      @@redvodka1933 that is fantastic advice!
As a child of the 80’s in elementary, junior, and high school I was repeatedly warned that humans were destroying the planet through general pollution, smog from power plants, CFCs going into the ozone, litter, cutting down the rainforests, and acid rain, with frequent dire assertions and predictions; in hindsight, few, if any, bore resemblance to reality.
Example: I recall being indoctrinated and then committed to cutting all plastic six pack packaging up so that no fish could get stuck in between the small openings.
Also studied renewable energy and was puzzled then why there was such a big push in the 1970s that then largely dissipated in the 80s and 90s.
I’ve no problem with environmentalists, including activists. But please, for the love of humanity, show some respect and accountability when the plethora of doom and gloom predictions fail to materialize.

One more good news: Where I live, there is a sea called "Bodensee" and apparently when my dad was a child, that sea was polluted as hell and stank because factory's keept polluting the water. But that soon changed after some laws were brought up and they tried to clean the water. Now the sea is a drink water source for thousands of people and the water is crystal clear :)
EDIT: Because of my big skill issue in the english language, I managed to confuse a "sea" with a "lake". In german a lake is called "See". So I apologize.

I know I might be a bit late to this, but the reason that the world so effectively managed to ban the spray cans in favor of the ozone layer was because it was a small sacrifice with plenty of lower emitting alternatives that wasn’t too difficult to quickly phase out to avoid destroying the ozone. When it comes to phasing out coal and oil use, the problem becomes much more difficult as alternatives are more scarce and because we’ve already built so much infrastructure related to those products, making it difficult to just phase it out like the spray cans all of those years ago

One thing he didn't mention is that the reason why investors were receiving such a large return on investment is because of Blackrock, specifically the ESG rating system boosting stock prices. So, if you invest in a company with a high ESG rating, the stock goes higher and you make your money that way.
It's actually why Disney is 'woke', because it doesn't matter if the movie about the strong Asian character bombs at the box office if it raises the ESG rating.
There are 2 issues with this:
      1. It means that green companies aren't actually more profitable than companies that aren't green, they just have the support of rich people. If rich people pull out that support, like they're doing now (hello from the future), those companies suddenly aren't a good investment anymore.
      2. It's really easy to fake that stuff. Remember the fake electric truck company that gained billions in funding? What's stopping companies from saying "Hi, we're Tesla, and we're going to create an electric semi-truck," to boost the ESG rating, then pocketing the billions in profit and half-assing the project? If that happens too many times, why would investors continue to place their faith in that system?

Also, “Just vote the climate change away!?” Here in America, we live in a plutocracy masquerading as a republic. Our 2 party duopoly is a national embarrassment! You can pick strangle everyone Blue Team or shoot everyone in the head Red Team, and that’s it! The only good that can be said for it is we’re free to vote strangulation; at least that gives us opportunity to struggle for our lives.
This guy’s also ignoring a couple elephants in the room.
1: The hydrocarbon plutocrats were among the first to discover climate change. Did they respond appropriately to it with oh, I don’t know a sense of decency, duty to their peoples and urgency!? No! They and their allies throughout society fought first to suppress the truth from public consciousness. When that failed they gaslit everyone. Then came bloody austerity ecology and the individual “carbon footprint”, hypocritical climate shaming and to this day, the tyrants that be still fight meaningful climate action tooth and nail! Get it? The mask is off. These monsters would rather commit Human genocide than sacrifice their profits.
2: Even for the sake of argument ignoring capitalisms role in this crisis, the current situation is still untenable. When the nuclear powers built their arsenals, they for all intents and purposes readied and aimed a gun at all of us. All that isn’t happening in a vacuum either. There’s austerity, the police state, the prison industrial complex, massive war machines perpetrating war after war of neoimperialist/neocolonial conquest, systemic racism and all the fUn Of ClAsS WaRfArE we’ve been on about for centuries, etc. etc.
Honestly I wonder whether this guy watches a little too much neoliberal propaganda, at best.

A lot of the arguments made in the video, while making you feel good, are actually fallacies. E.g. 1. While coal related emissions are indeed falling, global energy related emissions went up year over year (for 2022, see IEA). 2. While it is consumers buying stuff companies make, big company lobbies (e.g. fossil fuels, car manufacturers, and the chemical industry) are well documented for actively hampering progress on regulation that limits emissions and pollution. 3. Convenient to leave out what replaced coal in the UKs energy mix. It us natural gas, another fossil fuel.
I agree with the general idea of the video that being pessimistic does not help us towards achieving a sustainable society, but neither does using cherry-picking data to make things appear better than they are.

People will mention specific ways that the environment is improving and alarmists always come out of the woodwork to fight. It's their complex way of punting on personal responsibility. Deep down, they want to justify the lack of meaning they have in their lives. They want the ability to think "I haven't gotten what I wanted from life but it doesn't matter anyways because the climate is going to fail soon and it's all because the system is wicked and unfair".
Showing that improvement is possible puts the onus back on them. It forces them to consider that maybe they do in fact have some level of control and therefore their actions and mentality matter. They can't accept that. They'll hide behind histrionics and flat out deny any positive evidence. They can't reconcile their station in life and a system that is capable of making responsible choices.

The most important thing that needs to change is stigma about nuclear energy. It's extremely safe, doesn't produce much waste in comparison to fossil fuel and we can control how much energy is produced at what time unlike solar and wind. And we even have uranium sitting around from old nuclear warheads from the cold War we retire every year.

    • @D-angelin.Moarar

Saying it's extremely safe is just utter BS, as Chernobylians and Fukushimians would surely tell you. Plus, there's the issue of where to store atomic waste. Yet, I agree that we should for now leave nuclear power on, as the Climate issues are more pressing.

    • @ReddwarfIV
      @ReddwarfIV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +434

@@D-angelin.Moarar Ah yes, Chernobyl and Fukushima. One of them a converted military Generation 1 design built with zero contingency measures, the other a Generation 2 design hit by a fricking _tsunami_ from an unexpected direction, which had multiple failures in its contingency measures (backup batteries and backup diesel generators in the basement destroyed by flooding, a shorter than regulation seawall). There are two nuclear plants in Fukushima - Daiichi and Daini. You've likely only heard about Fukushima Daiichi, because despite both plants getting hit by the same environmental disaster and having the same reactor designs, only one of them had a meltdown. Because Daini had _a regulation height seawall._
Both of these designs are practically ancient. New nuclear reactor designs have learned from failures like this. Several Gen IV reactor designs _cannot_ melt down.
More people were killed in the _evacuation_ of Fukushima than died as a result of the accident itself.
Despite these accidents, nuclear has the fewest number of deaths (even with the most pessimistic estimates) for the amount of energy it generates than any other form of power. Pointing at Chernobyl and Fukushima is like pointing at the Tenerife Disaster or the Uberlingen crash and claiming that planes are more dangerous than any other form of transport.
Nuclear waste can be reprocessed to be used again. The only reason it isn't is because it's cheaper to mine new fuel. If governments wanted to be more environmentally friendly, they could subsidise the process like they do with solar and wind in order to make it profitable, or they could pay for it to be done themselves.
There are also new reactor designs (such as Fast-Neutron Reactors) which can use the waste from other reactors as fuel, reducing waste with lifetimes in the thousands of years to only hundreds, which is far easier to manage. They are more expensive than more conventional reactors, but again, nothing is stopping governments from building them specifically to deal with the waste problem.
...nothing except for people like _you,_ who don't want them built because you're more scared by the big flashy disasters than you are people dying slowly but in far greater numbers.
If climate change is as serious as claimed, that it is a threat to the survival of humanity? Then even if nuclear is as dangerous as you think it is, why does the odd accident that kills a couple million people from cancer over the next few decades matter? Who cares what happens to the radioactive waste so long as we're alive? It's the lesser of two evils, and you're advocating for the bigger evil because you think the lesser evil isn't good enough.

If all problems regarding it, namely the risk of meltdowns and the question of where to store the waste, are as you claim solved until then, we can keep these safe power plants if you ask me.
As for Fukushima, the Tsunami did not hit from an unexpected direction. It hit from the east, where the sea is. And I'm sorry I have to break it to you, but since Fukushima, our planet hasn't become geologically inactive, and for example in the geologically active Rhine valley, there are quite a lot of nuclear power plants, just to name one example. And sure, there weren't too many deaths directly related to the Fukushima accident, but still it made a whole fucking region uninhabitable and you act like that's just negligible. Again, I'm not wholly against this way of producing energy, especially if it means we manage to control the climate crisis, but let's also not act like nuclear power hasn't devastated whole regions and will continue to do so if old plants in dangerous regions are kept on and waste storages built unsafe so that ground water gets contaminated.

It's a fun video and all with a nice sentiment that will hopefully ease a bit of anxiety, but it feels a bit off the mark especially with the new IPCC report being more well, pessimistic than the last one. Ideas like telling people to just stop supporting polluting companies is more difficult to apply than ever as we live in the most corporately consolidated time in history where even buying food for a reasonable cost usually involves tacitly supporting all manner of ecology exploiting business. It's rough. It's also nice to see reports of air getting cleaner, but it's important to note we are comparing air from when leaded gas was available to time 25 years later (and during a car-halting pandemic). Air has many fewer pollutants in it in many cities due to new requirements like the catalytic converter, but sadly those converters don't do too much to lower the greenhouse gasses emitted from a car. That is obviously not to say that the clean air is "useless", just that it isn't really indicative of us solving a climate temperature problem which is what people are doomin' on about.
As a last aside, around the 3:30 mark you talk about wind capacity using the unit "Gigawatts per hour" which I believe may be a typo or misunderstanding. Gigawatts are a unit of power which is a unit of energy per time. GW/h isn't a unit I've seen (energy per time per time?), though GWhr (a unit of energy) is common. If you just meant how many GW (how much energy per time) we generate then in the year 2000 we were already generating just shy of 20GW of wind power. This has done well to move up to around 750GW today which is very impressive, but scientists aren't as bad at seeing exponential curves as you'd think so this isn't like some completely unforeseen impossibility in wind power development. If you meant GWhr, then even in 2000 we were able to generate far more energy than that from wind. Nowadays wind power is probably breaking through the Petawatt-hr barrier. This is awesome, but in terms of the total energy use of humanity on Earth is still under a percent. Solar is looking a bit rosier with its explosive growth, but we still have a long way to go and in the face of even comically bold "immediate net zero emission" climate predictions showing increasing damage to the environment for years to come just due to the sheer inertia of 2 centuries of industrialization it's not hard to empathize with the people who aren't feeling so hopeful.

    • @tomer4566
      @tomer4566 3 ปีที่แล้ว +197

Yes I was looking for this comment. It doesn't matter if wind and solar power grow 2x or 20x - what matters is reducing fossil fuel use and globally that still hasn't happened because we just use so much more energy all the time. Emissions have continued to go up every year and the graph showing a peak at 2025 and a decrease to nothing by 2050 is well, just fiction at the moment. Fiction politicians like to hold up as achievements without actually putting in any work to make it happen.
And we didn't get anything done by telling middle class consumers to spend all their time finding different "ethical" brands. We got things like the 5 day week and the minimum wage by agitating for it and getting new laws passed.

However, it's a good sign that people are living substantially better than before. That doesn't mean we shouldn't ignore the 700 million who are in extreme poverty, but realize that just because there are problems doesn't mean we can't tackle them and make strides. People have an idea that those in power are those with power, but the opposite is true. Those in power are only in power because those one level below them on the pyramid choose to let them stay. Those on the level below are only in power because those on the level below them choose to let them stay. Politicians do what they have to do because if they don't, they won't be politicians anymore. Those that do that to politicians have to, because if they don't, they won't be in that position anymore. The cycle repeats all the way to the bottom. Ultimately the power is in no one's hands because by the time you get down to the bottom of the pyramid they can't do anything nor can they rally up the masses to try and do something. I like this video but hugely disagree on blaming the consumers
It's not their fault that the more economically comfortable options are those made with less eco friendly materials that then the company exploits to use less money and earn more by using the cheaper but harmful alternative
In many cases the eco friendly foods and products cost always more than the cheaper but harmful one, not buying the product of the specific harmful company is not only not effective if millions still buy from it but also if you can't afford a better alternative you will still be forced to buy from them or a similiar competitor in the end, here the government needs to step in to force the companies to use better alternatives otherwise they would still continue to do as they please to earn more

The government being tougher on pollution is definitely a good thing and when consumers have options, the majority will obviously buy tge cheaper, more polluting option. Unless the choice here is made out of necessity rather than out of comfort, I think it's perfectly reasonable to blame the consumers in that situation.

The companies spend the least amount of money to earn the most and in the process create damage on the planet consumers and animals

While working on my thesis in college, I researched and gathered a lot of data from sources government and regulating bodies alike. When I laid them all out to write a short story of the journey, I realise it was not all doom and gloom as I always had it in my mind. I remember staying up late one night to recollect my thoughts and write that portion thesis a different way. I can confirm a similar trend of numbers for my country too. India, despite being a developing economy, takes things like investments in renewables, nuclear energy, emission standards etc very seriously. We pretty much copy the EUs emission standards in our country. (I guess thats also because its very convenient for the auto manufacturers as well). We have invested quite a bit in Wind farms and such as well. I have not only seen a reported reduction in use of coal plant but I have also seen it happen around me. The area where I lived was a place for coal power plants in the 90s and 00s but 2 of the 3 we had around us are shut down 100% and the third one is at 50% or something like that. With electricity coming from renewables and more and more of it being used in transportation such as electric long distance trains, metros, electric buses, ever electric cars and bikes that are a common thing in big cities now, I dont exactly see it all scary now. Of course theres still a lot to worry about, but now I have a sense of calmness knowing that whatever the problems might be, my generation will have solutions for them, just like the previous one did.

As many issues and tasks as there can be in anyone's lifes, why care about something you cannot see directly in your life? Ecologists always have to bring a new mcguffin to stay relevant since people get tired of them. If the climate change was as huge as a problem there is, then the ecologists wouldn't need to make new artificial solutions and, in fact, they wouldn't be existing since everyone can see climate change with their eyes in their daily life.

@@Valfer37 You read the opposite of what was written.
You asked if bad news are ignored unless repeated often enough. OP said that people stop caring if bad news are repeated often enough.
Besides, you haven't understood what the oft repeated bad news actually are. Melting icebergs are not a problem at all. (And also nothing new ) Rising temperature is not, in itself, the problem either.
The problems are the things that are caused by the rising temperatures, which are things that affect people directly.
Rising sea levels are one thing, and it may seem abstract that farms and cities are slowly getting flooded, displacing a minimum of 14 million people. To those displaced people, losing their homes is not abstract. But that is not something that happens over night either.
Another thing is the increase of weather extremes. Storms have become more frequent and also stronger. An Amazon warehouse in Kentucky was flattened by a storm while people were still working inside. That never happened before, but it is pretty much certain to happen again, not just to warehouses, but to private residences. This directly affected the people who died. Another example is that last year was the first time ever that ther was a tornado in Europe, which damaged a lot of houses. Repairs are still ongoing. Storms also cause increasing damage to forests, which is bad for the timber industry. On some parts of the world, the trees won't grow back anymore because it has become too hot and dry.
Wildfires are also more frequent, and have also destroyed homes and displaced people. And so have floods, which are also an increasingly frequent occurrence.
Between floods and draughts, agriculture is becoming more difficult, which may cause widespread famines.
Those are things that affect people directly. They are freak occurrences at first, then they become normal everyday things. But those things are expensive to deal with, and they get people killed, and there is nothing they can do about it, even though they used to be avoidable.
The problem here is that actions taken two centuries ago are affecting us now, and inaction for decades has done nothing to mitigate the effects. Mitigation is all we can do at this point, but the effects won't be apparent immediately, if at all, because "things didn't turn out as catastrophic as they could have" is not a visceral feedback.
The video mentions the hole in the ozone layer that is already shrinking. Does anyone even notice that? In the few decades of its existence it has caused a noticeable increase of skin cancer, and it will take centuries for the ozone layer to be repaired. If Freon hadn't been outlawed, we would certainly notice the effects.
Another example is acid rain. That was also bad for the wood industry, but most people didn't even notice at first. Then the damages were blamed on radio towers and power lines. It was not until statues began melting that legislation was passed to filter industrial emissions, and the effects were noticeable immediately: Clean air in the cities, rain that didn't taste of sulfur, statues that remained as they were after they were restored, and forests that recovered. Unfortunately, unlike acid rain, the effects of greenhouse gasses will continue to affect our environment for centuries even if we stopped emitting them completely at once.
And some people argue that because acid rain went away, climate change won't be as bad as predicted either.
These are just some of the effects of the planet becoming warmer at an unprecedented pace, some that we know about, that we noticed already.
It is not really repeated a lot because it is simply unimaginable to most people, because it has never happened before, and news services are already suffering from the (not undeserved) reputation of exaggerating everything. Telling people things they won't believe doesn't sell soap.
So we have people who are depressed by the state of the world, and people who don't know about it or actively refuse to believe it.
Do you think that is because it is reported too often, or not often enough?

I think a major factor in anxiety about climate change is that there's so many different factors, even just air quality has hundreds of different factors going into it (not all included in the AQI either, and some can improve while others worsen), but the news will oversimplify this and negative news always gets more people paying attention. The reality is that things are complicated. There's some areas where we're making progress, and some areas we need to work on, but the good news is we've proven that we CAN take action to fix things and succeed already. We need to treat issues that are still going on as possibilities for improvement, because they are definitely important, but convincing ourselves that we're doomed no matter what we do doesn't do anything but hurt our mental health.

People should get the most impartial and factually driven positions on things, and not be "scared into acting". Do that and you might just get them to support on mass poorly thought-out, rushed solutions that could backfire severely in the long term, not just in pure climate effecting but also in socioeconomical terms too. It'd be nice if we could prevent further severe climate change without kneecapping the climb out of poverty of developing countries, for example. Because the infinite growth imperative within capitalism, combined with the shareholder-led, quarterly profit driven, disconnected-from-the-real-economy financial model make it extraordinarily difficult to transition without causing economic turnoil for millions.
"Green growth" is increasingly seen as a total myth. We need a shift towards a more localised, decentralised and publically owned and locally rooted system, at least for the "big stuff" like energy, finance etc. Call it Green Market Socialism if you like but capitalism is at the heart of the climate crisis (not to mention the biodiversity loss, extinctions crisis etc).

Good to talk about good news but you need to be factual. Take for exemple Scotland : 97% of its electric production is renewable, but electricity is a small part of all the energy used in the country. In 2018, 80% of Scotland's energy consumption was still fossil fuels. Same is true for France, the USA... these countries still depend a lot on fossil fuels.
You also need to take into account that the most polluting production have been delocalized in emergent countries, which accounts for the **slow** decline of rich countries CO2 emissions. When you look at the system as a whole, world's CO2 emissions are still increasing, and right now there isn't many reasons to think it will stop going that way.
Not to say we should despair, but it's important to keep in mind that we live in a complex interconnected system, and that most changes we see right now are just cosmetic. We won't be able to attain a real decrease in greenhouse gases emissions without drastically changing the way we live in rich countries.

And if one thing WON'T help climate change, it's pessimism. There is no choice to make. If we all collectively give up, climate progress is 0%. @the8thgemmer467 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

@Pee jay I’m not sure I understand your point. When you refer to average decline, do you mean actual average of countries or global per capita? The world has a slower decline in general but the average may be faster, although giving equal weight to the smallest countries in such a calculation is definitely a mistake. In raw numbers, annual CO2 emissions in the US have remained stagnant, and whether or not they are millions more or millions less is really a rounding error, since total emissions are over 5 billion tonnes. China only emits a quarter of CO2 emissions, not a majority. Per capita it is at similar levels as the EU although its emissions are increasing, unlike the EU. However, China’s emissions per capita have increased by less than half a ton per capita (out of 7 total) which is definitely not as impactful to the global average as you make it out to be.
In any case, I’m not sure what you point is. This is my point: almost every single country in the world is not doing enough to combat climate change, and no developed country is expected to reach a satisfactory amount by 2030, meaning there will be devastating effects for the entire world. The video is wrong to claim that emissions are falling exponentially. Even if it is claiming renewable energy production (which is totally different) is growing exponentially that’s just not true. I don’t take sides over which country is “better” because they are all criminal in their behaviour, and this video seems to be justifying that behaviour by saying that climate change will just fix itself soon enough.

Oil consumption is not decreasing but increasing.
You say oil factories are being closed in the US. Okay, but what about the GLOBAL worldwide oil consumption? It increases each year. Every year we use MORE oil: Instead of reducing the global consumption, it is increasing.
You may ask "If so much green energy is being built, how oil consumption is increasing?". Simply because energy consumption as a whole is increasing too. Transport and connectivity is increasing, energy demand is increasing, etc. Energy demand grows faster than green energy growth, so oil consumption (and gas and coal) are increasing too.

      @ssssaa2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It takes a while before exponential growth kicks in. Each year the portion of the total that renewables add on to what they already have is larger than the last (most years anyway). Emissions don't need to be reduced to zero either because the carbon cycle has been thrown out of wack and the earth now reabsorbs in addition to it's previous equilibrium more than 50% of all human emitted carbon dioxide each year, so if we cut emissions in half global CO2 levels would start falling.

Developing countries will start consuming more as they get richer but once they get to the level that developed western countries are at now their consumption will plateau and they will be able to implement the same green policies as richer countries without crippling their economy. You can't shift the blame to the poorer parts of the world when UK, US and other western countries already put out their share of CO2 in the 19th and 20th century when they were developing their industrial economies.

In 2009, South Korea made a green recovery plan, investing into renewable energy and tree-planting.
But, from 2009-2015, her emissions increased. This is because companies started to massively advertise and consumerism became a problem.
The manufacturing emissions of those useless products were what crushed Korea's renewables investments.
Why did those corporations advertise so massively? It's simple: capitalism.
If there was a system in place that set the value of the good to the opposite of its utility, clothes would be more expensive and renewables would become cheaper, tackling the main causes of climate change instead of neoliberalist thinking "the market will solve it".

I appreciate the sentiment of this video and I always like people doing climate videos, but I think I should add some things to the discussion. The latest IPCC AR6 WG1 report has given a best estimate of Equilibrium Climate Sensitivity at 3C of increased average global surface temperature since 1850, meaning even if we reach net zero carbon emissions we will still likely face 3C of average global surface temperature increase (2C-5C very likely range of equilibrium climate sensitivity). This doesn't mean we should do nothing and race towards extinction obviously, but it does mean that things are already worse than the 1.1C average global surface temperature increase that we are experiencing today.
Also, the world spending $500 billion to work towards fighting global warming in 2020 sounds like a lot of money... until you remember that the US pumped $1.5 trillion into the stock market last year on the whim that it might help the extremely wealthy who own most the stock market (surprise surprise it did nothing), trillion dollar wars, and generally look at that $500 billion dollars by the whole world compared to individual government spending. Sure, if governments can grow the balls to intervene against the fossil fuel industry, automobiles in general (I'm an American), and agriculture (meat like you said) we could still have capitalism and avoid the long term consequences of pumping massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere... Either way as an American, I don't see the radical infrastructure changes that would be required for a net zero carbon emissions, or even a remotely efficient society happening without some kind of major engagement of the general population in politics. I'm not sure how we are going to play our part in helping with climate change when our entire way of life revolves around the individual's car. I think this would be more feasible in other parts of the world that are not built for only cars and that did not fool around with the suburban experiment though.
I think this is a good video but like you mention in the end, we shouldn't feel any sense of complacency just because there are steps being taken by the world. Unless a miraculous invention comes out that can remove CO2 from the atmosphere and logistically make sense, the world has to reach net zero carbon emissions (or as close as possible) sooner rather than later.

The information you are citing here leads me to believe you are either very disingenuous, or insanely naive. Just in the period from 1970 - 2023, global CO2 emissions have gone from 15 gigatons, to more than 37 gigatons. The rate isn't slowing. It's accelerating. None of the changes you are pointing to have done anything to even slightly slow those emissions. And here's the really fun part... Even if we were slowing emissions by a considerable amount, that still wouldn't be anywhere near enough to avoid the kind of catastrophe you're sick of hearing about. Reality simply IS. It doesn't care about disposition, or optimism versus pessimism. My friend gave me some “vegetarian goose” which was very well made spiced tofu. Almost all their snacks are pretend meats, not for vegetarians, but for average consumers. True Chinese dishes tend to be vegetarian (although not vegan) but those are not popular with Americans.
China can still do a lot more in terms of climate, like cutting down further on coal, but they’re doing a fair bit considering they’re a growing economy only just getting out of poverty. Many people just got power, you can’t simply demolish the coal plant. In any case, we aren’t one to point fingers. The average Chinese consumer uses so much less than an American.

Do the right amount of focus on the bad things and fix those in a reasonable priority, but for those things that are more difficult, keep fighting, but don’t give up if things are going badly. Btw, in case you're wondering why Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia are so polluted, it's not just because of the CO2 levels. The dryness of the air is actually one of the main reasons, as countries with similar CO2 emissions don't suffer as much. That being said, both countries highly rely on fossil fuels during Winter. Uaanbaatar in particular is located in a valley, trapping the pollution, which makes it even worse.

I disagree with the part where is stated that individuals have power as consumers against big corporations to "just not buy from them". That just sounds naive given how much control of brands and sub-brands the big multi-nationals have where there is no real competition left. Also, I'm not an expert, but concrete production seems to play a big role in carbon emission, specially in emerging countries, I'd like have seen that addressed in the video. First : you are doing a huge mistake by talking only about electricity when speaking about energy. Electricity accounts for less than a quarter of the final energy consumed on earth. We don't need only to replace fossil fuels that produce electricity, we need to replace the other 75% of them. And then we would need to replace all the machines that work with fossil fuel to make them electric (construction machines, trucks, boats ...)
Second : no, the installation of new renewable energy generating devices will not grow exponentially because of one easy reason : we will lack basic metals to produce them (I'm talking about copper, not even rare earth elements). To answer the demand of the next 20 years mankind needs to extract more copper in that period of time than we did since the bronze age, all of that with a concentration of metal in the mines that decreases everytime we extract some.
This leads to the third point : we will never fight climate change in an economical and social system that requires infinite economic growth. It won't happen in a system where the production is dictated by the finance and by shareholders.
And last point : fighting climate change will not happen through technological changes, but through social and conceptual changes. We need to think of ways to organise society without requiring infinite economic growth, and how to fulfill everybody's basic needs with way less energy and ressources than we do today.

    • @KarlSnarks
      @KarlSnarks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

exactly, and it's almost impossible to decouple economic growth from recourse extraction (unless we find some incredible scifi technology that makes it possible to grow all tech from fungi and bacteria) because even a service economy needs resources, and virtual products uses electricity and storage space on HDD/SSD.
I don't believe we can fully transition out of capitalism (or even neoliberalism) in time to solve global warming (we have a two decades or so), but punishing polluting industries, implementing some social policies etc. would already go a long way and might buy us some time.

My point was just to say that it will be extremely complicated to electrify every machine that now relies on fuel, and electrifying everything isn't a magical solution.
In many cases instead of asking ourselves "how do I electrify this vehicle?", the question we will need to ask is "how can I find a solution to bypass that transport?". And the answer is almost always produce locally, adapt the design of cities, agriculture and industry to require less transportations ...

There's a reason why electric passenger planes are currently on the drawing board and designers are talkin unironically about battery-powered ocean transport though I suspect that wind and solar is going to play a much bigger Factor in that Arena. As for the localized production, I honestly doubt this is going to happen simply because there is a reason why we spend so much on fuel to begin with and because the transportation cost per mile is about to drop dramatically. The difference between a battery electric truck and a diesel powered truck driving from New York to Los Angeles is about $356 in favor of the electric truck before the maintenance advantages are factored period with autonomous driving technology the cost is going to get even cheaper and there's some very interesting projects in the pipeline using unmanned hydrogen dirigibles which in theory could drop the cost of Overland transportation to a level similar to that of sea transportation. There are multiple Technologies converging at the moment which are going to cause a massive disruption and change to the way humans live not seen since the Agricultural Revolution which should CS well into the next phase of development

Britmonkey, I object your statement highly! No, we cant guard companies for not being the reason! Don't defend their position. They are every inch aware of what they are doing but makes all the effort to stay put, because change can be cumbersome. Think about how many who lives and must live unconscious about changing any part of how they live, because of socioeconomic dilemmas. How the fu** are you to change the amount of growing poverty and its socioeconomic setback. They cant be bothered with "caring for the environment". The invidiual is not the solution. Never will be in a collective society. The companies bad doing wont be compromised unless they are regulated ( which you said I know), but also restricted, put down from their econmical aswell as political power, since it rules how bad they will infringe on nature, and the environment. Power must be exchanged and be brought back to the people( Im alluding to mostly monetary share)! Partly I agree with you, but dont tell me or anyone solely that the individual is the only one responsible.
