If a fish thinks the bioluminescent lure may be food, then it stands to reason that elsewhere, there is bioluminescent food. But what kind of prey species would advertise itself like that? Or is it just that the fish find the glowing lure hypnotically irresistible? Surely fish - and especially squid (being smart) - would learn to ignore glowing lures, if they never turn out to be food.

    • @bosfbanksy7673

some creatures probably mistake it as some like small fish that a light has reflected unto. In the vast sea, it will be very difficult to spot your prey especially when it can be around your surroundings. So some use the sun's reflection as an easy spotter to find the prey immediately. Its the creature's natural instinct to think that something bright is easily to spot and chase it, especially when it is in the darkness where you have to rely into bumping into something to eat it

    • @silasprins3861

Think of this, if something big eats something smaller, that hopes to use its lure to catch its own prey, but risks attracting something that can eat it. Bioluminescent lures ARE prey, its all a matter of scale.
