Hi thanks for this video. I have a cheap projector a few years old. I think it will be good to try some projection mapping on it after watching this video. I actually want to project simple icons/lines onto a shape so having it look a bit grainy etc might add to a retro feel!
We've got a couple videos about this. I'll put the links below. Also if you're looking to create a computer specification in a professional setting, we have a very comprehensive course in The HQ PRO dedicated to computer hardware and specifications.
I'm new to projection mapping and these different softwares. I've been struggling to find a real-time playback software to pre-vis virtual productions. I have foundational knowledge of Blender, which I love for vis. So is Geopix like a real-time visualiser and virtual production program that integrates with Touchdesigner? Looks like such a valuable tool in this commmunity and it's opensource which is amazing. I see loads of companies offering pre-vis software are charging an arm and a leg via a subscription model which is yuk. Thanks so much for your generosity. I'm very interested in projection mapping Houdini visual effects. Is it possible to integrate Houdini in a live setting? For example - Houdini procedually generates artwork based on weather data. If I want to projection map these artwork visuals, let's say a new rendered image every day, do you know if this all works in concert with Touchdesigner and Geopix? Sorry I'm not clued up on Houdini, so I'm prob missinng some basic info. Another scenario - A projection mapped immersive environment - the Houdini liquid simulation that's projected changes form based on movement from a Kinect. How do I go about that?
To expand more on what I'm going for - From what I've seen from Touchdesigner - you create fairly simple looking graphics that can be played back in real-time - awesome. Though I'd like to design more dense, realistic and higher bit-rate videos and project them. I assume that's impossible in real-time due to the bit-rate size?, so I suppose I can export from Houdini as a video and import into Geopix for projection mapping and virtual production? I can add lights and lasers into the virtual scene and can that playback in real-time from DMX lights and laser in real world?
@@taunado Thanks for the great questions and info about what you're looking for. I'll try to quickly answer them all! GeoPix is actually a full on "LED application", in that it can generate/playback content (or receive content via Spout/NDI), it can deal with the the actual channel assignments and preparing all the data for the LEDs, it then can output all of that data directly to the LEDs, and on top of it all it has a really excellent previz environment. The whole application is built with TouchDesigner but you don't need to know how to use TouchDesigner to use GeoPix. It's standalone in that sense (unless you wanted to get under the hood).
@@taunado In terms of projection mapping with Houdini, you certainly could do something like that, and the usual route is to either render from the viewer perspective the content so you can output it through TouchDesigner using KantanMapper (a mapping tool built in), or you can go the road of creating a 3D model of the object you're mapping, generate UVs, do all of the content on the UV, render it, send it to TouchDesigner and use CamSchnappr (another mapping tool in TouchDesigner) to reproject that 3d scene onto the real world scene. We have a pretty comprehensive projection mapping workshop in The HQ PRO, I'd highly recommend checking it out as it'll help you with a lot of this stuff. Houdini as a tool overall though often struggles in real-time, usually people render out the content as video files and play it back in TouchDesigner. For fluid simulations you could do them in TouchDesigner or Notch or Unreal, which are better suited for real-time content generation that can feed into a projection mapping setup.
@@taunado Your second comment is more of the road that most folks would take, which is rendering out of Houdini as video files, then bring it into your mapping software (like TouchDesigner). GeoPix could handle the LEDs, we'd have to confirm if you can output projector outputs as well from it, if you wanted to reach out to Lucas on geopix.io he could definitely confirm that for you. You may also want to look at Unreal and Notch, as they've become the tools a lot of folks are using to do those dense Houdini-style simulations in real time so that you won't even need to render anything.

Great brains jam!
Thanks, Francesco! Lucas is definitely a top talent and great to chat with.
Super awesome thankyou for the tut!!!
Hi, I'm beginning with TD. Thanks for all the valuable info. Could you please share some light on the hardware PC configuration needed for running TD.
