  • Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #19: Advanced Bossa Nova Phrase 3333
    in:
    Águas de Março (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
    This is based mainly on the first recording by Jobim and Elis Regina from legendary Elis and Tom album with guitar accompaniment played by Oscar Castro Neves. Some adjustments were also made in accordance with several Castro Neves' solo recordings as well as with João Gilberto's version.
    This video also contains lyrics subtitled below the rhythm box. The lyrics are synchronized with the notes from the rhythmic phrases and placed in the timeline at the exact positions of the beats as they were sung by Jobim and Elis Regina. Lyrics subtitles support triplets and those are also placed at the correct positions.
    The lesson shows the usage of advanced bossa nova phrase 3333. This rhythmic phrase may be constructed as a polyrhythmic composition of two simple rhythms, the first one performed on bass string playing all quarter notes on strong beats 1, 5, 9 and 13 and the second performed on high strings playing 8th notes on all offbeats (2, 4, 6,...).
    Some things to note about guitar accompaniment:
    1. All notes are played with staccato except the beat 4 in both measures that is played with legato. Muting of the strings is performed mainly with the right hand fingertips.
    2. Original recording on Elis and Tom was played in Bb key, however on subsequent recordings Oscar Castro Neves played Águas de Março a semitone above (B). This slight change makes it possible to play open E string chords (Emaj7, E6) which is much easier to play on a guitar than Eb and for this reason we have chosen Castro Neves' voicing. Some chords were substituted in order to make the progressions easier: before B7/A (5th fret) we always play B6 (7th fret), while before F#m7 (2nd fret) we always play B6/9/F# (2nd fret).
    3. The rhythmic phrases also include phrase 3113 used by João Gilberto in his recordings of Águas de Março. At the other hand Oscar Castro Neves used mainly rhythmic phrase from this lesson (3333). In this recording we used the combination of both phrases with the addition of the basic bossa nova phrase to make the accompaniment more interesting. Note that the rhythm of the melody contains a lot of triplets which can be seen in the timing of lyrics. Also note that the rhythm of "São as águas de março..." refrain is different in every subsequent repeat.
    Enjoy playing Águas de Março!

    As a guitarist playing western music my whole life, I got bored of it and stopped playing for many years. You have introduced me to a world of music that sparks lights in me like when I was 12 learning my first songs.
    I've been playing guitar every day again now for the past 3 months, and I love the challenge this music brings into my life.
    I'm a Patreon supporter and would love to see some sheet music for this. I'd be happy to pay more if that helps you out.
    Thank you for bringing me back to guitar, and thank you for your attention to detail as a great online teacher.
    Parabéns! Muitas felicidades!

      I feel you! But my main problem with bossa is to remember all the chords. Never Ever is there a bass note to rely on finding the chords 😅😆. Always and Only inversions and This chord but with That base note 🧐😝 drives me crazy but I’ll keep on trying!

    i can’t find 1 recording of Jobim playing this in this key

    • @bossanovaguitar
      @bossanovaguitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As I explained in the description, the key (B) is based on Oscar Castro Neves interpretation, Jobim played it a semitone below (Bb), manly because he was primarily a pianist and for a piano arrangement the key is almost irrelevant, while on a guitar it makes a big difference. Thanks for pointing that out.

    bossanovaguitar, Which type of guitar string do you use most often, Nylon or Steel? I've always used Steel string but I'm considering Nylon for Bossa Nova style musik.

    • @bossanovaguitar
      @bossanovaguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you play classical guitar you should only use nylon or carbon strings (only high three). I prefer carbon, but that really depends on a guitar sound. The one I use for tutorials has a bit dark sound and carbon strings sound is brighter then nylon so those two make a perfect match. On acoustic and electric you would use steel, but they are not the best choice for bossa nova. Thanks for your input.

    • @bossanovaguitar
      @bossanovaguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just to clarify, I meant that only trebles are made of carbon, basses are usually nylon.

      @@bossanovaguitar, Thanks for the information! I will definitely keep that in mind. So to understand correctly, you stated using carbon strings on the high three, then nylon on the lower three. That is awesome if I'm understanding that correctly. I never thought and have never been told to combine the two types of strings for that unique sound. Well taken! Thanks again.

      @@bossanovaguitar, Ahh, and that to me makes much sense. I will definitely re-rig my guitar with this particular arrangement. Great tips and thanks for clarifying that.

      You're welcome. On a side note, carbon highs do tend to last a bit longer than nylon, but even they get out of tune eventually, so make sure you change them regularly.

    Are you the Italian gentleman who created a DVD Bossa series, and lyrics page years ago?

    If so, your lessons, and DVD have served me well over the years. Thank you.

    This has to be the hardest bossa nova song to play

    • @bossanovaguitar
      @bossanovaguitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's quite a challenge, but there is a lot of repeating, which makes it easier to practice. Good luck and let me know if there's anything I could do to help you. Thanks!

    Nice arrangement and cleanly played, but the rhythmic aspect needs a lot of work. Very clunky and unnatural. It’s not so much the specific rhythmic figures used but the lack of
    the bossa nova swing while playing them.
    Still, I’m not one to criticize, I wish I had your clean and precise right hand
