I've been listening to that voice for 45 years plus and still can't get enough of it .
Bowie's final album, Black Star, was released 2 days before he died. It is an astonishing listen. A brilliant album, with the lyrics reflecting on his life and his battle with the cancer that killed him. Listen to the title track or Lazarus. The video's are a difficult watch.

The dilated pupil came from an accident when he was a child, one of his best friends George Underwood punched Bowie in a fight over a girl and badly damaged it. They remained good friends up to Bowie's death and Underwood even did art work for some of Bowie's album covers

Heroes is about lovers from either sides of the Berlin Wall. His eye condition is a result of a school fight . Also , although his voice is very recognisable, all his songs are so different from each other. All of them worth listening to, to fully appreciate his talent.

@@durv13 It wasn't a pencil though... It was a punch in the eye, but somehow the other boy managed to scratch his eye and it got infected. He had to stay in the hospital for months and the doctors did four surgeries or so to save his eye. The iris (which is a muscle) remained paralyzed in an open position and that is why his pupil was always dilated. He could still see something with that eye, but how much, I don't know. Probably just enough to walk around and not hit anything (see his Halloween Jack character with the eye patch over the good eye).

I'm Afraid of Americans was a collab with Trent Reznor, not Marilyn Manson. He's in the video as well.
'Heroes' is from 1977 and all in all probably his signature song, it was written in Berlin in a studio next to the Berlin wall and he was inspired by a couple he spotted when he looked out of the studio window, they stood next to the wall and kissed. He wondered why they would meet there next to a watchtower instead of some nicer place and so he got the idea for the song. That's at least the official version that you can find on the internet. The incredible guitar on this track is played by Robert Fripp, the frontman and guitar player of the prog rock band King Crimson.
To me Bowie is the GOAT, great to see that you reacted to him. Please do more.
And you noticed his eyes on the cover. He got two different-coloured eyes due to a condition called anisocoria. His left pupil was permanently dilated so that's not an effect that they thought of for the cover, but due to how he looked for real.
The pose he's doing on the cover is inspired by a painting by Erich Heckels called 'Roquairol'.

I was very lucky to see Bowie performance it in Australia. I love the song.
It is Robert Fripp’s whistling and wailing “woo-ooo-woo woo-ooo-ooo-ooo” guitar that makes this song the sonic masterpiece that it is. In my opinion, it’s the greatest song in Rock/Pop history.
I saw an documentary about this song. They had a Mike directly in front of Bowie, around 10 feet away and about 20 feet away. That's why the sound of the vocal changes when he starts singing loudly. All 3 mikes are picking up his vocals as opposed to only 1 when he sings quietly

Part of Bowie's genius was in choosing collaborators. Tony Visconti was one of the most key.
One of the greatest songs ever written or performed. A true masterpiece. I tear up every time I hear “…and the guards shot above our heads…”. That line captures what we all felt when we were younger - puppy love, invincibility and an optimistic outlook on our lives.
And David Bowie’s eye was permanently damaged in a fight with a friend. It contributed to his unique look and persona.
He also had heterochromia, so each eye was a different colour :)

Bowie was a genius, and he had a real sense of intrigue about him. He was tall, thin, edgy, dangerous, “other-worldly”;

His injured eye contributed to this aura. He was more than human to borrow a Rob Zombie phrase, and his immense talent was further enhanced by his surprising good nature when he interacted with his fans. The guy was literally one of a kind, the likes of which this Earth might not see for generations.
I'm still coming to terms with the loss of Bowie/Joe Strummer/Chris Cornell/ Pete Shelly. who ever is taking these RARE GEMS FROM US . STOP IT AND GIVE THEM FUCKING BACK

Cool reaction. This is one of the all time greatest tracks of the ‘70’s. It’s amazing it still sounds so fresh 45 years later. That’s a testament to Bowie’s long lasting influence on generations of musicians and songwriters. Regarding his eyes, he got punched in the eye by his lifelong friend George Underwood over a girl when they were teens. He nearly lost sight in it and was left with a permanently dilated pupil giving him a unique odd eyed appearance, as if he wasn’t already striking. The two boys made up and remained friends until Bowie’s death. He did say George actually did him a huge favor.
It's so weird. I will never understand my reaction to the news of his passing. I was never a big fan but I enjoyed his music and loved his personality. When I got the news he died, I felt like Obi-wan when Alderaan was blown up. A tremendous talent and human being. Motorhead did an amazing cover of this

Same, Josh. I mean, I knew a lot of his stuff and liked all of it, but I was never a superfan. When he died though-it seemed impossible. Like he was never ever going to share time with him. And I don’t understand my reaction, either 🤷🏼♀️
I think he was my first love. I saw Labyrinth when I was little and fell head of heels in love with him as the Goblin King. I couldn’t understand why Sarah didn’t just marry him and make him promise to quit turning babies into goblins, as like I guess a prenup. Child logic. But my heart hurt in a way it had never hurt before. But I didn’t get over it and would occasionally talk about how I had a crush on him. My friends thought I was nuts bc he was kinda old by then. My ex step dad was a fan of music from the 60’s and 70’s and and bought me the Ziggy Stardust album and I loved it too. I used to watch any movie he was in too. I’m not the type to fall for actors, bc I realized from a young age that it was the character they played that stirred my heart, not the actor himself. But with David Bowie it was different, he felt different. I remember reading an article where Iman said after a decade of marriage he still made her heart race. Dude made one of the most beautiful women in the world adore him. And every person I heard talk about him, including ex’s, talked about what a wonderful person he was. When he died I’d mostly gotten over my childhood crush, tho he had this special place in my heart bc he was the first one to make me feel that painful feeling you get in your chest when you long for someone. So I was sad but not destroyed the way I’d have been when I was young. More like a bittersweet feeling that any amazing person had passed who never knew me but had a profound impact on my childhood.
The second half always gives me chills. So much emotion in that voice.
Ground Control is actually called Space Oddity and many name that to be his greatest work, and it was his first hit! His first album was very much a flop, possibly his worst album. It was a Folk Pop record with novelty-like songs. His second album, later renamed Space Oddity, was suddenly much more mature and artistic. Space Oddity was the crown jewel of that album and, given that it was released around the same time as the moon landing, it became an international hit!

This song would fit "The Boys" sooo well! As credits music or something like that. I've never heard this song before, thank you for introducing me to David Bowie. 👍
Bowie was making killer albums even in the 2000s and even into the 2010s. His final ALBUM, Blackstar, was his last work of genius. He recorded it in secret whilst incredibly sick from terminal liver cancer, but kept both the album and his illness secret from the world. His producer afterwards described it as his last gift to the fans.
The album contained numerous hints towards the truth of the matter, without giving it away. In fact the last song on the album is called 'I Can't Give Everything Away'. And a Black Star could refer to the solar system (which he was always associated with with songs like 'The Man That Fell To Earth' and 'Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars' but is also a type of cancer lesion.
The singles include the 10 minute progressive jazz single 'Blackstar' and 'Lazarus' which references the character in the Bible who has to sacrifice his life for the good of humanity.
Two days after the album came out, he passed away. He is the only artist I know of that turned his own oncoming death into performance art and ended a career that was continually defined by pushing boundaries, artistic expression, constant reinvention and true, true iconicism. Definitely check out the title track I would love a reaction to it and all his weird genius.
The studio where this was recorded was literally next to the Berlin Wall. The song's basis was Bowie watching his producer, Tony Visconti (who was married at the time) making out with another woman outside the studio and relating that the act of love was greater than the politics at the time (And the guns shot above our heads - and we kissed as though nothing would fall) That makes you a hero, if only for one day.
Such a great song! Brings me back to my younger years listening to my moms music. She was mainly 80s but she listened to some 70s too. She loves bowie. And his passing was a great loss to many of us

'' We can be Heroes '' that is the great teaching of this song, we can all be Heroes not only with great actions but with small daily actions like that young couple that inspired David, the two of them alone kissing on the Wall that divided Berlin in two and that maintained tension in many countries.
I like your thoughts on the song’s meaning! I think Bowie was referring to lovers split by the border in Berlin amidst the Cold War, but the point of music is that it speaks to us all differently.

Depeche Mode did an awesome cover of this song to honor him after he passed. This song is what actually brought the band together as Dave Gahan sang it when he auditioned to be in the band.

If you want to travel back in time on a rainy or boring day, look for Bowie's concert in Hammersmith in 1973, the day he broke up with the spiders from Mars. The quality is not very good but it is an iconic live and a true Rock jewel. It's gonna blow your minds.

My favorite bowie song. I remember being a kid when the replacements came out and this song played at the end. I was hooked

There's a very funny anecdote about this song.
- When Bowie, Producer Tony Visconti and sound sculpturist extraordinaire Brian Eno were recording the song, they figured they needed some "Hairy chested rock n roll guitar playing" and so they enlisted King Crimson guitarist and sound sculpturist extraordinaire in his own right Robert Fripp to come over and do his thing.
Anybody familiar with Robert Fripp will tell you that he's not your normal typical guitar player. For example he's tone deaf and has no sense of melody. For this song he figured the right thing to do was to give it a howling siren in the back ground. He accomplished this by having his amplifier on "Prepare-thyselves" volume levels so his guitar started to howl in a perfect G-note and he would walk a few steps so the howling would go up a tone into an A-note. He overdubbed that three or four times and that's what you hear on the song.
Come the tour rehearsals, Fripp couldn't be booked, Luckily, Eno knew just the guy who could take Fripp's place: Frank Zappa guitarist Adrian Belew. Now anybody familiar with Belew will tell you that he's an even bigger freak than Fripp and during the rehearsals of this song both Bowie and Eno couldn't stop laughing. When Belew asked them to let him in on the joke, they told him about how Fripp had recorded three or four tracks and that they found it hilarious how Belew was playing that "Impossible guitar part" all by himself.
This song gets me every time. He performed it with Neil Young at the Bridge School Benefit concert, which I got to see live and words cannot describe the emotion that came over the crowd.
The tears were real and everyone felt it.
He wrote this song about two lovers living in opposite sides of the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. When he died, the German Foreign Office official government twitter account tweeted "Good-bye, David Bowie. You are now among #Heroes. Thank you for helping to bring down the #wall."
Bowie's "China Girl" is a good song too
David Bowie's left eye was actually permanently dilated due to a young fight in the 1960s over a girl between him and someone who would later become a lifelong friend. He punched David straight in the eye and it caused something called Anisocoria where the pupil cannot revert it's dilation.

One of the best gigs I ever went to was Glastonbury in 1999ish when Bowie closed the festival on a hot and balmy Sunday night. That performance was sublime. An incredible musician and songwriter.

David Bowie has such a deep catalog and cultural significance. He started back in the late sixties, was the inventor of Glam Rock and dropped his last album in 2016 right around the time he died. He also check out the song Black Star from his last album. Esoteric mystical and crazy instrumental.

David Bowie had a condition called anisocoria which was caused by a simple fight over a girl when a close friend ended up punching Bowie directly in the left eye, scratching the iris. He was taken to the hospital and eventually had two different eye surgeries. But for the rest of his life, the pupil remained dilated to give him his signature look.
Here's a fun fact for you, my fellow Trash Talkers, I hope it wasn't mentioned already: David Bowie did a song with Maynard. It's called "Bring me the Disco King" and as you may expect it's dope af.

Loved his early to mid 70's for the Ziggy Stardust days. Rebel Rebel, Panic in Detroit, Sufragette City, Jean Genie, Watch That Man, Diamond Dogs, Starman, Rock n Roll Suicide, Ziggy Stardust. These are just up 1974.
Wow...straight away . There's a cool youtube clip of Tony Visconti talkin bout how they recorded this song. It's fucking epic.
Also featuring Robert Fripp of King Crimson as the guitarist with the long sustained notes! It's interesting to note that because of Fripp's collaboration with producer Brian Eno, that he would also meet Adrian Belew, another guitarist sent in to help Bowie, and Belew came straight off of Frank Zappa (his auditions are very demanding of perfection). Belew would soon become the new vocalist for King Crimson after their previous album, Red, to start the new wave era with their new bassist/Chapman stick player, Tony Levin, called Discipline.
Another important thing to note is that Belew and Fripp would also be featured on another production by Eno that was also inspired Bowie's work and would also inspire the latter, the band known as Talking Heads, on Fear of Music. Belew would come back as a session guitarist on the next album, Remain in Light and would emulate lead front man's unusual singing, David Bryne, for some of the songs of King Crimson throughout the 80's.
I strongly recommend King Crimson and Talking Heads when you get the chance if you're up for it!

I remember listening to David Bowie with my grandmother a lot growing up and I remember the last few days of him on earth and his album black star came out which is a masterpiece of modern day music idc what anybody says.
"We can be heroes" is the anthem of the underdog, the outsiders, and the ignored. Hes saying we've got each other in spite of all the bullshit this world throws, and we will have our moment to stand up to it all with grace. "We can be heroes, just for one day..."
Hear his German Version from the Movie "Christiane F. vom Bahnhof Zoo".Motörhead/Lemmy recorded a Cover Version of Heroes just before he died.Bowie was BI.Jessica Lange sung Heroes in the American Horror Story : Freaks Series.Bowie got a green and a blue eye ball.Not about a One Night Stand,but about Drugs Abuse,The Golden Shot,Children Street Hookers,Berlin with the deviding Wall......
This song just reminds me of home. Just reminds me of Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire, London, Birmingham, the Lake District, cornwall and more. The same effect happens with any oasis song.

oh, someone got to that 8 months ago, lol...I saw David Bowie in Vancouver on the Sound and Vision tour in 199...ish...I was so ripped I can't even remember, but I had bought 3 cassette tapes of vintage Bowie the contents of which would blow your fucking mind...certainly did mine.

The song is about being in the studio in Berlin recording this album….Bowie can look out the studio windows and see the Wall….it was the 70s….it still stood…..armed guards on the towers waiting to shoot you down if you try to go over the wall…Bowie looked out the window….and saw a couple kissing…..up against the wall…..it ended up being his Producer….he thought it was very courageous that they did this simple act of kissing up against what the world knew as a huge symbol of tyranny…..it moved him…and he wrote the song….it’s why the last time around….he sounds like his heart is breaking and he is crying as he sings……it’s quite chilling.
he started his career in the mid 60s his first hit was in 1969 and he continued to make music untill 2004 when he got ill and stopped. he started working again in 2013 he released his last record 2 days before dying in january 2016.

Bowie declared himself gay in an interview with Michael Watts for a 1972 issue of Melody Maker, coinciding with his campaign for stardom as Ziggy Stardust. According to Buckley, "If Ziggy confused both his creator and his audience, a big part of that confusion centred on the topic of sexuality." In a September 1976 interview with Playboy, Bowie said, "It's true-I am a bisexual. But I can't deny that I've used that fact very well. I suppose it's the best thing that ever happened to me." His first wife, Angie, supports his claim of bisexuality and alleges that Bowie had a relationship with Mick Jagger.
In a 1983 interview with Rolling Stone, Bowie said his public declaration of bisexuality was "the biggest mistake I ever made" and "I was always a closet heterosexual." On other occasions, he said his interest in homosexual and bisexual culture had been more a product of the times and the situation in which he found himself than of his own feelings.
Blender asked Bowie in 2002 whether he still believed his public declaration was his biggest mistake. After a long pause, he said, "I don't think it was a mistake in Europe, but it was a lot tougher in America. I had no problem with people knowing I was bisexual. But I had no inclination to hold any banners nor be a representative of any group of people." Bowie said he wanted to be a songwriter and performer rather than a headline for his bisexuality, and in "puritanical" America, "I think it stood in the way of so much I wanted to do."
Buckley wrote that Bowie "mined sexual intrigue for its ability to shock", and was probably "never gay, nor even consistently actively bisexual", instead experimenting "out of a sense of curiosity and a genuine allegiance with the 'transgressional'." Biographer Christopher Sandford said, according to Mary Finnigan-with whom Bowie had an affair in 1969-the singer and his first wife Angie "created their bisexual fantasy". Sandford wrote that Bowie "made a positive fetish of repeating the quip that he and his wife had met while 'fucking the same bloke' ... Gay sex was always an anecdotal and laughing matter. That Bowie's actual tastes swung the other way is clear from even a partial tally of his affairs with women." The BBC's Mark Easton wrote in 2016 that Britain was "far more tolerant of difference", and that gay rights (such as same-sex marriage) and gender equality would not have "enjoyed the broad support they do today without Bowie's androgynous challenge all those years ago".
For me, the definitive version of this song was from the "Concert for New York" (9/11 tribute/relief). He dedicates the song to the men an women of NYFD and "his local ladder" specifically.

No, David Bowie wasn't gay, in fact, he was married to beautiful somalian Supermodel Iman Abdulmajid for over 20 years, up until he sadly passed in 2016 due to cancer. They even have a daughter together Alexandria. But you're right, Bowie was someone who wasn't afraid to show his androgynous side, which in the 70s was a huge deal. He also did concerts to raise money for AIDS research, his wife and him participated in fundraising events, which benefited research into HIV/AIDS and he also raised money for the organisation Keep A Child Alive, that works to protect african children from AIDS. Aside from that Bowie has been involved in about 10 other charities. He wasn't just a great musician but also a great human being.
“Space Oddity” is the Major Tom song. “Heroes” is from 1977 during his Berlin period. Bowie’s career goes back to the mid 1960s. His breakthrough recording was in 1969. He was still recording up until his death. I saw David touring this album in 1977 at the old Boston Garden. Bowie was firing on all cylinders with an incredible band.

David Bowie is one of Top 10, if not 5 most influential artists post- Elvis Priestley. Other fun things, he was the 3rd internet provider in USA and he bashed MTV got not playing enough black artists back in the early eighties (interview is on youtube:)

If you like Under Pressure which he wrote and sung with Queen why not listen to the fan's version on TH-cam (please not the official version) where he mixes Queen and Bowie together. Great stuff. Heroes is great live in his Live in Berlin concert. Rebel Rebel (when he's got an eye patch in a studio) is great too as is Life on Mars ;)

Under Pressure was written by David Bowie and Freddie Mercury and it's performed by Bowie and Queen. It's not a Queen song. It's a joint project. It's a Queen AND David Bowie song. :)
