There are two types: Primaries which are white walled and are considered the hard compound, and Alternates which are red walled and considered the soft compound. Indy Car tires are designed to be driven hard 100% all of the time which is why we see usually 2-3 pitstops per road/street race. Each driver has to use each tire per race.
@@tenji240 the only caveat is that on street courses, there is a new green sidewall tire instead of red made from the more sustainable Guayule plant instead of standard rubber. It still is the softer of the two compounds and functionally acts the same as the reds in the race
@@cindywolvers5968 the blacks(primaries) are hard. the exact compounds do change per race, but blacks are always considered the harder compound, the red or green is the softer alternate
It would be interesting to get your guys' (especially Marcus') thoughts on Nick Cassidy's recent excellent form in Formula E. Have any of you ever met, watched race, or raced with Nick?
Did the pitstop boys get screaming meals cancelled? I was really hoping for a Long Beach episode and to hear clement's reaction to the indycar race. That was a fun show, they havent posted anything in a while
I just realized, Marcus' also referring to the alternate tyre as the "reds" even though he's never raced with red alternate tyres as they are green this year. Like every other driver is probably just used to these tyres being red but for someone to call them that, that never used these...
@@sams-pg7hj whoops, my mistake. You‘re right. But do you know why this is the case? I believe one of the commentators once said something about them being more ecological and being produced in America. But is there another reason? And is there a reason they have red and green ones?
@@ramsli01 they (green tires) are being tested again this year, they (Firestone) couldn't do green tires on all the road and street courses because they couldn't produce enough, the pandemic and supply chain issues were still hurting at the time. The side walls of the green tires are made of guayule, a plant that takes a lot less water than rubber trees and is greener to produce, so it's more sustainable environmentally. The red and green tires will serve the same purpose in the IndyCar Series, to be the alternate tire to the black primary tire. The green color is just to show it is the new sustainable "green(environmental)" tire instead of the classic red tire we are so used to by now.

I also want an Ilott-Armstrong on the podium. TBH.
Marcus speaking Italian just hits different

Marcus asking for milk alternative I’m sobbing pls
Marcus deciding when other drivers can push or not is a rookie move just let the guy pass 🎉 :P
he still has the f2/european ladder style racing mindset
