Could that big magnet looking thing be a train coupler that attached the cars together and to the train so it could pull the coal cars ? If that's what it is they were usually like around a 2" round coupler probably 16 or 18"long. They broke after being used alot. That one you got is square but it's possible that's what it was just broke in half.
