Inspiring. Re lids, what I do is I don't add paint through the lids. I take them off and use the paint straight out of the bottle so I don't have to worry about them getting clogged. Then screw them back on. Hope this helps 😊
Your work is beautiful! Why are you using glaze together with the paint, what is the effect? Thank you very much for your generosity sharing your knowledge and talent.
Have you tried using paper towels to lift paint? It leaves whatever pattern it has. So does crinkled tissue paper, which you can use as collage material.
Thankyou so much for showing this video. Betty would you use oil pastels in a picture that would later be framed behind glass? do the oil pastels take a long time to dry?
Andeana, I used to use oil pastels a lot, but I recently had an incident with shipping one of my pieces and I have now vowed not to use them anymore. Technically, the oil pastels never dry, however, I have experienced that with enough varnish, they will get covered up. I heard that oil varnish is the way to go. I have not tried it yet.
I strongly recommend using a skin barrier protection cream at a minimum or gloves as the skin absorbs the metals in paints. For example cadmium red. Skin protection is so overlooked or ignored when painting.
Yes. I recently started doing fluid acrylic painting and I noticed that the skin on my hands that had paint on them turned really rough and bumpy and my fingernails got really dry. I wear snug fitting purple nitrile gloves, now. It works just fine.
+Charleysays moouw I want to know this too. I was going to subscribe but It doesn't appear if the owner of this channel is very engaged. Too bad, she probably has a lot of valuable advice to give.
+MRSMakeupBag Yes, to be honest, I feel that was what stopped me from subscribing too, as the results are beautiful, but you don't want to paint anything if it isn't going to be any good further down the line. If the oil pastels reacted with the paint it could cause damage, and also if it would need framing behind glass because of any oil pastel on the surface,. so many questions, but if you're serious about art you do have to ask them I guess, so I didn't subscribe either.
+Elli B Hi Elli, yes, it's okay to use oil pastels and acrylics. I varnish the piece once it's dry using one coat Golden gloss varnish and then two coats of satin varnish.
It's very difficult when you want to be sure that things are archival, and there are so many conflicting opinions on the safety of sealing oil pastels. I can appreciate you think it's ok or you wouldn't do it, but I'm still not totally convinced. I guess that's my loss because I do love the look of them together, and if there was going to be a reaction it probably wouldn't be in my life time :D Thanks for getting back to me anyway. Appreciated.
Very nice!!! How do you varnish a painting with acrylic varnish that you have used oil pastels on? This has been a burning question that has plagued me when watching mixed media artists. 😃
Good question! I no longer use oil pastels because they never dry. Back then (and now) I used a fixative spray first and then two coats of varnish. I honestly now can't recall if I tested it (by rubbing my finger across it) to see if it was totally protected.
@@BettyFranksArt sorry if I didn’t explain that better. I was referring to the concept “fat over lean, never lean over fat” where you never put acrylics over oils because eventually it will peel off (I know this from experience. Lol!). Many years ago I started a painting in oils and left it at my parents home. My dad finished it in acrylics without knowing it was oil paint. It has just recently started to peel. 🙁
+Mairead Harkin It's a real challenge working small. I switched back to larger paintings after this one and as of yesterday, I am back to small again. Keeps things interesting and challenging for me!
sorry to comment so long after Betty but I have watched this several times and you just make me giggle, you seem so spontanious but your completed pieces look so structured. love it when you blend in the blue in the sky on the 8x8 then look at your fingers see that still some paint on them and just blend it into the red at the bottom : {} Thank you
@@BettyFranksArt thanks for answering, and pleased to say from that I had the idea of instead of washing off my palette and brushes or whatever I am using old credit card, or spoon, I wipe it all onto a new paper or canvas as a sort of underpainting for the next one. As you explained to a viewer on a large seascape commision piece I have just watched little bits do show through sorry to take up so much time Thanks again
Is there any longterm harmful affects we should be aware of from getting paint absorbed through our bare-skinned hands if we don't use gloves? I know some paints have some chemical...but I can't recall it. )
Hi there, I just found your channel. Its interesting what you do. Im just curious if you have to be careful using oil pastels amongst acrylic? How do you make it work and does the art piece last? Any other info on this would be great. Thanks so much
Sorry about the late response. I missed this question! For the most part, I have had success with using oil pastels with my acrylics. It takes a very long time for them to dry/harden. I put water-based varnish over it, but I heard that using an oil based varnish is better. I haven't tried that yet, because I had stopped using the oil pastels. But, I think I'm going to use them again and will probably give the oil based varnish a try.
Hello Betty, and thank you for your demonstration. May I just say that at 2'12'' you mention Phthalo Blue as having Red Hue, but it has a Green Hue. Ultramarine Blue has Red Hue.... With kind regards. Anne
