I remember that I had to drive about 1800 kms in about 2 days before to make that gig. I was in a small town above Stockholm, Sweden. Earth wind and Fire had a huge hit LP on every radio station and my girl friend's son kept singing ALL of the lyrics on the record over and over and over again................ An amazing experience.
All three of you looked like you were having a fun time. What was the occasion and how did the three of you approach this? Did you just go out cold and total improve with no discussion or did you say something like why don't each one of us solo and then towards the end of each solo start playing a groove to set up the next soloist? BTW you and Simon are welcome to come over my house and jam anytime. I've got exactly three drum kits set up all the time (13 sets altogether and most of the other drums are in my garage which is right next to the area with the three sets. Pictures of Art, Buddy Rich and yourself are lining the walls so I would make sure I had a picture of Simon up there before he arrived so he wouldn't feel left out lol.
HOLY FU*KING SH#T !!!!!!! You have got to be kidding me ! This is the kind of thing you hear about but just think its bullshit and never really happened....... LEGENDARY!!!!!.... Crownpropeller I thank you a million times over for THIS !!
Blakely is 63!!! He still played those crossover toms he did so many years ago in Night In Tunisia and Caravan. This is truly a great moment in drumming at that time three generations !!!Wow
I like Billy and Simon Playing Paiste...Novo China sounds boss for BC..Art was born with sticks in his hands..So effortless, always swinging..RIP Art..A true drumming legend..
Art Blakey towered those drums, man. Billy's singles should probably be illegal, and Simon played things that still sound super fresh today. All equally incredible.
Love this video. I wrote a book about Bill's six day run at Ronnie Scott's and six decades of music making three years ago called, "Six Days at Ronnie Scott's: Billy Cobham on Jazz Fusion and the Act of Creation," if his life story is of interest.
I'll be watching this a few times, oh my God this was the best three of my favorite players in the world playing together, thank you Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, Art Blakey,, such a treat, phenomenal.
I've been watching Simon Phillips since 1978 and this is the first video I've ever seen of him playing a drum kit other than Tama. AND Billy Cobham is using Tama's Artstar Cordia which was their newest and top of the line at the time WITH Paiste cymbals!!! Everyone thinks that the Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship Concert started the three drummer solo thing with Colaiuta/Gadd/Weckl. ALSO Art Blakey with the 3 mounted/2 floor tom configuration which is the configuration that a lot of players went to in the late 1980's thru 1990's. Art is such a stoical figure. I've never seen Cobham and Phillips on the same stage together!!! This is a rare bird!!!
Three Epic drummers whose resumes are second to none...:)..Simon is finding new life with Hiromi's Trio...He finally found a musician that can keep up with him....:)...Amazing to see him and Billy on the same stage....Art; what can you say about a legend...He's been everywhere and played with everybody and He'll be glad to tell you about it... What lives these men have lived!
who would have thought this kid would outplay Blakey and Cobham ... We also know how great Blakey and Cobham were to give him his dues. Wonderful people and musicians.
Three of my favourite drummers, Billy you are inspirational, not just for your brilliance, innovation and multifacetedness as a drummer...But for the sheer enjoyment you derive from your art and your great generosity of spirit toward other artists. And what can one say about 'Thunder', Art Blakey? Other than he was one of the true greats of drumming. Interestingly another like Krupa inspired by Chick Webb's aggressive swing style. Like you Billy another true pioneer he was to Be-bop and its development as you are to fusion, great to see you sharing the same stage! And Simon Phillips what a thoroughly durable and talented drummer with great touch and no little subtlety. It is hard to believe that he was a rock/metal drummer for a large part of his career given the the feel he has for Jazz/fusion etc. Thanks for this!
Interesting gig.As a Cobham fan from way back,I always felt like this.Early in his career Simon Phillips basically sounded like a mini me Billy Cobham lol.No disrespect intended. I saw Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers around this time.Art has a strong West African feel in his playing. His Tom Tom's are reminiscent of African dununs.
Billy played quite much in the Blakey and elvin jones style with Horace Silver too . With the hints of the style we know from Miles/ Mahavishnu onwards
He was involved among other things in Mike Oldfield's records as drummer and co-producer during that time. His playing in the song Crisis is delightful.
This is the only time I have seen Simon play on a different kit other than a Tama... and a small one at that (compared to what he usually plays) amazing as he usually is.
Nice to see Art Blakey go toe to toe with these younger cats, and giving as good as he gets. They could have him miked up better though. It's always great to see Billy Cobham on a smaller Kit, he has still got his jazz chops then.
every drummer play the maldicho hell out of these drums. Simon Phillips was a revelation. Art Blakey sets the tone for both of the others. Billy Cobham in particular plays one of his most musical solos. Phillips outdoes everyone, but the presence of Blakey seems to set the tone for the others.
He was already well established by this time, and he was working extensively with Mike Oldfield. He'd already worked with Jeff Beck, Judas Priest, and 10CC. (One side of the 10CC album was Steve Gadd, the other was Simon.) I caught SImon in Wurzburg Germany supporting Mike Oldfield, and he blew my mind. I was only fourteen at the time, and a trumpet player, but my best friend was an insanely gifted drummer who just sat in absolute amazement. A year or two later he met Simon at the Frankfurt Musikmesse and had a chance to talk with him about the Oldfield show. Simon, I believe, started playing professionally at 12 years old. By the time this was shot, he'd already been a pro for quite a while.
Doesnt matter who's 'best', as ol Art has it all. Speed, chops and youth are surpassed by his mellow musicality. That stuff he does at 8:20 breaks up all that previous (clutter).
As a HUGE Cobham fan I must say that SP is my other fav drummer 👉🏼 listen to Rock Pebbles and Sand with Stanley Clarke…that album is one of the best Rock Fusion albums 💥💥💥 AND respect for mr ART BLAKEY
Simon Phillips sounds great on these Gretsch drums. His kits always sound phenomenal but this kit makes him play a little differently. I heard a couple of Gadd licks in there which I have never heard him do before.
I took my drummer to see Art Blakey play at Ronnie Scott's for some inspiration. Instead of motivating him to greater creative heights he gave up playing & sold his kit a few days later. I said to him, "Imagine if everyone reacted like that, there'd be no drummers left you selfish ****!" He then punched me hard in the face, & I learned valuable life lesson.
Such a random combination. Blakey's a legend obviously, as is Billy. I always knew of SiPhi, but didn't really have much of a sense of scale of the guy, at least until I saw this... www.simon-phillips.com/discography.php
gas. wouldn't have expected to see these three drummers together. vague impression: blakey's playing is more fluid, graceful and dance-like ('musical' in the sense in that there is no point in music being otherwise); Philips and Cobham's playing here is more focused on rock dynamics (like studio musicians); but all good (of course). kudos to Philips to be up there playing with these guys. I admire the way he can seemingly be equally at home in any jazz or rock setting.
Art Blakey was still kicking some ass. He's old school where he still has old heads with the center has worn away. I had a drum instructor that did the same thing. I never understood that since the sound isn't the same when the coated finish wears off. Was it done out of laziness or they just didn't think to change the heads every so often?
I remember that I had to drive about 1800 kms in about 2 days before to make that gig. I was in a small town above Stockholm, Sweden. Earth wind and Fire had a huge hit LP on every radio station and my girl friend's son kept singing ALL of the lyrics on the record over and over and over again................ An amazing experience.
+Bill Cobham love ya Bill!
great performance Mr. Cobham... legendary....
Thank you for all this amazing music!
My HERO !!!... I Salute You Sir... GOD Bless You BIlly..

Art Blakey
A man who ALWAYS looked happy playing the drums.
Simon was 25, Billy 38 and Art 63. So beautiful to see the evolution.
25 + 38 = 63... Coincidence, I think not ! :D
thats I wanna say..
1982 blakey 63years old
2021 blakey 102years old / grandpa
2021 cobham 77years old / father
2021 philips 64years old / brother
HOLY FU*KING SH#T !!!!!!! You have got to be kidding me ! This is the kind of thing you hear about but just think its bullshit and never really happened....... LEGENDARY!!!!!.... Crownpropeller I thank you a million times over for THIS !!
+anofi berry
You're welcome!
Art looks like a proud father here watching his influence pass down the line.
He didn't look as happy when G.Baker and him had that so call drum battle.
couldn't have said it any better
asqrss3233 "so called" that's funny.
Art's smile takes the cake here.
3 of the GREATEST drummers of all time!!! Huge 👍👍👍
Blakely is 63!!! He still played those crossover toms he did so many years ago in Night In Tunisia and Caravan. This is truly a great moment in drumming at that time three generations !!!Wow
Billy cobham has became one ofmy favorite drummers that ive been studying in these last 3 months. All of these guys are incredible.
Very cool! Who would ever have thought Art Blakey would have had a bigger drum set than Simon Phillips or Billy Cobham?!?!
Beautiful vintage Pearl Kit Art is playing.
SAme as the video at Ronnie Scotts from late 80s, it seems.
One of the best videos I have ever seen
The solo part of Billy around 10:36, and for a little bit, reminds me so much of Ian Paice's "The Mule"
I like Billy and Simon Playing Paiste...Novo China sounds boss for BC..Art was born with sticks in his hands..So effortless, always swinging..RIP Art..A true drumming legend..
I love watching Art Blakey play drums.
He's always smiling while playing
@@cascara2801 Abdullah İbn buhaina...his secret name
For Simon, seeing THE GREAT Art Blakey smiling at you while you’re groovin with him, Must’ve been some kind of profound bucket list thing! Wow
Art Blakey towered those drums, man. Billy's singles should probably be illegal, and Simon played things that still sound super fresh today. All equally incredible.
Hi everyone - IMO there are no winners or losers here and nobody "smoked" anybody. I hear 3 greats making music together. I've learned from each.
Well said.

So great!.. all 3 inspiring each other to elevate.
PEACE
Blakey. 'Nuff said. Amazing.
Look how well worn , Art's heads are.
He doesn't replace them for every gig, like some.
Old school.
Simon and Billys drums always sound so good no matter what brand they use
OMG Love Art Blakey!!!:)(Cobham and Phillips too:)

One word.... LEGENDS!!!!!!!!!!!1
GREAT SEEING DIFFERENT RACES BROUGHT TOGETHER ENJOYING, RESPECTING EACH OTHER. 💜
36 years on and drums rarely sound better than this. Simon's Gretch kit sounds fantastic!
who would have thought this kid would outplay Blakey and Cobham ... We also know how great Blakey and Cobham were to give him his dues. Wonderful people and musicians.
Thanks for collection!
A rare video of Simon Phillips playing cross hand in some parts
This was beautiful.
BILLY COBHAM, if you read this, I've been a fan for 30 years, THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR GIFT OF MUSIC!
Art ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Forever

billy, art and simon really tear up this session.

Nearly 40 years ago. Wow.
Rumor has it Art Blakey put brand new heads on his kit before this performance.
This was actually in 1983, Drummershow at Montreux, together with Billy Cobham, Art Blakey and others.
Figured, the kit Cobham is playing is a Tama Artstar Cordia, which didn't come out until '83.
still love it!!
Art can hold his own!
those paiste sure sound fantastic too!
Awww hell ya....!!
I have seen Art and Billy play live, never saw Simon.
amazing - just great & WOW
Liked the video before I️ even watched it
SO. MUCH. TALENT.
Billy cobham is one of my favoret drummers of all time
Pure Joy!!!!
Funny to see Simon and Billy playing Paiste...
Disco69 And Simon with a gretsch kit 😉
Simon Phillips owning his place on the stage with the other super talents, love it!
Even at such a young age Simon really rips this one!!!!!
He was involved among other things in Mike Oldfield's records as drummer and co-producer during that time. His playing in the song Crisis is delightful.
Master's at work totally Amazing 🙌🙌
This is the only time I have seen Simon play on a different kit other than a Tama... and a small one at that (compared to what he usually plays) amazing as he usually is.
A time bomb trio! Awesome
Прекрасно!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John-Andrew I have a similar story. I learned cornet, then played Flugel Horn... saw Simon with Toyah in 1982 when I was 12... and now play drums!! :)
Doesnt matter who's 'best', as ol Art has it all. Speed, chops and youth are surpassed by his mellow musicality. That stuff he does at 8:20 breaks up all that previous (clutter).

Gosh Simon and Billy playing Paiste!!!! 😯😯😯😯
BRAVOOO!!!!
12:28 = incredible transition!
Simon Phillips sounds great on these Gretsch drums. His kits always sound phenomenal but this kit makes him play a little differently. I heard a couple of Gadd licks in there which I have never heard him do before.
ずうっと聴いていられる。😃サンキュー😉👍🎶ナイス👊😃💕
Simon get's the gold medal here.
My favorite BILLY COBHAM album is POWER PLAY!
This was way before the Vinnie, Weckel and Gadd video!
Não tem comentário . são uns monstros de bateras

Damn.
I still want to Tony Williams in a drum battle with Simon and Billy if anyone has that footage
Simon playing Gretsch and Paiste. Wow!
the emperor, the king and the impatient ...small prince!!!
Respect ONLY for the legends.....offcourse both r playing great, but legend will always be a legend....hats off for Sir Blakey..
Bu was old enough to be Billy and Sonny's father.
Le grand simon 👍👍🤘🤘👏👏

Wow!

Art what a groove.. Amazing single strike roll!! n. 1

Drummers having fun.
It's funny that people think 63 is old. Check out Roy Haynes, he's in his 90's and sounds like he's 35!
Simon Phillips hair has not aged a bit...a force of nature indeed.😆
people always have to make things a fucking competition
Fucking awesome!! '!!!!!
This is some of the worst camera/Director's-work that I've ever seen in a live-performance-video.
There is a reason are reguarded as great at what they are at..they simply are for a fact
