I've lived in Japan for a while and visited the country 4 times. One thing that's common from people in my home country the U.S. is the worry that the language barrier would be too much to handle. From experience though, there is high language barrier, however, it is higher usually when you're out in smaller towns or cities not known to host many foreigners. However, major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, even Nagoya and parts of Kyoto have many people that can speak quite a high amount of English. Even many Japanese people can speak basic amounts of English, so it's not too much to worry about. Another thing is the signs, most signs in Japan are in English, places such as train stations, stores, places of entertainment, and others. It is helpful to use your phone too which allows you to find many places with translation options. Japan also has rent pocket wifi service as well, so foreigners have the ability to have a device that allows you have a wifi hotspot with you wherever you go around the country. Overall, it's not as shocking as people might think it is and there are many services that people may find that is similar to what any developed nation has in their own country. I would recommend people do learn some basic Japanese before you come though, a little bit of knowledge of the language does go a long way to help you out as well. Japan is really a beautiful country that I highly recommend people to visit at least once in their lifetime, I myself have experienced something new every time I was there.

Japan never fails to exceed my expectations, and I've been there twice now. No matter how long you've been there for, or how many times you've travelled there, you will always find something new and somewhat surprising. The one thing that's stood out most both trips is just how many Japanese speak English, and many are surprisingly fluent. You always hear about how Japanese struggle with English, and may not speak any. But, I encountered a surprising amount of really good English, and even in surprising places(like Wakayama).

What has surprised me in down town Osaka is the lack of knowledge of many locals of their area. Even taxi drivers don't know certain streets in the heart of town! I was surprised that being generally well educated people very few can speak basic English. I was surprised at the signage. In the underground arcades, subways, metros the signs are so small. Yes lot's of them but little indication for example how to exit a station! There is an assumption you know where you are going in these tombs of commerce.
The Metro appeared daunting but its not after a couple of rides. The train announcements in English pleasantly surprised me and the staff are really helpful as there are so many exits to choose from. I was surprised as many of these stations are relatively new of the number of long staircases still being used. Does not seem to be handicap friendly or really prepared for the handicap games in Tokyo soon.
Another surprise was that in side streets there are no pavements.
Regarding tourist literature again the print is so small that its off -putting for me with good eyesight.
Minor point and strange to me.
I'm staying at a 3 star hotel with no facilities really. The famous toilet is here but no instructions how to use the darn thing. Breakfast is served in the adjoining restaurant. It is a quite, serious and solemn affair. It is repetitive, a choice of two very small Japanese dishes which are tasty but not adequate. A bit mean really for the price I am paying. I found it so much better in Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi for the same hotel rating. Strange the hotel room had no place for clothes which is disagreeable.
I was surprised considering Osaka is seeking overseas tourists and goes to much trouble welcoming them in their publicity that my famous hotel does not have one english speaking TV channel. That is very rare in my travel experiences.
In December I was surprised how few foreign western tourists there are here. No Africans or arabs noted. Where are they hiding?
I was happy to find the likes of Bic Camera had a small selection of the famous rice cookers and constant hot water distributors tax free with european voltage.
I think many social & cultural experiences still need to occur here. They are still very very insular and, despite technology advanced, backward looking in many ways.
The shops containing hundred of gaming machines surprised me. The amount of specially young women in the metro just thumbing through photo of their mobile phones no stop or playing silly games. Do they have normal lives I ask myself?
I found many of the girls were pretty or attractive. They dress rather classic and present very well. They hair cut nicely, discreet make up, often cute wearing cute berrrys. They look very sweet. Also good to see very very few women smoking as opposed to, say, France. The younger men often have bizarre hairstyles and many look just "goofy" to me.
I guess many will disagree with bits of what I have commented on. Another good thing I finally found a super small family run shop near BIC in Namba selling excellent made in Japan JINBEI for just $25 !

    • @GORO911
      @GORO911 5 ปีที่แล้ว

*"I found many of the girls were pretty or attractive"*
wonder why i barely see any attractive Japanese girl in any of the videos interviewing japanese girls in the streets.
Also, what is the deal with them never fixing their teeth ??!
*"good to see very very few women smoking as opposed to, say, France"*
the only foreign country i have traveled to was France, it really struck me how the number of smoking women outnumbered men.

It's pretty bad compared to other countries lol. It's very difficult to order things in restaurants if you don't know Japanese, aside from pointing at pictures. But I also met a few Japanese people that knew perfect English as well. I've found most of the people working in customer service don't know English, and just normal people on the streets seem to know some English. The thing with Japan though is that most things are written in English too, so that's a huge improvement over other non-speaking English countries.

Polite society is revealed in these Japan vids. On American TV, street walking public never passes up the opportunity to photo-bomb the camera or act like jerks to an annoying point. Not so in Japan -hardly any of the bystanders or pedestrians even slow down to look at the interviewer or like what's going on?

I think it's kind of a habit we tend to get when introducing ourselves to other Americans as there are certain expectations about people from different states. I agree that it is a bad habit though. Many will interpret it as arrogance, but keep in mind that it's not an intentional snub in most cases.

Maybe it's because I'm American, but I think that's a very common way for people to introduce themselves. Even Japanese people sometimes introduce themselves that way by saying I'm from Osaka or Kyoto. I've talked to people from Brazil and sometimes they throw out the name of the city or the region they're from instead of saying Brazil. This happens to me so often I don't even blink an eye in surprise anymore lol.

Yeah I didn't think of that but that's right the US is such a big country. For me it's obvious, if I am in a foreign land I won't say "Hey I'm from Nancy, Lorraine" but I understand better why you do that

When you are in a store in Japan be sure to ask the salesperson, "How much is that in REAL money." No matter what price she gives, just say, "You don't understand, we're AMERICANS, we get a discount." They love that. They laugh and laugh.

Kinda have to remember that alot of practicality is drawn in Anime backgrounds.
Various animators and artist gather they're references from local locations, and pretty much draw a copy of a place in anime form.

      非英語圏の人達は、発音や文法がめちゃくちゃだろうが、とりあえず通じればいいだろうという考え。
      逆に日本人は、相手がどう思っているのか気にするあまり、完璧に覚えようとする。
      しかし日本人同士では、完璧に日本語を発音している人は少ない。
      とくに「う」は適当で、おはよー、おとーさん、のように、うをきちんと発音しない。
      だから英語も、それでいいんだよ。

    • @morisoba2550
      @morisoba2550 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mimi-16-papa いや、海外で日本人が英語を話すのを沢山見聞きしましたが「とりあえず通じればいい」という結果になるのは同じです。
      完璧に日本語を発音している人は少ない?と言われますが、どの言語でも実際に話される発音は省略されたり変化します。 例えば英語だと Little はリル、Water はワラ、want to はワナ、got to はガラに近い発音になります。 日本語でも、島はShma、飛鳥はAskaと発音されていると思います。 日本語の母音はしばしば弱音化したり発音が省略されており、アナウンサーが話す発音を聞いてもそうなっています。
