    Grew up tinkering with Linux but never really understood it. Bought a laptop that came with Windows 10 and after a year of this, I really missed how uncluttered Linux always was. Working my way back into the Linux scene and hope I'll be able to understand it now that I'm a bit older.
    Thanks for the video!

    1:10 no...ya don't have to open your terminal do update your Linux Mint system.
    There is a shield looking icon towards the far right of the panel that does the same thing and it's a GUI deal ( which basic and intermediate winturd of users will more appreciate dealing with seeing as hie Linux beginners, chance are, might not be friendly with a console or cmd prompt looking deal.)

    Just a heads up, and maybe a small gripe of mine, but you no longer need to issue 'apt-get' although it still works. Now, it's just 'sudo apt install.'

    • @motoryzen
      @motoryzen ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but dual booting Linux and winturd from the same drive presents a rabbit hole of possible problems..
      One of which is inevitable that a windows update can measure something involving the Linux booting partition.
      You're safer just installing the Linux distro into a separate drive AND while the windows drive is completely disconnected.

    1:34 to 1:44 sudo apt-get update as well as sudo apt update will NOT update your system in and of ONLY doing just one of those commands.
    It actually just LOOKS for available updates given whatever software sources your Ubuntu or debian based distro is already set to look from.
    you still have to issue another command to tell it to download and install such updates.
    this is another reason why the beginner Linux user is better off using the GUI to update that way he or she SEES up front when launching it or clicking on the refresh button what is available and knows it isn't just auto downloaded and installed yet.
    Clarity..ya need to work on understanding Linux commands better

      Mint has a nice gui that the creator of this video didn't really utilize very well, although he had demonstrated basic Linux command line commands rather well.

    • @motoryzen
      @motoryzen ปีที่แล้ว

      1. That market share number couldn't be more inaccurate than if creepy pedo joe Biden said it so.
      The actual number is really more like 9 percent.
      And ya DONT have a be a terminal wizard to use Linux
      This is 2022( and even if it was 2020.. I would still say the same thing)..not 2002.
      Just because this videos narrator choose to use the terminal to run the update command ( and he was wrong anyways... sudo apt-get update as well as simply sudo apt update DOESN'T download and install updates automatically..it LOOKS for updates to packages that are available via the software sources aka repositories your Linux distro is setup to use OOTB unless you chance them)

  • @SummerSn0w
    @SummerSn0w 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Why didn't you use any of the included GUI tools to update or install plugins initially? The repo add tool? The package manager? You're skipping over what makes mint mint smh. This is all so much more complicated that it need to be. What's worse is by the end you end up using some of them! Woooooow

    Why would you tell someone to use the terminal in Linux Mint, it's a distro for people that don't want to use the terminal. If someone's that way inclined they'll find the terminal themselves and they probably don't need to watch this kind of video.

    • @motoryzen
      @motoryzen ปีที่แล้ว

      sudo apt-get update or sudo apt update only LOOKS for available packages or package updates ..the video narrator here was wrong in claiming it auto downloads and installs them
      That's sudo apt install update -yy or something like that..possible sudo apt upgrade -yy
      you're better off using the GUI update manager so you can more easily see what you're doing BEFORE actually doing it .

    • @ericofire
      @ericofire 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol, oh no! not 15 minutes of popping in commands to get initial setup done. it's not like windows has any of that! on windows you only need to
      -update after install
      -install core drivers
      -update drivers
      -install graphics drivers
      -update graphics drivers
      -restart
      -uninstall bloatware individually
      -setup antivirus or defender
      -setup limited user account
      -setup permissions
      -setup startup programs
      -setup privacy preferences
      -defrag hdd
      -restart again
      and thats only what you pretty much NEED to do. if you skip any of those, then you almost certainly have a worse end user experience than somebody who does.
      on top of that, if you want office, you have to pay for and then install it.
      If you have multiple monitors, youll want to buy and install display fusion.
      and lets not even get started with the abysmal lack of proper networking software default on windows. gotta hunt that down too
      I have my own personal gripes with certain things about linux, and i totally get that its not for everybody. but if you think this setup is worse than a windows pc, you're delusional. if you're gonna bitch, at least pick something that's actually true. you really dont have to try hard to poke holes in linux distros. all of them have plenty of disadvantages
