  • Hey Horse Lovers! WOW you are going to be blown away with this TWO PART Video SERIES of our Appaloosa Auction Adventure. We went to a horse auction in Sheridan, IL put on by Diamond E Horse Company. This auction was actually in my home town where I grew up, but we had to drive 5 hours from where we now live in Michigan. In Part 1, I'm going to show you all of the horses, point out what I notice, show you my process, and give you some tips and advice regarding auctions. Part 2 will be the bidding process! Moreover, If you ever want to buy a horse from an auction I highly recommend bringing an experienced trainer, buyer, or friend along for the ride. ANYWAYS, Check out how I go about picking & bidding on horses at this sale and as always Enjoy the ride!

I absolutely agree, I support Horse Plus Humane Society, they’re absolute angels and save every horse they can in slaughter price range to stop the kill buyers and feed lots buying them. This stops these beautiful animals dying a horrendous death in Mexico and Canada. They even buy horses that have to have the last act of kindness because they’re so badly injured or extremely sick. They give love to every single horse, donkey, mule and mini that comes to their yard. Seriously good organisation and such beautiful souls.

Should only kill for survival. This kill auction is unnecessary as we already hunt wild animals.

My very first horse was an Appaloosa. She was a big brood mare dark brown with a white blanket. My mom's Appaloosa was a red roan who was pregnant when we got her. She had a colt who was kind of a red roan with a white blanket. My brother had a white Appaloosa, he had lost his color. He was beautiful and he knew it. We would get him all cleaned up and my brother had everything black, saddle and briddle then he would get on him and he would arch his neck and start prancing with his tail up and was just beautiful to watch. All of our horses were spoiled rotten. They were more like big puppy dogs than horses.
In the mornings we would step outside and they would start telling us good morning. If we wanted to go riding all we had to do is call them. If we went out in the pasture they would have to come see what you were doing. Those days are my fondest memories growing up. All of the horses you were showing were all very nice looking. There were a few that needed some TLC but not bad. Thank for your video I sure miss not having horses anymore.

It really upsets me, when the People who buy horses to go abroad to kill , is heartbreaking, I hate these humans who can pick out those that go for a cheap price and the mares with foals can be bought cheaply. I used to go to Auctions to save any pony, donkey, Mule i could, then, I would get my Vet to check them out, make them well again , physically and mentally, and when they were ready for a wonderful home put them up for sale. Only the best homes for them, of course. But, I'm could not save them all, and, it it broke my heart every Auction and affected me so badly, and decided not to go to anymore Auctions. This one here looks like , they may all be a OK. What a lovely lady you are with all your lovely and lucky horses, to be in your care, awe

At my barn my parents brought in this new Overo Mare and her colors are absolutely GORGEOUS.
She has a white base and a few light brown/honey color patch’s on her.
She has half brown half white mane and it’s long and healthy.
We’ve had her a week and she doesn’t like to get dirty and is always smooth.
I have a 2 year chestnut Filly that’s an amazing horse if you wanna go fast around a ring but he’s always really dirty, they are pretty much opposites but they get along surprisingly well.

I would have loved the little Zebu, but I can understand that being a risky even just plain idea for a mainly horse owner, as cattle fed can be straight up toxic to horses, so the poor little fella would just be an additional risk factor with owning horses.

Thank you for taking us along on your trip to buy a new horse. I've wanted a horse all my life. I asked for one for my sixth birthday. Mom wasn't convinced a horse would be happy living in our basement as I suggested, and city life would not make a horse happy. In my entire life, I.have been on a horse for maybe 30 minutes in total. I am living vicariously through you. All I can say was.I had a wonderful time...just sad that your film ended with "to be continued". I did subscribe to your channel so I will look forward to seeing more. You used quite a few terms I had never heard before. Next time I will write them down so I can look them up. I loved the little donkeys too. So darn cute. And, I guess since I am a tall woman I end up being attracted too (and a little afraid of) the big / tall horses. So many wonderful choices. I'm just sad you don't have the time or resources to help one of the neglected horses. I feel bad that they do not have anyone to love them and help them regain their strength and good spirits. I am very impressed with your confidence around and knowledge of horses. You were very good at reading the horse's mood and respecting their choice to become better acquainted or not. I liked that very much. Whoever you bring home will be a very lucky horse. I am excited to see what happens at the auction and which horse you buy!

    • @anitajonsson4379
      @anitajonsson4379 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for your response. I did not expect it. You have so much to do with your business and horses. Of course, you have taken in neglected horses. I should have realized that you do from what I witnessed during the auction. Your love, respect and concern for every horse that you visited during the pre-auction horse inspection phase was definitely apparent in your manner, words and interactions with the horse you were with. It had not dawned on me that each buyer had goals, a budget, and a criteria to meet in the purchase of a horse. I also learned that the entire process was a dynamic process, there were no guarantees, and achieving what you hoped for was a matter of timing: right buyer for the horse's needs, right horse for the buyer's purchasing goals, and the right degree of congruence between cash available and asking price, buyer confidence, and competition characteristics at work during the auction of your desired horse. I was relieved to see that buyers have more than one chance to win if--during the inspection pre-auction phase--they look for and find more than one horse that would fit their purchasing criteria. It is also important to gather as much information about the horse you like and then rate it in each of the criteria categories required. Total ranking of each horse liked would help with the bidding process.
Then when a horse in your select group comes up for auction the game begins. And, if you were not able to go the distance and outbid other bids to win the horse (for many reasons; such as, the horse was not your favourite which was yet to come up for bidding, and the price asked was either more than you could pay due to budget, or would pay depending on the worth you placed on owning that particular horse) there are still other horses you have qualified for purchase and can bid on them should you choose. Always another horse at that auction in your select group or, perhaps, in the next auction.
I'm sorry I'm rambling and writing on. It was exciting adventure, a great lesson, and a most enjoyable film. You were magnificent on all counts. I loved how it all turned out. I look forward to the next episode. 💖👏

I'm SO into the big drafts lately. I've always wanted one. So I would have had to be tied and hauled out on a dolly to keep from getting at least 2. Preferably the Irish Drum and maybe the big dapple gray or Domino. My 2nd horse was an Appy mare, and I fell in love with the breed. I'm too old and broken now to ride, but my grandkids and great grandkids would all benefit from owning one, or at least having access to one aka grandmas house

This is the amazing and at the same time, sad thing about horses in USA.
The horses nobody wants, usually ends up on slaughter trucks, being shipped from auction to auction, until they reach the border.
But this auction looks like the horses are higher class, well cared for, and I like the openness of the whole thing, so easy to view the horses, good light, and everything.
The video is well made, and the horses are stunning.. 😍

I choose Nacho! I’m wondering how many hands? His disposition is playful and inquisitive, nice. He seemed sweet.
I also love wide chesty horses, prefer geldings over filly’s or mares and all the old fashion large rounded buns, love, love, love Domino and Groot. Groot is quiet natured, nice; he would make a nice, comfortable, easy, enjoyable ride.

What a beautiful auction! I'm glad that *most* of the horses, donkeys, mules, & ponies were in good shape, well-fed, well-farrowed, & well-groomed. Like you say, every horse has some small issue but some less than others.
I grew up in a Mojave Desert town about one hour west of Bishop, CA in the Sierras, which itself was an hour west of the fabled Mt. Whitney. Bishop is home to the Bishop Mule Days, which included races, rodeos, a conformation mule show, kids' riding, and more. Seeing some of the beautiful mules in this post made me smile nostalgically...those Bishop mules tended to be a bit more rough & ready! But they were performers and I always loved going to see the Bishop Mules at their show.

When I was growing up my Dad always wanted a pony or horse. There was 9 children in my family and I was lucky enough to get my first shetland pony at the age of three. We never sold ponies but by the time I was in middle school we had 21 ponies and 3 horses. I thoroughly appreciate all you cover and the information is so important to know. You are so beautiful and very knowledgeable. Thank you Shae for all you do. ❤❤❤

That dip in that 1 horse's back is known as swayback. they can only get this if they were ridden too young. My Pappy explained this to me when he was living.
When a horse or pony is under 2, you can ride them at a certain growth rate, but not for too long. He explained no more than 15 to 30 minutes should be the length of any ride. The lighter the load on a young horse, the better. If you have too heavy of a load on a growing horse or pony for too long, they'll get sway back. He explained they're usually full grown by about 3 years old. If you're going to ride a young horse that's just big enough to ride, you're probably best to just sit on them for a moment or two, no more than a few minutes and just ride at a short walk . my Pappy was a World War 2 vet and he had a small horse farm after steel mill retirement. He pretty much knew all about horses and ponies, so that's why he passed that knowledge on to me. Now I can pass it on to others who really need to know from someone else's experience. You can ride a young horse or a pony, but make sure the rider is as light as possible. When they reach about to, you can't completely trust a two-year-old, so just be careful.
I've seen situations where we've had new Colts and baby saddles on them just to start getting them used to the saddle during baby age. I noticed how the horse trainer would just start walking them around when they were just big enough to be able to just start working with them.
You pretty much have to start working with them at birth according to our horse trainer. You have to start by petting them a lot, talking to them, hand feeding them, and then walking them around with a rope and halter. When there are a few weeks or a few months old, you can put a baby saddle on and just walk them around just to start getting them used to it. The horse trainer's daughter, who was about 3, was eventually put into that baby saddle and walked around on the colt. Our horse trainer was much Indian, so she knew a whole lot more than we did and we learned from her. We never had a single issue with any of the horses or ponies that grew up on our farm. Those who were around the farm long enough learned something about horses. If they didn't even know a thing. by time you left that farm you pretty much were an expert to some degree or another. After a long while of seeing Pappy feeding each animal, it's own type of food and it's own amounts that each one got come out. I was riding snowball 1 day when I got a feeling to surprise Pappy and go ahead and feed the animals, because now I know how. This was something that was way outside my norm. That's because I was never asked by Pappy to feed, but this day I got a feeling like something came over me to go ahead and surprise. Shortly after that, there were times when Pappy had me go ahead and feed, and he sometimes looked in on me during those times to make sure I was giving the right foods in the right amounts to the right animals. I never made a mistake as Papi supervised to make sure I knew what I was doing. I didn't even realize that I knew all the measurements until I had that feeling come over me 1 day and I surprised him. after that, there were times when I could be an extra help on the farm at feeding time, even at times I could help with watering. He soon found out I couldn't lift a 5 gallon bucket of water and had to have only a 1/2 bucket or less, so that meant I had to make more trips to fill up a certain outdoor trough. although I did get stronger, I can't say that I'll ever be as strong as Papi. It was so much easier though to just turn on the bathtub inside the one section of the barn and fill up that trough. Pappy's long since gone comma but those were the days!
Shout out to Pappy hopefully in heaven, I love you Pappy! You are missed, thanks so much for the love, support an educational experience along with total personal growth and freedom. you will be forever loved and missed.
Also shout out to snowball, my favorite 3/4 horse/pony of all the animals we ever had. I love and miss you girl, Pappy buried you on the farm in the small field. I'll see you in heaven someday, be good, see you soon. Thanks for the 2 colts, I was able to ride one although the other 1 died. You're older one lived through the poisoning. You and your first born experienced. I don't know if Pappy ever found out who poisoned you, it was when neither of us we're able to catch whoever it was. I'm sure God knows who it was, but again, I'll see you and your baby in heaven someday.
