Got to say, it's amazing what they did with Touga's character. Turning him from a misogynistic playboy in the show, to a character I sob over when the drowning scene comes on, is such a power move.
to note Touga's (and by extension Nanami's) backstory is 100% meant to be canon to the show regardless of what you think the movie is supposed to be. It's something they had thought up for the show but couldn't get away with because well.. yeah. So they used it for the movie where they had essentially no restrictions
THAT's the reason Touga sees Sex as a messed up power thing and Akio is so easily able to draw him in.
It makes sense how Touga both partakes in it with Akio at the same time he has problems with same gender sex like he said to Nanami when she said she "prefers girls"
Thanks for reacting to this. Both Utena TV and Utena the movie have been my favorite since I started watching anime in the late 90s. Even though I watch at least 10 shows each season each year for the past 2 plus decades Utena continues to be my favorite. It's that timeless and beautiful and the rewatch value is incredible as each viewing can bring a new interpretation.

Ahhh, at long last. Such a visual tour de force; one of the best-looking animated films ever for sure. Totally essential to understanding the show I think, even though it's its own thing in so many ways. Lots of ways to read it, and I'll refresh myself on it by watching the reaction, but I remember strongly suspecting that it is in fact a sequel to the show; whatever kind of reality the academy existed within, the one Utena escaped to was similarly artificial and contrived, if anything even moreso and in a more dramatic and heightened sense, and she was born into a new identity carrying forward her experiences in Akio's dreamland, putting her that much closer to the true surface of reality itself.
YEAH BABY! THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR, THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

the movie that is somehow an AU, a retelling and probably also a sequel all at once. Which is it? CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE! cause even the production team seem to all have different opinions on that and Ikuhara himself will never give you his answer.
It's basically Final Fantasy VII Remake. Right down to the fact that the entire last act is a big vehicle chase.

I could post long romantic ramblings about it, but, really, it all boils down to
- its beautifully animated and scored
- makes no sense logically but all the sense emotionally and thematically
- S-Grade lesbian film. Best sapphic movie of all time.

I love how everything is both, more obtuse, yet, more direct.
In the series the school was drawn with blurry watercolors and fading detail to exemplify how confusing and hard to navigate around the place was, in the movie the place is literally hard to navigate around.
Akio was a pathetic piece of shit that just acted like a cool dude and was cool just to a bunch of unexperienced teens, in the movie he's just a pathetic piece of shit try hard that has actually been dead for long.
You can apply this to everything, even to the ending where Jury and Miki flat out state they will leave when it's their time, which was just implied at the end of the show.
Is like all the metaphores are lifted and we're just saying stuff directly, but at the same time the visual analogies just became literal.
Kinda like transitioning from the show's blurry and faded watercolors of nature, to a striking surreal impressionistic oil painting, like in the movie opening.

Okay I was not expecting this today. In the time it took you to get to this movie I watched the series in its entirety on my own. I’ll check this out now and at a later point I’ll check out your reactions to the series.
Things I learned about this movie as well with friends: Like Wizard of Oz, it *also* has some sync-ups if you play Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" over it.
Idk if you play any visual novels, but Rewrite is my favorite, and you might enjoy it. It's made by Key Studios, the same people who made other great visual novels such as Clannad, Little Busters, Angel Beats, Charlotte, etc. They never fail to deliver.
No spoilers, but all I'm gonna say is Akane is best girl.

I mean... so many Ikuhara anime reuse the same symbolism/elements it's really easy to think of them as spinoffs. Like just swap out coffins for boxes and you have at least three consistent elements between Utena, Penguindrum, and Lesbian Bear Storm.

It's a good thing.
I actually found the series forgettable and overly long, but this movie still addressed all the themes in exactly a way that makes them all work in a condensed fashion.
