Martin: Great Video. I like the description and mild hint on your shop and dog. I guess the main theme of this video is advertisement for Gross Point city main street. Good Luck Subra Ganesan
Hi Martin: It was called the Cabbage Patch because it was settled by Belgians, who ate a lot of cabbage, or at least are associated with cabbage. Most of the houses in this area were built by the Belgians, and Mulier's is an example of one of those old families. There are still plenty of old Belgian family names here. Have fun walking your neighborhood and I'll see you around.
I grew up in the Park and still live here. I've heard that the 'Cabbage Patch' actually used to be farmland - a friend's mother told me her family owned a large tract of land in that area where they farmed rutabagas back in the 1800s... As for walking down Kercheval, I'd certainly be a bit more cautious as you approach Alter Rd...
Well Martin, I could have been wrong. According to the GPNews, this is the explanation for the name... "In 1903 Hugo Scherer and Fred Wadsworth built a dozen farm houses on what is now Berkshire Place. They were rented to a succession of Detroiters who later built at the Pointe. Mrs Henry Joy called it the "Cabbage Patch" after the then famous book of Mrs. Wiggs, and the name stuck until most of the house were torn down." I don't know that book, but maybe can find some info about it.
Would be a good idea to mention what street this concentrates on. He mentions its not Kercheval which is where the "corporate" strip is, despite what Google Maps says about "Atom's Java & Juice." So where the heck is it?
It's actually because of the Belgian Immigrants. That's why it's also called Grosse Pointe, because the French speaking people were making fun of the Belgians for being larger people. (The Belgians also spoke french.)
Yeah, over all I would say GPP is an okay city. Ive been to pretty much all of those places that he metioned. But the only problem is that it feels as if its detacted from the real world. Most of the time its to much of a dick and jane, happy go lucky, cheery cheery, neighborhood. But other than that and that most of the people here are spoiled, its an awesome pace to raise your kids.

Grosse Pointe is one of my favorite suburbs, no cookie cutter houses or big box stores, or strip malls.

It is also Kercheval, just further west - the other shopping section. He says "farther down Kercheval" is the Starbucks...

Belgiums!! Ahhh! I dont know about that, but then again our ceilings are high and doors bigger. And that totally explains the local donut shop.
