This is the song that changed my life. I was 11 years old in 1985 when I first heard it and I could not believe what I was hearing. The studio version is literally out of this world. Pure magic... Timeless...

U2 has never been about how beautifull bono's voice is . It's about the effort he puts in his vocals during live performances. I absolutely respect that.
His voice is fine. What I miss in his singing is the energy, passion and intensity he used to have.
I was at the SLC concert last week and was holding my breath for this song and it never happened. Arguably this is their most poetic/brilliant song ever written. The words and music are so complementary that you wonder how the song came together.
People complain about how doesn't sound good anymore are ignorant. Bonos voice has changed but it is still the most amazing voice ever
I would have to say this is their absolute best song of all time! It just creates such an emotion from me that I can't even describe.

Never really listened to this song before this concert. Loved the live version and it has become one of my favorites of theirs.
Actually this song was never done until now because it was not feasible due to technology. We got to enjoy it live as a rare treat.
James Natale This song was played on the unforgettable fire tour and joshua tree tour. they played it when i saw them on the JT tour in '87 in san francisco. it's also on the JT live concert from paris DVD that came with the JT remastered CD deluxe set. I think they stopped doing it for a long time because it's very difficult to sing, as evidenced by this performance.
Joey Danbom Wow. Thanks. I was told it was not possible because the Edge could not play more than one instrument at a time and they did not have the technology at the time to play it live. Cool you got to hear it then. Took me until 2009. Better late than never. Hope Bono's elbow heals so he can pick up guitar again.

LenaMoura20 , you are correct! switching from falsetto and back, high notes, low notes.. crazy! for the 360 tour version, he simplified the "stay tonight, in the light" vocal lines to avoid that high falsetto transition.

Steve Secor That only tells you more about them. Yes, sad as it is an incredible song only touch not enough. However, remember, others may be unlucky to lack the knowledge of the complexity of this song. They are just unfortunate to have known the history or anything that gives us understanding and meaning to the song. We know what it means.You and I and many others are united souls to enjoy this song. Hope many others join. Thumbs down means nothing for the mass of us. But good to point it out in this quiet world. What on earth did he do to the lyrics at "stay this time..." and beyond? This song came out when I was in the 7th grade and it is almost sacred to me, along with Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill. I will never understand why he didn't sing those lyrics but I'm still grateful they re-introduced the song in their recent concerts. If you want to be truly moved, look up this song U2 Live in Paris July 1987. Truly their best performance of this song, EVER.
i am such a big fan of U2, saw them several times @ Torhout/Werchter in Belgium in the 80's and 360 tour and Joshua tree tour in Brussels... and since i first heard this really magnificant composition, it has allways been my favorite song... now i am 50 years (very old) it still is :) played it so many times in the car and @ home even my children can sing it :))

I think this song is right up there with Where the Streets Have No Name, both have fantastic intros, choruses and outros, I remember my ICT teacher saying he liked U2 once, and when I told him I was a fan he asked me If I could think of a better song than WTSHNN, at the time I said Sunday Bloody Sunday which is also a fantastic song, but if I went back to him now I would undoubtly say The Unforgettable Fire, I really love this song that much, but dont get me wrong this is one of the worlds best.

It sould not be difficult for them to perform their own songs: they made it. Ive seen covers better with cheap equipment than this. They need to stoo cheating tge audience with just those 3 instruments, its wasnt just 3 instruments that made the original song. They have gotten better tho.

People always have a go at u2. I first saw them live at Murray field stadium Edinburgh. Back in the mid 80s. And then in Munich. I don’t listen to them much now but there still selling out stadiums. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.
