  • This intriguing little animated toy is based on a Chinese snake, as Rob shows, but it doesn't have to be. He shows how, with simple materials, you can make your own activated dragon - or anything.

    They use to sell these amazing “mice on a string” in the streets of Mexico 25 years ago. They moved like real animals. They had this same mechanism.

      Have you heard of Olten in switzerland near Basel? İs it related to alton? Also there is an Alton in New hampshire on the shores of scenic lake willipesaukee.

      @@garrysekelli6776 , the city of Alton (population, 707) is the seat of Oregon County (population, 8,635), Missouri. Alton, Missouri, was named after the city of Alton, Illinois. Rufus Easton developed Alton, Illinois, and named it for his son.

    You can also use a discarded spool from a spool of thread but make sure it's the kind that is wider on both sides and thin on the middle. Some old wooden kinds are shaped just right for this project.
    Or if you're quite handy with a knife, you can shape a piece of cork to be just the right shape for this too.
    I used to have a similar toy myself when I was small which was made out of paper mache and was shaped like a little green turtle 🐢

      How did you make the back and forth motion of the scales of the first dragon model that is shown?

    • @leaf427
      @leaf427 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DoNotPushHere The same mechanism as with e.g. vaccum cleaneh hose. Just folded, carborated structure is springy, friction of surface e.g. carpet holds it for a moment and then energy is relised to fold structure again.

      Looks like a simple mountain and valley origami fold, with a reverse in the middle. If you look closely, the body looks like a long two-sided deck.
      Take a long strip and fold back and forth, in and out, like a zigzag all the way along. Then after, take one long side and reverse each and every fold for the first inch or so.
      Near the center of the strip, some strange crimples will form but I'm sure you'll find a pattern, which is like a zigzag itself, matching the opposing "mountains" and the "valleys" and making an accordion fold

      Thanks. Curiosity Show was a national science program featuring Dr Rob Morrison and Dr Deane Hutton. It was made in Adelaide, South Australia and screened nationally in Australia as well as in Europe, Asia and Australasia (14 countries and dubbed in German for Europe) from 1972-1990. Deane and Rob intentionally used everyday items around the house (like old rusty cans) so that people could repeat the demonstrations with materials they had to hand. In 1984 Curiosity Show won the Prix Jeunesse International, the world's top award for TV programs for young people. Rob and Deane are steadily uploading segments at th-cam.com/users/curiosityshow Why not subscribe?

    aaah very nice I wanted to learn how to make these. sellers in our town used to make sound effects with their mouths as they made it run. I only later realised there is no sound coming from that thing.
