  • Some aquatic turtles will normally shed their scutes. In captivity, the process occurs naturally providing they have a proper basking spot at the correct temperatures, proper UVB, proper water conditions and diet.
    Without proper conditions, being met, aquatic turtles can retain their scutes which can cause future problems with bacteria and algae growth.

    How is Ethel doing? Is her shell hardening out? We need an update :)

    • @chelonianranch
      @chelonianranch  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Coincidentally enough, Ethel had a vet visit today. She’s growing quicker than her shell can harden which is resulting in pressure on the outer edges of her shell. The vet is putting her on a liquid calcium to take orally, and we are increasing or UVB from 12 hours a day to 14 hours a day. I will make an update video on her care and post it soon.

      @@chelonianranch Thanks for the update, much appreciated. As we move into spring and summer, and she finally gets to enjoy the outdoor life, Ethel will turn into a healthy girl, fingers crossed. This is a challenging time of year for us tortoise keepers in northern latitudes, even with healthy, properly raised and acclimated animals.

      Unfortunately, Ethel passed away. She had a bladder stone, the size of a softball inside, and they were not able to remove it in time.

    I have a rescue turtle who was living in filth. I’ve had her for two weeks and she’s shedding. She’s 18 years old. Is this normal that she’s shedding because I thought she was funny grown?

    • @chelonianranch
      @chelonianranch  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s most likely normal. If you see fresh new scutes under the ones shedding, then it’s a good thing. Because the turtle was previously living in filth, it is possible that she didn’t grow properly, and now that she’s in your care, she’s getting the chance to.

    Have to be very careful the shell is part of their skeleton and they feel pain through them.

    • @chelonianranch
      @chelonianranch  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are correct. In this situation, the retained keratin scutes where in need of removal, and the scutes themselves do not have blood or nerve endings. Removing the scutes before they are ready, will cause pain and damage though, so best not to do it unless you’re certain they are ready.

    • @J7Handle
      @J7Handle ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chelonianranch Our skin is also basically just keratin on the outermost layer, right? So these scutes are also just the outermost layer of skin that can be safely removed, but just like our skin, if you remove a layer too soon, the fresh skin underneath will bleed and cause pain, dry out and split and all sorts of nasty stuff.

    My painted turtle had improper lighting and now seems to have shell rot but some parts of the shell looks like there is at least 5 layers of shell but they aren’t coming off. Any idea on how to fix it?

    • @chelonianranch
      @chelonianranch  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry to hear about the condition of your painted turtle. Does the turtle have adequate basking area to get completely out of the water? What is the turtles diet? More importantly, I could probably help if I saw a picture of the turtle and the condition it’s in. If you go to my website, there’s a contact me page and you can email me. www.chelonianranch.com

    Given the proper light and water quality, is there any additional treatment that would help? I over filter my tank/keep up with cleaning and water changes, and use standard reptile uva and uvb bulbs already. Still have the retained scutes on my midland painted turtle

    • @chelonianranch
      @chelonianranch  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A basking area is essential. Make sure there is a platform or area for them to get completely out of the water to dry off. I put a 100watt basking bulb above my platform and I do not use water heaters. Makes them get out of the water to warm up and bask.
