    Hey not sure if you'll ever see this, but thank you for posting these videos! My group just wrapped up this campaign and your videos were very helpful! Knowing what did and didn't work well for your table gave me a huge advantage as a new DM. My players are excited to go into the follow up trilogy too. I'm a little bummed I won't have similar videos from you guys to help me out, but I feel much more confident now to handle things on my own.
    Anyway, thanks again! Love the content and your group's vibe. I'll keep my eye out for more content like this!

      Of course we'll see this! It's so good to hear that you enjoy our vibe and our videos are helpful! Hearing that you feel more confident to handle things on your own is even better! It really is the reason we make the videos in the first place! Thank you so much for letting us know 😀
      If you're looking for more from us, a great place to start is our DM Essentials playlist. It's a collection of our thoughts on the core principles of DMing! You can find it on our playlist page and right here...

    I love Josh's suggestion about characters with cartography skill. It's so important to give characters with those weird little niche skills shine.

    I’m currently using wyloch’s armorers tutorials to physically MAKE icespire hold for the finale of my campaign which has otherwise utilised battlemaps made with markers. Thank you guys lots for making this series - it really really assisted in giving me plenty of ideas for my party and we’ve had an excellent time. My party is just at the end of the woodland manse and have just axeholme and dragon barrow left

    Having the snow be difficult terrain feels spot on. The veterans could refuse to leave without seeing the monsters hord maybe with some persuasion they can be convinced to help the party.

    Fantastic suggestions. The inclusion of the players abilities makes the world feel tangible.

    I am getting rid of the Stone Cold Reavers and I made two White halfdragon NPCs (Children of Cryovain) and adding a bunch of white kobolds.

    There's a kind of skill challenge I use that I call a Challenge Bonus. It's good for a number of things, like a burning building or a sinking ship, but my favorite thing to use it for is trying to find something in the wilderness.
    You start with a Challenge Bonus of, say, +8, and you have the heroes roll initiative. The rounds could be in minutes, hours, or even days, but you have them go in order telling you how they try to solve the problem. They roll a skill in a contested roll against the challenge bonus. If they succeed, they bonus drops by one. If they fail, there's no change unless they fail by 5 it more, in which case the bonus goes up. When the challenge bonus is dropped low enough, the heroes succeed.
    It's important to use this in a way where, if they fail, it doesn't mean everyone dies. If they're looking for something and the challenge bonus gets too high, maybe they return to a landmark to reset it. If it's a ship in a storm, the ship gets wrecked but the heroes wash up on shore.
    I use this thing regularly - used it, in fact, when they were searching for the dragon barrow.

    • @alarin612
      @alarin612 ปีที่แล้ว

      Forgot to mention, I give the Change its own turn in the initiative order. This is where the environment makes life hard for the heroes - the burning building burns the heroes, the storm washes someone overboard, the hot sun imposes exhaustion, something like that. You use the Challenge Bonus for the attack roll or to set the DC.
      My favorite thing about this is how it replicates crisis response. As you get things under control, it gets easier. Or, as things get further out of hand, it's harder and harder to resolve the problem.

      This is SUCH good stuff!!! It’s almost like an open-ended lair action kind of thing!

    • @alarin612
      @alarin612 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JNJTabletop Thank you! I lifted the concept from Mutants and Masterminds. I've considered using it for a boss battle - don't give my big on monster hit points, just give him a challenge bonus. And, maybe some consequences for the hero if they fail - line a half-strength attack or cantrip or something. Or, that's when the monster gets to use Legendary Actions. That would help me out because I always forget to use those...
      I think it would make the fight more like a movie boss battle, where the heroes attack and the big villain just sort of responds to each attack.

      @@JNJTabletop I'm glad you mentioned Lair Actions. I hadn't thought of this, but Lair Actions would be a great place to find things the environment can do. Like a White Dragon for a blizzard or a Red Dragon for an escape from a volcano.

      Hmmm yeah, this feels like it would be really nice in a mythic battle like the kind in Mythic Odysseys of Theros

    I started seeding info about Amzar early on. Some of the orcs they killed in various encounters were carrying things from the fortress with her symbol on them. I planned to connect it to drama in Neverwinter, with the Amzarr household wanting to know what happened to their adventurous daughter or something. Game didn't last that long, unfortunately.

    • @JNJTabletop
      @JNJTabletop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhh I hate to hear that the game didn’t last that long but it sounds like you did BRILLIANT job setting this adventure up!

    • @alarin612
      @alarin612 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JNJTabletop Aw, thanks. Very kind of you to say so. I think I also described the orcs as having cold weather clothes in their packs - not worn, but carried. Between that and the stuff with Amzarr's symbol it had my heroes wondering where they came from.

    • @alarin612
      @alarin612 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JNJTabletop Another "seed" I dropped was, I introduced the Stone Cold Reavers while the heroes were still fighting orcs as some mercenaries hired by Phandalin. They weren't nice, but they helped the heroes out a few times on several adventures. Sileene even killed the orcs' leader during a massive battle in the ruins of Conyberry. It made their contribution at the Icespire Hold all the more impactful.
