Just some things to consider, Elvis mother Gladys died at 46 years young, Vernon his father was 63. Gladys mother and father, Robert Lee Smith and Octavia L. Mansell (Doll) died respectively at 54 and 61 years of age. Doll had tuberculosis for most of her life and was bedridden after delivering her first child.
Admittedly Vernon parents lived longer with Minnie Mae outliving them all to a grand old age of 90, with Jesse D. Passing at 77. My point is Gladys gene pool would of had a bearing on Elvis. Certainly he very much resembled Gladys in his later years with his dwindling health, Eerily so.
Yes he became drug dependent and he had made himself desperately ill by 1977, much of this to my mind because he was hurting, he wasn’t a well man. Many will argue that this was brought about by his drug usage but what precipitated that drug use in the first place ? Yes it may have started in service by taking pills to stay awake while on night manoeuvres and we know Elvis was an insomniac, something that plagued him all his life. But I genuinely believe his increased intake when it became a major concern from ‘72 onwards was brought on by serious health issues, and spiralled out of control from there.
With glaucoma, the bouts of hepatitis, steroids which distorted his face, idiopathic mega colon which distended his abdomen, high blood pressure, damaged liver and enlarged heart. . . all of which were exasperated by his increasing drug use. And finally, perhaps a polypharmacy of sufficient proportions to terminate his life.
Whatever the reasons for his death, we can only speculate...but I will never believe Elvis Presley predominantly took drugs because he liked to get Messed up. It runs deeper than that. Some will inevitably disagree but it’s just another side of the coin to consider.
    TCB

I'm sorry if I upset a few people out there but I stand by my thoughts on this matter. A few others have also said about the same thing and I thank you for feeling that Red And Sonny never had Elvis ' s best interest at heart. It was wrong to write that book, it did not change anything to make things better for Elvis; it only shoved Elvis into a deeper depression. If it's so terrible of me to judge these men so harsly because they are not here to defend themselves, well Elvis can't defend himself and yet he continues to be judged . Elvis is not responsible on his own. For every person whom has taken drugs there has to be someone else to blame. I along with a couple more people agreed that "The Army" started Elvis on the pills to keep him awake to do his army maneuvers and that caused him to not be able to sleep; so he had to take pills to sleep. It continued for too long to turn him around so it got to a point where it was too late for Elvis because the family was afraid to do anything about it. Elvis just didn't trust anyone and was very stubborn. Anyway ; I thank the couple of people that agreed with me about it being wrong to write the book and just wanted to see if they could make a buck out of it. Regards of the intention it was worthless in the long run. The words in this book., backfired on them. Why can't we all just focus on the good Elvis did for everyone. I never thought he had any problems like this for a long time. Watching him on that stage performing , he could sing with great passion and so heartfelt , he had more love for other people than most of us could dream of. The bad stuff is over and done please can we just keep it in the past and move on. I can let things go if others are willing to try and remember the good in him. I believe he is in heaven singing in GOD'S kingdom with the holy Angels. Regardless of your bad choices in life , you were still a human being . Your songs and your angelic voice will inspire me for ax long as I breath. When my time comes , I hope it's like they say it is because I need to know why you refused to believe you had a problem and let the people who could , help you get better, maybe you would possibly be here with us today. I have always heard that everything happens for a reason and you and only you know what you were going through. Hope you're at peace with yourself so now you can continue to rest easy. You have no more worries. God bless your soul **😇😇😇

Well put. I would argue that the "thing" which precipitated the drug abuse was not simply pain or depression - but an excessive personality borne of going from pauper to king. Also, hypertension is a killer. It twists your colon and enlarges your heart. If treated by quacks and yes-men - you're doomed.

When I was a teenager, I thought Elvis was perfect and I loved him!
Now as an adult, I know that Elvis was just a human with the same ‘human-ness’ we all have and I still love him...maybe even more so because look at all he did, look at his generosity, look at the love he had for mankind, look at his amazing talent.....despite the fact that he was simply human. So thank you Spa Guy for even doing those videos that speak of a side of Elvis that we wish didn’t exist....it just makes him more real! TRUE fans can know all of Elvis and will STILL love him!

Billy even tried to get Elvis to get clean. But I also believe Elvis was in a bad depression and that was his way of escaping all the pressure he had on him. The guys even said when he went to Hawaii he didn't take the drugs and he was happiest there. He had a deep loneliness, depression and so much responsibility of supporting so many people.

Good video and I love Red and Sonny, too, and I have talked to every one of them at some point and the truth of the matter is the book should NOT have been written. While Patty Parry and others in the Elvis entourage believed the book is what killed Elvis and when you look at the fact that Elvis never took to the stage again after the book was written, it's pretty strong evidence of that fact, though I don't believe Elvis killed himself, either. His death, much like he, still remains a mystery while I tend to think there is a lot to the seizure theory as drug overdoses aren't violent as Elvis' death so sadly was. So, if Red and Sonny were to answer the question more honestly, they simply should have said "we wrote the book because we were out of work and we needed the money and we also hoped, seeing it, Elvis would turn around." Though, quite honestly, I can say that I would never have written a book that salcious about any close friend, for any reason, though it's my understanding, too, that Dunleavy took advantage of them.
It's true, too, that Red, Sonny and Dr. Nick et al. tried to get Elvis to cut the pills many times. And, it's also true that they wrote the book because they were pissed off at Elvis and needed the money. It needn't be one or the other. Elvis also handled their firings wrong, though given some of the lawsuits with Red and Sonny getting a little too rough, it's understandable. While Elvis would have taken them back and they didn't need to write the book as Red's phone call with Elvis shows. Elvis loved them and they loved him, and you are correct, Ghanem just gave Elvis what he wanted, when he wanted and was a criminal. Dr. Nick, on the other hand - should be applauded - as he absolutely did his best to control a very, very difficult situation.
Biggest lesson here, I believe, is how important COMMUNICATION IS. Elvis and Red just got separated by the pressures of show business, etc., and we sadly all know the end. But, in the end, too, no one has ever given the world more joy than Elvis Presley!!!

When an unsophisticated person tells an MD i feel bad and the MD says here, take this you will feel better. The patient has no responsibility for the outcome. Elvis was a poor country boy that became the most important entertainer in the world but he was still just a poor country boy that believed Dr's would have is best interest in mind. Just look at the opioid crisis going on now. It is generally believed that the medical profession is responsible. As we get older we are not suppose to feel as good. Many doctors' egos don't allow them to tell their patients this. Elvis had health issues he needed to work and here is these big ego doctors saying i can make you feel better. Dr. Nick was close to it and tried to pull Elvis back but he was just to far gone and too many MD's ready to step in and say i can make you feel better. Everybody says Elvis was anti drug, to Elvis it was medicine after all a Dr prescribed it. Great video!

Only shoved him deeper Into his depressing. It's just so sad that he could not see that he a problem so he refused any help offered to him. Please , can we just focus on the good he did for us. He brought us great entertainment and had the voice of an angel. Regardless of his personal life, Elvis was a good man whom loved the Lord and maybe he was trying to ask for forgiveness for his sins through his Gospel songs. Either way he will always be number 1 to me . Whether people realize it or not I believe our world was a little better off having him be in it. ☺ 😃 RI P My dear Elvis , love , peace, and joy!!☺☺

Donna, I am an Elvis fan as well and am sad that he passed.. I don't think anyone is upset with you I think we are all sad that someone we thought so much of died when we believe he could have been saved.. Rehab was not as prevelent then as it is now and the stigma of drug addiction was huge then and not so much now.. If Elvis was alive today dealing with drugs I think the outcome may have been different.. All I am saying is people are hating on some of the people involved even 40 years later.. I don't really know what happened and neither does anyone else that was not there. So let's say that Red, Sonny & Dave did do this terrible book in a malicious way I don't think it is fair to only remember them for that one act but to remember them for their overall body of work.. They were with Elvis for years and years and did things to help him and were good and loyal to him but the only thing people choose to remember is the one time they feel that they were not loyal.. I choose to remember the 99.9999% that they were good to him.. Thanks for watching, Spa Guy

Thanks for replying back to me, I really do enjoy your stories that you bring to us ; but I had first heard about this book a while back from a video that a radio D J had was talking about it and in his opinion , thought it was necessary, but I feel these guys went to far. I don't remember the D J 's name. So this subject has been a touchy one ever since. It just surprised me when you agreed with way they handled the situation. But if you noticed , I am not the only one who feels these guys did Elvis wrong. I've had a difficult time accepting that Elvis even had these issues. I've loved him since I was about 9 . I knew nothing about his drug use then. Just fell for him, great looks and could sing, from watching his movies. Just wish he could have gotten the help he needed back then. The day the radio announced that he had died, I was upset and cried like a baby for days ahead. I had just gotten married on the 5th day of August that same year; I was 18 at that time. I still get emotional about Elvis. Today I've been just too overwhelmed by all of this. I just want to remember the good person that he was and the love he had for everyone , but I definitely realize that would not have been someone you'd want to cross. I aways believe that he had things going on inside that maybe wasn't there until after his mother had passed. He was used and took for granted also and many other health problems that might have contributed to his early death as well. Bad health , the pills, depression, the pressure he felt from this career he chose. Colonel Parker took his money , to pay his gambling debts. The people he trusted most let him down at least some of the time. Elvis was misunderstood . He had a great sense of humor. Elvis will always mean the world to me. Thanks again Spa Guy for understanding my frustration in all of this .😐😐

I too agree with Donna on this. Those guys new what that book would hurt Elvis to the core of his being, after all they were a few he had selected to let get to no him so well or should have known him probably in some ways more than anyone cause they were there with him everywhere. There is not one doubt in my mind that they knew what they were doing an trying to help him was not one of them. I just don't see how anyone could beleive that. All the Elvis fans that new even the littlest things about him knew how much he loved his fans am strived to be the best for them. Everything he did mostly he thought of them an what they thought of him. He TRULY LOVED ALL HIS FANS AN WAS THE MOST HUMBLE PERSON EVER TO TURN OUT TO BE THE BIGGEST ENTAINER OF ALL TIMES. He worried what they thought of him an this book that those BACK STABBERS WROTE ABOUT HIM WAS NOTHING BUT A COLD, COLD VENGEFUL THING THEY DID TO HIM BECAUSE HE DIDN'T DO WHAT THEY SAID IN STEAD HE FIRED THEM FOR ACTING LIKE EVERYTHING WAS ALL HIS FAULT. just where were these so called friends when they were feeling like the big men that did the same things he was doing an having fun being the most important ones in his entorouge for many many years. why didn't they say no to the drugs they were taking. cause they needed them to keep up with HIM. Even though Elvis had fame an money his money went to paying all the bills that helped keep them around. ELVIS WAS A WONDERFUL, HUMBLE, RESPECTFUL, KIND, SWEET, GOOD HEARTED MAN THAT WAS USED OVER AN OVER BY THE PEOPLE HE THOUGHT HAD HIS BACK. HE made sure his ppl were took good care of an I'm sure if he got upset an lashed out at some of them they had it coming, after all I really don't think his mafia knew just how hard it was to be ELVIS cause most of the time he put on a happy face. in the end the last few years of his life he grew very weary of the way he was having to carry everyone but he was just to kind hearted to thin some out an didn't want them talking about him LIKE THEY DID ANYWAY . HE WAS TIRED AND KNEW HE WAS AT THE END OF HIS ROPE BUT DIDN'T WANT TO LET HIS FANS DOWN. HE WAS ALREADY WORRIED WHAT WAS BEING SAID ABOUT HIS WEIGHT AN WHEN HE FOUND OUT ABOUT THAT BOOK IT. JUST BROKE HIM. AN TO MAKE IT EVEN WORSE THEY HAD THE GALL TO TELL HIS FANS THEY WROTE IT TO GIVE HIM A WAKE UP CALL. THEY DID IT FOR THEMSELVES AN NO ONE ELSE. THEY WERE NO LONGER ON THE PAYROLL AN DIDN'T GET THOSE FRINGE BENEFITS AMORE. IN OTHER WORDS THE BIG RIDE WITH HIM WAS OVER FOR THEM. WHO CALLS A PERSON THAT TRUST THEM WITH HIS LIFE THEIR FREIND AND CAN SAY THAT BOOK WAS WRITTEN REVEALING SOME THINGS HE NEVER THOUGHT THEY WOULD TELL CAUSE HE HAD TRUSTED THEM FOR SO LONG , WOULD NOT DESTROY HIS WILL TO KEEP GOING. ELVIS GOT MIXED UP WITH THE WRONG PEOPLE FOR SURE AND THOSE THAT WROTE THAT TELL ALL BOOK WAS THE WORST. AN IF THEY WERE EVER SO GOOD TO HIM AN ONLY WANTED WHAT WAS BEST FOR HIM, WHY DID THEY NOT HELP HIM TO SEE THE MISTAKE IN DRS AN THE PILLS THAT WERE TAKING OVER ALL THOSE MANY YEARS AGO. WHY DID THEY DO THEM WITH HIM, THEY NEW HE WAS DOING THEM TO MUCH AN TO LONG BUT THEY JUMPED IN THERE AN RODE THAT TRAIN WITH HIM. SO SORRY THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT BOOK WAS TO HELP HIM IT WAS MEANT TO DO EXACTLY WHAT IT DID. PUT ELVIS IN A DEEP DEPRESSION ALONG WITH THE WEIGHT GAIN HE WAS DEALING WITH AN MADE SURE THEY LINED THERE POCKETS WITH MONEY. IM SORRY BILLY BUT THIS TIME U R WRONG AN I JUST DONT SEE HOW U COULD POSSIBLY THINK THEY WERE TRYING TO HELP. TRY PUTTING THE SHOE ON THE OTHER FOOT. WOULD U THINK TRUTHFULLY THAT A FREIND U HAD TRUSTED SO LONG WOULD DO SUCH A MEAN AN CRUEL THING TO U. I THINK ELVIS SHOWED THE KIND OF GREAT MAN HE WAS BY NOT RETALIATING AGAINST THEM. IF IT HAD BEEN ME I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE MADE SURE THEY LOST EVERYTHING POSSIBLE. BUT HE ONLY SHOWED THEM WHAT A GREAT PERSON HE TRULY WAS. WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THEY WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT AFTER ALL THEY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN HIM ALMOST AS WELL AS HE DID, ESPECIALLY RED WEST THEY WENT ALMOST FROM CHILDHOOD AS FREINDS. THATS A LONG TIME. I DO HOWEVER THINK THAT RED WAS NOT THE LEADER IN THAT, BUT STILL SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER. SORRY SO LONG. I DO ENJOY YOU MR. SPA GUY I WATCH ALL UR WORK. LOVE UR SINGING ALSO.

It could be argued that everyone around Elvis was an 'enabler', including his own family.
But those were different times when it was almost socially acceptable or even fashionable to be taking medication. Sleeping pills were being innocently used by millions of people and were readily prescribed by doctors across the world. My parents had them in their medicine cabinet and today admit that their doctors prescribed them at the slightest complaint. Almost everyone around Elvis was taking such medication.
With Elvis, his performance schedule as arranged by his manager (Tom Parker) led to the increased use of various medical support to sleep and then to be up and strong enough for the next evening and then night's concerts. Over a period of time Elvis became heavily dependent - and so a victim. Dependency is such a serious medical and psychological issue that in most cases the victim should not be directly blamed. Medical doctors, including Ghanem, benefited directly and indirectly from Elvis Presley's vulnerability. Everybody knew it, including Tom Parker and Vernon Presley! The Wests knew it and were vocal about it too.
An addict is not necessarily a bad person, and in most cases he or she is a vulnerable victim. With Elvis, there were no Betty Ford rehab clinics or such back then. The three bodyguards had their reasons and writing a retaliatory book to expose a world famous superstar may enrich them and the authors but it will not cure addiction. In Elvis' case, the knowledge of the sensationalistic book's impending release certainly contributed to worsening his dependency and use of medication to help deaden all emotions. On that last day his body couldn't take it any more.
Life has its ups, downs, twists and turns and is somehow ultimately meaningless. His doctors, entourage and other minders will all be forgotten over time but Elvis Presley's name and work will live on.

The Spa guy has,and is still, doing a huge service for Elvis fans. However, I can't just sit back while a bunch of guys stand around a cemetary telling the world how great the West cousins were. The FACT is they went and wrote a book after their dismissal, for revenge on Elvis/Vernon. They certainly didn't give the profits to charity. No, they kept the money. I read this book whilst Elvis was still alive and it was not a noble effort to save him but a very nasty tabloid type shock jock book. There is no use trying to change history. We all live with the consequences of our actions. The West's were treated badly, and they then betrayed Elvis. That's just the honest truth of the matter.

Sad..things turned out the way they did for Elvis..he got hooked up with the wrong people..I think it was his health problems..his diet..not enough rest..the over prescribing of medicines..the touring..I think all of it had a part to play in his passing away..at a early age..all the doctors..Tom Parker..and many more should have been held accountable.. Elvis..also..could have said no ..too himself..that he didn't need all the pills, injections,.. people have to live by the decisions they make..be it good or bad.. don't get me wrong.. I'm a Elvis fan..but Elvis had a say too in his medical care.

Thanx for another great video Spa Guy. One of the guys definately has a Dutch accent. Dr. Nick was de scape coat but I think he really cared for Elvis. A lot of famous people get caught on alcohol or pills. It's the pressure, in Holland we had a documentary about Elvis' and it was said that Elvis' was the first that people went crazy about, the very first, yes you also had the Beatles but there were four of them, there was only one Elvis and he was the first. They all got their inspiration from him. So al that pressure, expectations, people depending on him. And he already had sleeping problems so that got worse. But a good doctor knows when to stop and look at the health instead of looking at the money. I never feel less about Elvis' for knowing this, he was a human being caught by preditors who caught him Ghanem style.

Elvis did not want help so basically no one could help him.Breaking a drug habit is admitting you yourself are the one responsible for where your are at and willing to get help. He was his own worst enemy ! His choices and choice of lifestyle did him in ! The long tours/hours, prescription drugs, not enough rest and having the pressure to make even more money to keep things going, his divorce/Priscilla and so forth. Red and Sonny West basically thought they were helping Elvis by their tell all book but Elvis felt hurt and betrayed ! Where would all those guys be without Elvis paying the bills ? His only friends were Charlie Hodge and Larry Giller. The doctors should of told him no. Of course his health issues played a part in his early death too. I miss him and do love his music still. Elvis accomplished so much in his lifetime in his music. Thanks Mr. Spa Guy a great video and topic.

Spa guy, I know a guy named John who worked for Landmark Pharmacy in the early 70's. He actually delivered meds to Elvis, sometimes during rehearsals in the main room, a couple other times directly to the suite. He said a couple times Elvis directly answered the door, but mostly to his security people. He said once Elvis walked into the pharmacy by himself, and a couple minutes later his security ran in, out of breath, telling Elvis not to leave them like that again! He said Elvis just laughed at them!! He thought it was the funniest thing!

I have loved Elvis since age 14, and I am now 78. Nothing will deter my love for him, both as a man and a great entertainer. But I am also a realist. Elvis was a man of excesses, from food to women to drugs. He had an addictive personality. His sudden rise to unbelievable fame and fortune from abject poverty was too much for a boy-man to handle. He never really matured fully. I believe he was simply a victim of circumstances, which caused his early death. Also, the book the Wests wrote was not the way to stop Elvis from taking drugs. He was too far gone for that. It only served to exacerbate the problem and humiliate Elvis in the process. In the end, I think Elvis was born under a dark cloud and was doomed from the start, and nothing and no one could have changed his path. Sad but true. RIP Elvis. See you in heaven. my friend. You bring me joy to this day!❤❤❤

Billy I laughed out loud when you did that Christopher Walken imitation! Christopher was born and raised in Astoria, Queens NY, where I’m from! His parents owned a bakery which was there for many, many years and his younger brother ( who looks so much like him) had a small bar next door which he ran in the 80s and 90s...anyway yes you are right, that was a bad impersonation. Lol.
I will say in your defense it’s not the worst I have heard!!

The photo on the book on the bench near Tony Curtis' grave looks like it might be Yogananda. I wish I could see it better but if it is Yogananda, it could possibly be "The Autobiography of a Yogi," which was actually one of Elvis's favorite books! Crazy coincidence if true!! At any rate, I thought Tony Curtis was Jewish. Thanks for sharing Spa Guy, as always. You do a fantastic job with these vids.

It's not honesty when this bunch are trying to justify the betrayal the West's did to Elvis that caused him so much heartache in his last weeks. They did it for the Judas money. All their words since have been trying to retrospectively change the facts.

Unfortunately it happens to super stars all of the time. There's a self destruct element to their personality that finally catches up with them. It could be as simple as a deathly fear of failure and falling from the top. They live with trouble souls and internally live their lives lost or constantly unfulfilled. I give the stars like Mick Jagger, Jack Nicholson, Sean Connery, and many more aging people, so much credit for finding their way personally through life, through the tough times as well as the glorious times

  • @nutrianirvana6823

I remember what David Stanley (I think it was David?) when Geraldo talked to him, he said that in the beginning he thought Dr Ghanem really cared for Elvis but as time passed, he started giving him whatever drugs he wanted. I've loved EP my entire life BUT he was not a god. He was very human, and he made mistakes as we all do. In fairness, he was in failing health and dealt with so many serious health issues which necessitated the use of certain drugs. However, he overindulged in the sedatives, barbiturates, opiates, amphetamines, and sleep meds, that cannot be disputed. I've always felt that Dr Nick got somewhat of a bad rap, though, he did overprescribe controlled substances for his patients. If his book is to be believed (The King and Dr Nick), he said that he put Elvis on a strict regimen of medications and when Elvis followed it to the letter, he wasn't overmedicated. He admitted that Elvis was not always a compliant patient which made his job extremely difficult. But it was clear to everyone that when Elvis was cared for by Dr Nick on the road, he was always functional and clear-headed. It's such a sad story and I wish it could have turned out differently for Elvis but unfortunately his self-destructive streak won out. Still, his health problems made his life a living hell and caused him so much pain both physical and emotional. This was a great video, Billy. I just came back today to rewatch it. Tighten up and TCB⚡
